I have just bought a 106 1.4 diesel with 100k done. I've just done a load of work for the mot and so I want to keep it if possible. However, because of safety issue, I never drove it fast until now.
The thing is that it can only do 75mph maybe 77mph and I think it should do 90mph.
The oil and water seem clean. I've drained the fuel filter and tried again with the air box off. It starts up very well and the engine is very quiet (compared to a 306 1.9d with 165k anyway)
I've got a new fuel filter and air filter in the post. The brakes are not dragging, I've checked each wheel.
Do you have any ideas where I should look next? Read more

Did the cambelt. Does 85mph now. Timing must have been wrong.

I read an email doing the rounds in work about using a mobile phone to unlock your car if you happen to lock the keys in it.

Apparantly you phone your spouse at home using your mobile phone. You ask them to phone you back also using a mobile phone. Using the spare remote key fob, your spouse presses the unlock button on the keyfob and the signal from the key is somehow transmitted via the phone network. The email goes on to say as long as you hold your mobile about a foot away from the drivers door, the car will unlock itself and it will do this even if you're hundreds of miles away from each other.

hmmm...
could this work?

Does anyone want to try it? Read more

And the sad thing is I used to understand what all that meant :) I did all this stuff mainly in the first year and a bit in the final year, but it would be 2004isht he last time I had anything with it. I am sure some professor thought how can we fill the course? I know make them study analogue TV broadcasting! What a complete waste of time. TDMA etc is useful for networking though I guess.

Hello all

I'm toying with the idea of swapping my 2001 S60 for a Saab 9-3 convertible, something with reasonable mileage around 99-00 age.

One of the concerns I have is how bad is the bulkhead fracturing issue that people talk about and how easy is it to spot a problem if I go to view one?

Take a look here at tinyurl.com/2bkd3b where the issue is discussed(there are probably other threads as well) - Saabscene is the first stop for all things Saab!

Not saying TomTom traffic is brilliant but you can look at delays on their website too.

Hi all
I have a flat spot/hesitation at 2200rpm. I noticed it in most gears, mostly if I cruised at 2200, and also if I accelerated through it in 2nd gear.

It's had new spark plugs. I changed the HT leads this morning and it is better but not perfect. I don't notice it on cruising anymore, only when accelerating through the range in 2nd gear. Sometimes it feels like an automatic, when you put your foot down in, say, 3rd and it accelerates for a second then decides to change down and there's a surge of power when it locks up. Anyone had this before?

Well thanks for the update whatever it means :-O TTFN.

My owner's manual say to do that, I suppose that Ford considered that in an area where summer days might climb to over 40 C would be the best choice, but I've read many times that these engines do not tolerate an engine oil different to 5W-30, which is the norm in Europe by the way... Would such viscosity affect my engine, or the hot weather really requires this thickness? Read more

Ford will have carried out extensive testing. I personally would stick to their recommendations.

Hi

I live in France and need to buy a new car (hence Left Hand Drive). Someone at ( 8< SNIP ) suggested your site, I hope you can help me.

Apparently it can now be cheaper for someone in France to come to the UK, buy a LHD car, take it back to France and reregister it. Pricing I can check myself, but the question is - are there any differences at all between a UK LHD car and a regular French car with the same specification, and are there any other pitfalls, problems, etc to look out for.

Thanks for your help
Cheers

If it's anything like Spain it's usually just a paperwork chase - some people have gone to specialist companies here who will do it for a price, but others have done it on a do-it-yourself basis successfully

Hi all,

A few weeks ago my water pump went after a very icy night *cough water was blue but not enough anti freeze i guess* & was ok if i kept topping it up as only was leaking. Then after a short trip out a week later it gave up and totaly died the temp needle did not reach the red.
I just got my car back with a new cam belt & water pump, but when i start the car up he sounds like a tank & water drips out from a hole in the back pipe & sprays out when reved, this does not go away i have done 30 miles and water is still flooding out when i pull over & check.
The car also seems to not tick over right and feels jurky, but drives fine so long as i have my foot on the gas.
I took it back to the garage and was told it just needs a service? it was fine before it went in?
I have checked for blown gasket, No water is being used and there is no water in the oil, creamy gunk ect.
Im very stumped any idea's so i can take it back to the garage and say hey look!!

Thank you.. Read more

The K series does produce a lot of 'steam', especially in cold and damp weather. I wouldnt worry too much if you are not loosing coolant - the exhaust can hold a lot of moisture! If you do loose water, I would look at the inlet manifold gasket before the headgasket aswell. The IMG is considerably cheaper to replace :-)

Not sure on the lumpy running but I suspect a bad job has been done - the timing is automatic however it cannot adjust an incorrectly fitted belt. I would take it back or get another opinion before any damage is done!!

Quick question for the backroom boys in blue

Daughter was rear ended at Handy Cross (M40 j4) on Monday by a 4x4 which then drove off.
She got his number and called the police - not showing on insurance DB. They asked her to go to High Wycombe police station to make a statement, which she did. They are following up trying to find the offending vehicle.

However, they gave her a producer to go back to HW police station with MOT insurance etc. We can find the reg and insurance documents but not the MOT which was due to expire on Friday. It was already booked in to get MOT done on Thursday, should be OK no lights damaged or whatever but am I right to assume -
1) She needs the current MOT not the new one we will get on Thursday
2) I need to get the garage to print me a copy before they do the MOT or they will not be able to print the 2008-09 certificate once the new one has been done.

Anyone know?
cheers Read more

Thanks for the response FC
For the record neither my daughter, my wife or I have any problem whatever in the requirement to produce the documents.
From what my daughter has said the police she has spoken to were supportive and helpful and are going to try to sort out what they can of the other driver, no complaints whatsoever.
The producer, as far as we are concerned is routine no more no less.

I will post again if we get anywhere
