I drove a MK6 1.4TSI (122) SE and a 2.0 TDI (140) DSG last week. Very impressed. For me its a step change on the MK 5.
Last drove a new MK5 Golf 18 months ago (GTI) and the door casing came away in my hand! Walked away and bought a Civic.

The MK6 is sufficiently better in my view that I would buy one tomorrow.
1.4TSI 122 is a turbo only not supercharged/turbo so simpler.
Thought it was a great unit better than VTEC honda's i'm used to.
DSG was superb.

On the 1.4TSI SE DSG I got my dealer to 'theoretically' match a 2k discount from drive-the-deal and found an 8.2% APR PCP deal through Car-Finance.net.
VW were offering a PCP at 13% APR initially (crazy!!!) then managed to get them down to 10.2% after 10 minutes haggling (still crazy with a 1% base rate!!). Advice: haggle like mad and keep it real against best internet offers + bring evidence.

Only thing stopping me now is the chance that No 10 will announce a 2k scrapping charge discount for >9 yr old cars (like the german scheme) and I don't want to miss out as I have an 11-yr old Audi I can sell.

Will hang on for 6 months......

Any other experiences out there on new Golfs???

I ordered my new MK6 Golf 2 weeks ago and maybe because I also specified a sunroof on my SE model, I have got to wait nearly 16 weeks for it! Oh, well 14 weeks to go, and counting.

hi all,

ive just had to replace a wheel bearing, rear driver, on my 2003 ford focus zetec. fair enough about 60 quid i could ill afford! was it related to the fact i had a leak coming into the boot, and one under the front driver seat, a little while ago? i read that water can destroy them? and will i now need another one? i hadnt heard any noises, that apparently i should have?

thanks for all advice
cheers xx Read more

Snakey

I replaced both front and rear bearing on my 02 Focus - just age related wear and tear nothing to do with a leaky boot.

Rear bearings seem to be a common failure on that age of Focus. Every car has its weakness!

I was just half listening to Richard Hammond on BBC2 and I thought I heard him come up with the title subject statement.

I find it hard to believe! Read more

I always thought Louis Renault invented the supercharger in 1902 and the turbocharger followed a
few years later by a Swiss engineer whose name escapes me.
Alfred Buchi was the Swiss engineer, patented the turbocharger in 1905.

Hi,
Recently purchased an Audi A4 avant automatic 2.0l. There seems to be a problem with the boot lock. It won't shut properly and I seem to have to drive round with it open and can't lock it at night.
Any common problems that I should know of and how would I go about rectifying the problem?
Cheers,

1997 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.3 (81,000 miles)

I drove from London to Devon a little while ago and when I came off the motorway in Exeter the engine started severely over-revving when I pressed the clutch whilst stopping (up near 5,000 rpm). Initially I thought it might just be the accelerator cable sticking but I had similar problems on the way back (cleared if I stopped for 10 minutes or so).

Since I got back I've cleaned the idle speed control valve but the problems still persisting, engine revs a bit more when I press the clutch moving up gears and revs even more when changing down gears or stopping. Also the revs can fluctuate whilst stationary, between 700-1200rpm.

Do you think replacing the ISVC will help? Should I replace the TPS as well or do you think this could just be adjusted? (if so, any advice on how would be much appreciated).

As much as possible I'd like to do the work myself rather than take it in somewhere so as much detail as possible would be great.

Cheers

Try this. Locate the engine management fuse in the fusebox by the left hand suspension turret, its a 3 amp fuse, and remove it. Have a cuppa and put it back in. Start the engine without touching the throttle and let it idle for 10 mins. Switch off, restart and immediately go for a 5-10 mile run. Should sort it.

Hi all, hope someone can help with this problem. My Merc has been dry stored for 5 years and I,ve now got it up for sale. The engine fires and starts but I have to keep revving it, Wont tick over. Once it stops, it won,t start again. I have cleaned out the petrol, cleaned plugs, took top chamber and piston off, all free and clean. I took off the rubber side pipe (leads to the air filter) and it was full of petrol, about half a litre. If I turn it over with the hose off, you can see petrol comming thro two bolt holes on the exposed side of the carb. Guessing the diaphragm has gone, but this is a complete guess. Any help appreciated. Read more

Tapping noise from under the bonnet?
This question is about a 1999 Ford Focus 1.8 petrol 79k miles.

This afternoon when I started the engine up, I noticed a tapping type noise coming from under the bonnet which increases as the engine speed (revs) increases. I went to a non-ford garage and he seems to think it is coming from the timing belt area and then I went to a ford dealer and he thinks that it may be coming from the timing belt cover area. I don't think the noise is from the tappets because the oil level is between min and max on level ground.

Given that I had the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley renewed at the same ford dealer I asked today in May 07 and had done about 15k miles since do you think this is the likely cause ?

Also I have posted other questions concerning an oil change I had done last November when they put 10w-40 oil in. Like I said I went back the following day and they supposedly put the correct 5w30 oil in. If they had been dishonest and not done what I requested could this have caused the noise I have now i.e. to do with the thicker 10w40 oil and the tappets issue ?

Thanks

Hi

I'd like to connect my Sony MP3 player into the HU-803 head unit in my 2001 Volvo S60 and have seen this iO CONNECT device (tinyurl.com/delspd)

Has anybody heard one of these working?

It's a Class D amplifier and I did think that due to the size of the amplifier there was some difficulty achieving good audio quality, but I'm sure somewhere who knows more than me can qualify that?

Thanks, Chris. Read more

Hi,

A friend has a Fiat Ulysse on a 51 plate. It is the 1.9 TD model. The problem is over 2000 revs, it becomes very smoky. Under 2000 revs, all is fine. Also it has no power. We think it is the turbo unit.

Any advise would be great.

Thanks for looking.

adverse camber

check all the hoses in the intake first - easier and cheaper than a turbo.

What colour smoke? ie oil or unburned fuel?
