I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but I need to tell you all of the facts. Had a leak in the radiator. Put in raidiator leak stop a few times. My wife didn't top it uo one day and drove for a while with the temp gauge in the red. After this, the heat would work for a while then stop and the engine would begin to heat up. Sometimes the heat would come back on and the engine would cool right down. Other times I would have to pull over, loosen the fill cap, water would hiss and bubble out and then I would top it up with fresh water.

As soon as I would start it again, the engine would be cooler, and the heat would be back on.

Anyway, Replaced the radiator with a used one, drained the system, put in a new thermostat housing and thermostat, & new water pump.

Still over heating and not overheating. Heat comes on and soon goes off.

Took out the thermostat all together, but still the same unpredictable scenario.

I could drive 15 miles with no problem. Another day I would only go 5 or 10 and it would overheat.

Someone said that the cylander head might have warped, letting air into the system. Could this be causing the Problem. I need this jeep and I don't know what to do. Going to a Land Rover Repair shop is out of the Question. To much $$$$.

Can anyone help?

Be aware that if you go down the line of taking the cylinder head off, check it for warping (due to excess heat), but remember Land Rover do not recommend the skimming of their cylinder heads. Any one who says to the contrary is wrong.

Hi all,

New Alto was launched 1st March. Test drove the mid-spec SZ2 today in solid red. £7295 on the road.

First impressions were excellent. I currently drive a 1.0 Charade 2004. The build quality was very good, everything felt very tightly screwed together. The engine is a 3 pot but much more refined than the engine in my Charade. Ride felt smooth and handling good. Of course it's not in the same league as the new Ka for handling, but it's cheaper and felt very competent. The 3 pot unit has a pleasant thrum to it which didn't feel too gruff. Switchgear nicely weighted, indicators make the classy sound that the mk 1 Focus used to (thankfully not the 'ping ping' of the Suzuki Splash).

Overall, I think it's a really decent car, offering a good level of kit, great economy, and low emissions. For someone who covers only 5-6000 miles per year and doesn't need lots of space, this sort of car makes sense (without needing to pay the premium for the IQ and having less room).

I was impressed with how quiet the engine was at idle, and the brakes were strong with a very nicely weighted pedal. They've saved money on the dash plastics, but at this end of the market you can live with this.

The i10 is of course its natural rival, and arguably offers more kit for the money. Having recently test driven the i10, I would say the i10 is more refined, but I thought the Alto handled the road better and rode more smoothly. There is something more characterful and fun about the Alto, too - probably its cheeky looks and zesty 3 cylinder unit. The Alto has an extremely wide range of colours to choose from, which is unusual on a small car.

I'd definitely buy the new Alto... but with money tight and a reliable Charade, it's going to have to wait!

I think HJ is testing the Alto soon, so it will be interesting to see his verdict. Read more

Oops! Thanks, HJ - I shall now don the tall conical hat and inspect the plasterwork in the corner...

It lists the members as . . .
Warwickshire Police
Warwickshire County Council
NHS
Highways Agency
CPS
Warwickshire Fire and rescue Services
AND
Warwickshire Magistrates' Courts Service.
That enough?

The legally qualified "uniformed" judiciary are far too protective of their independence to even think about getting involved in a camera scheme and if what you say is right I'm horrified that lay justices ever thought it appropriate to do so.

The current site for the WCRP lists its members as the police and the CountyCouncil. County Magistrates Court Services were subsumed into Her Majesty's Court Service from around 2005/6.

Hello, wondered if anyone had any ideas...?

My Skoda fabia has a number of issues, i'll list them below

1. Front Passenger Window switch does not operate window, but the switch for the passenger door on the drivers controls does open it. (maybe the passenger doors switch?) But strangely halfway through a journey it has on occasion opened itself!

2. The instrument pannel has a warning light that comes on to tell me that I have a bulb out (but I don't) this warning comes on randomly, sometimes it will sometimes it wont. (Sometimes happens when I brake, but other times just randomly) No Bulbs are out though.

3. Say if I drive up the road say 3 miles and turn the car off to go into the shop. When I come back it wont start properly eventually it will on very low revs until it slowly builds to normal idle revs. (I have had spark plugs changed and still no joy).

4. Rear windscreen washer doesnt work (I can hear the pump but no water). Having said that my rear passenger footwell is soaking, so maybe thats where the water is going.

I think that is all for the moment... Please Help!!!

A few years back I had an Octavia with the same rear screen problem. The plastic pipeline taking the fluid from the front to the back came out of a joint over the rear left wheelarch. This flooded the box section behind/below and soaked the electrical loom connection within causing electrical shorts and corroding the connecting tags. Your problem could be the same sort, if there is a loom connection block getting soaking wet it could possibly send all sorts of error messages around the car.

My ageing Golf Mk3 could probably do with some new sills. Its a five door and the both are corroding at the front edge where it meets the back edge of the wing. In particulr,on the drivers side, this was made worse many years ago when the sill was slightly squashed presumably by some dufus trying to jack it in the wrong place. This has hastened corrosion in this area.

Just wondering how much it might cost? Car is white so the rusty bits scream at you for attention ! Read more

Chuckie888

Probably only about £20 per sill but the cost of labour for replacing would not make it cost effective unless you could do it yourself. A patch would probably be your best bet if you want to keep the car for a couple of years, but the rust will be 10 times worse once you start poking around. I don't think people do the 'cover' type sills anymore as they were a bit of a bodge anyway.

1998 Mazda Xedos- 2 ltr V6 - 49,000 - genuine - I have had it 9.5 years - it had 2,058 mls on the clock when I bought it in Sept 1999.

2nd car so low mileage. FSH - Climate Control, leather seats, well nigh immaculate considering it is 10.5 yrs old - slight corrosion on 2 x wheels + 2 parking dings (if you look very closely!!). Read more

Is it ok for the cooling fan to cut in when slowing down (say at the round about), after a high speed drive in the motorway (in these cooler months)? After a few minutes of stopping it cuts out automatically. Read more

jc2

It is quite normal for the fan to cut in when slowing from high speed;the engine has been working hard and,as you slow down, the airflow thro' the radiator drops and the fan cuts in to keep the engine cool-it should not be running when driving fast-at least not in winter ambients. The fan will run all the time if A/C is on.

hi room, i had a bit of an arguement with a lorry some while back (14 months to be exact) my insurance didnt want to know so i got some help from the MIB, after months of writing to the company concerned ( german haulage company) and 10 months trying to get a written statement from an independant witness im getting a visit from their insurance people to assess the damage...is this an admission of guilt finally ? are there any questions i should be asking them when they visit...i got a qoute from vauxhall for repairs and they quoted me £3000 parts and labour, the car is probably worth £800 minus the dents just suppose they write it off and pay up who keeps the car, do i have to buy it back off of them ive never claimed before so its all a bit new to me...thanks Read more

SpamCan61 {P}

By the sound of it the OP is now dealing with the third party's insurance company direct, in which case they are presumably not legally entitled to write the car off, as per the relevant FAQ, unless the OP actually wants the car written off of course.
