Hi,

I have never privately hired a car from a hire company before - only ever hired them via my work and basically that meant picking up the keys and handing them back - but I am thinking of hiring a Corsa sized car in the next week or so, for about a week, whilst I go around, um, car hunting.

Anyhow, I was looking on the National car site today and I wasn't sure if I had got this right or wrong but it looks like a Corsa is about £88 for the week? Surely not, isn't that more like per day or am I completely wrong on that?

Also, when I looked at the insurance it seems that they include third party insurance and any damage to the Corsa is a £1,000 maximum cost to the hirer? Again, have I got that wrong - is the insurance included in the price, is it only third part? Can you pay extra and get it fully comp?

As I say, I have never hired a car privately before so any tips, warnings, suggestions would be welcome - i.e. what to check on the car and what to sign on the paperwork when I pick it up, etc, would be welcome.

Thanks,

Hi
I know this sounds naff but I have never bought a car having always been ?lucky? enough to have a company car and a big millage user.

I am now retired having bought my company car when I retired which is now ten years old , I am 60 .

I would like to buy a new car and have seen the deals offered on the web in particular BMW 5 series (which I drive now) appearing to show a circa £14K saving.

I have rung the company and was very surprised by their openness I telling me that the cars were manufactured in 2005 and have never been registered so an 09 plate is what you get.

No BMW guarantee but they give a 1 year warrantee and you can purchase a further two years for a sum.

What?s the downside you seem to get a great speck car for a big saving however even in retirement I will do about 20K miles a year so I need to know it will not let me down.

I am niggled by the stories of cars being left in fields for years and rusty brakes etc

Any comments would be appreciated.

Some retired friends of mine have an unusual hobby ? they build scale models of houses. These are so perfect that it would be an insult to call them dolls? houses. Anyway onto the motoring link. They would sometimes like to put a model car in the garage/on the drive. The standard scale for this hobby is 1/12 (1? to 1? in old money). Whilst there is a large choice in the various model railway scales and the popular 1/43 and 1/18 scales they have been able to find very little in 1/12 ? in fact only a Model T! There are plenty of motorcycles and scooters in 1/12 but where do you get cars? I looked in a model shop I know for them but they had nothing and no ideas. Many thanks. Read more

VR6

I am looking for a new car to replace my ageing Golf VR6. I want somthing fun, with a boot, and well built.

So I thought about a Mini Cooper S. I?ve seen one for sale 2005 (05) with 75k on the clock for £7299 + £91 admin at CarGiant. Does the price sound about right, and what do people think of the car?

My main concern is the depreciation of it over the next few years, and that I may look like a hairdresser in it. I?ll only be doing about 6000 miles a year and would look to keep it for 2 or 3 years.

Any views appreciated.

I nearly bought a 147 GTA beofre I bought my 4Motion last year, only the deal on my part ex swayed me. Its back on my shopping list again now though, as I have a company car for weekday motoring....... :-)

250bhp, and they look incredible, especially in the pearlesent white. The sound they produce is out of this world, and there are plenty of 53/04 cars available for under £8k. Definieltey worth investigating if you will miss the V6 in your Golf. Future Classic too, so might not depreciate too much more.

I think my throttle is sticking on at low speeds. Isay "think" because if I dip the clutch the revs die as normal it only seems to happen accelerating through the gears. it doesn't do it all the time and is not much of a problem....yet. anyone else having same prob.? my car is an 05 tdci 130 ghia x. It's the clutch that makes it easy to stall. With it being a diesel it has a heavy duty clutch that would be heavy to press. The Mondeo has a clutch pedal assist spring that actually helps to press the pedal down to a degree, this spring battling against the clutch spring is a fine balance and it makes the pedal feel like you have reached the point of contact on the clutch when in fact you haven't and hence you stall it as the car lurches forward when you let the clutch up a bit more. This is not helped by the Aircon sapping the power at low revs as well. You'll find that pressing the Eco button (turning the AC off) and setting off in 1st from a standstill is quite easy, with AC on and setting off in 2nd takes some getting used to. In traffic it's best not to touch the revs and just let the clutch up very slowly and let the anti-stall help propel you along.

I am in the market for a new car and fully expecting to get a good deal in the current climate, however I am finding that its difficult to get anyone to show much interest.

First tried the Audi dealership that I bought my last new car from 2 years ago - same sales guy remembered me and emailed back asking what I was interested in etc....then no quote. Gently pushed him again after a week, and again was told he would get back to me and nothing, so in my book lost sale - no third chances!

Citroen C5 is also in the running. First dealership was to busy to even acknowledge me so I left. Requested brochure from website to which I get a letter to tell me they are out of brochures for C5 so they suggest I read the website or try the dealer who was to busy to speak with me..... Have now managed to get a test drive set up with another dealer, but they cant tell me what model it will be as they were not sure what their new demonstrator was going to be......

I recall last time I did this it was much easier and more plesant!

Rant over.

Thanks for the advice I did ask if I was getting close to a deal would they let me have the car for 24 hours test drive and they said it would be okay

DP

.The offer was to pay the price of the B150 and get the diesel B180 with auto box . The demonstrator( a B180 sport auto) which i tried out had just just been put on the road that day so hopefully it would loosen up with miles but I am sure you are right the B150 would be pretty gutless.
Thanks for the advice

Hiya

Seen autodata and such referencing a number like J4S and such. On mine i've got two plates under the bonnet - neither have a number similar (have chassis code etc). There is some rusty numbers on the engine block but no idea what they are.

Anybody know where the number should be?

Cheers,

Afternoon all.
Could anyone please advise if they know of a car, where the spindle shaft with its knurled boss, onto which the windscreen wiper arm clips, is available as a spare part? This can be for front or rear.

Thank you. Read more
