A friend of mine needs to retire her 316 compact 1995 which she has had from new. She want to buy a 325 or 330 convertible - preferably one year old from a BMW approved used. She wants to pay cash down. How much discount can she get? Her local N London dealer is not exactly bending back to make a sale?I suggested she looks a little outside London. Prices range from 25000-30000

Estimates and techniques would be appreciated. Read more

BMW dealers are not immune from the present financial climate. When you say your friend wants to pay cash down do you mean she will not be trading in her old 316? Also how is she financing the new one or is she lucky enough to have the cash available?

There are loads on E93 CC's on the BMW Uk AUC finder --- do a national search and you will see.

If it was me I would drawer up a shortlist of say 6 cars and then start haggling hard. If your friend is paying cash with no trade in then she is in a very strong position to drive a good deal. As a starter I would be looking for min 10% off plus 12m FRL. That's just a starter though and if they say no I'd move on to the next dealer --- leaving my number should they decide to reconsider.

I bought my E46 'vert over 2 years ago ------- how I wish I was buying it in todays climate.

Having explored the cost of extending my warranty on the Picasso 1.6HDi, after the expiry of 3 yr manufacturer warranty I completed the WD on line application. The quote came out surprisingly expensive, so I decided to do nothing.

However, having left contact details on the web site, I was not surprised to receive a call, offering a further 20% discount. I have deferred the decision for 48 hrs so will try to negotiate a further discount when they call back.

Swmbo and I get away every other weekend in spring and summer to a farm site in the middle of Cheshire, £10 a night, beautifully kept camping field, price includes electricity. Basic toilet and shower but we don't need them. No playground, bar or anything but plenty to do and places to eat in area. 26 miles from home on good roads not holding anyone up. Family and friends visit .... I can store the van there , securely, for £4 a week.

Value or what ?

ok so I've finally got round to rtfm for my new car

nice owners handbook I got with the car explains in great detail how to rotate the wheels in various sequences to even out the tyre wear

EXCEPT!

its got unidirectional tyres on it, and these little rotations would have the tyres quickly pointing in the wrong direction and err not to put too fine a point on it DANGEROUS

now in our ever so health and safety conscious world should I care?

can I assume anyone bothered enough to move their wheels around will know that unidirectional tyres must stay on the same side and can therefore only be moved front to back and back to front on the same side?

are there going to be any folk misled and ending up with tyres pointing the wrong way?

is the handling and braking really unsafe if these tyres are used pointing the wrong way? please don't ask me to test it

anyway I've put the handbook away probably never to be looked at again

Hi All,

No not a swap??

My 75 year old mother wants a new car. Sadly she is insistent that is should be New rather than nearly new.

Her current car is a W reg low spec petrol Golf (in white). She is able to get in and out no problem but she gives lifts to fellow retired teachers who are of more advanced ages so as time goes on something slightly higher would be better. Must be 4/5 doors and for short journeys able to take three on the rear seat,

Most driving will be local. I?ve persuaded her against her original idea of changing to an automatic as it has been 35 years since she has driven one but that may come back as we go round dealers. Also because of misfueling and DPFs I?m tending to advise against diesels.

I?ve suggested a C-Max or a Golf Plus. She said she really fancied that Volvo from the new adverts which I think she means is the XC60 which is too expensive as is the Kuga and probably not what she wants when she sees or drives one in the flesh. I?ve printed CbyC and Road tests from here for her for the C-Max and Golf+. A good NCAP rating for all would be good - this will be carrying my 7-10 year old nephews.

I think the price to change may be as much as 17k but 15k would be a better starting point as ?it must have a sunroof? and I see parking sensors and comfort extras as essential. A good working DAB radio for BBC R7 plays whilst driving from Southend to Oxford the long way on local roads would be welcome.

Any other suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks,

Simon

I have a very elderly customer with a Golf Plus diesel auto which she seems
to love and it is a very well thought out car. Nice family car too
I would have thought without being too big.

I really liked the space in the Golf Plus and it was number 3 on my short-list for a car for sometime. It feels a very solid and safe car.

The seats are, like the Verso, just the right height to slide your bottom in and out so you are not straining to get in and out of the car. Plenty of rear leg and head-room in the back also even when a tall sod like me pushed the driver's seat all the way back.

>>We took out a mortgage in 1972 at the going interest rate of 8%. At that time the >>maximum loan available was 85% of the value of the property (75% if the property was a >>flat) and our application wouldn't have even been considered if we hadn't been saving >>with the mortgage provider for several years beforehand. Applications had to be made in >>person.

Differences 40 yrs ago were

1) multiple of max 3 x income, no bonus/commission - 20% deposit reqd. Most who had a biggish mortgage were social class A&B - if they had money problems then their parents/ family could rally round as they had savings.
2) Most had no other loans, maybe HP on 1/2 items of furniture.
3)No expectation of foreign holidays / 2 cars etc etc
4) No credit cards - had not been invented

I got a current a/c @ 20 yrs old as my parents banked there - I needed a sponsor to open the account. (Still have the same a/c 40+ yrs later!!)

We all know why it will be Wednesday that HJ's reviews of the two new XF models will reappear. So in case somebody says something we need to moderate I've made this read only for now. Only a short wait for the review/video.

Please can someone help.

Early in February my son purchased a second hand Rover 75 from a used car dealership. It is an 03 reg and looked in excellent condition with only 56k on the clock.

After just 6 days the cylinder head went and it was returned via the AA to another garage as requested for repair. After a week he went to collect the car from a tyre bay about 5 miles away from the original garage as we had also noticed that the two back tyres were almost illegal.

Yesterday the AA were called out again to the vehicle and it seems the head gasket has gone yet again! Car is now back at the original garage and we have told them that as of today we wish to reject the vehicle under the Sale of Goods Act. The proprietor has refused our request for monies to be refunded in full saying he does not give refunds.

What are our rights please? Read more

>> Everyone knows these cars are poison.
What a load of rubbish. They have one particularly dodgy engine (the 1.8) but the
rest of them are very sound cars designed under BMW's influence. However opinions like that
do keep them nice and cheap for anyone who wants one. I'd happily have a
ZT version with the BMW diesel engine fitted.

I know where there is one going for £2800 with 148k on the clock - now if this had been a BMW it would be twice the price!!!!! Bargain motoring.
