Hello. I bought my diesel car a few months back & have been really pleased with it. There is one problem however & wanted to ask some advice before starting to hunt for a car part
For the first few weeks after I bought it the 'water in fuel filter' indicater would go on & then go off by itself. Then I stupidly put petrol instead of diesel in one night. So it was cleaned out at a garage & they changed the fuel filter but when I tried to start it to leave the garage, it wouldn't start! And several times after that my indicators wouldn't work.
To cut a long story short, since then 98% of the time in wet/damp weather I have to manually pump the filter a few times before I can get the car started if it's been standing some time.
Took it back to the garage; they changed the copper rings near the filter but it made no difference & told me I need a new fuel pump.
Recently my radio will cut out - often when I'm going round a bend.
I just wanted to ask for some opinions on whether it does seem like I need a new fuel pump before I start hunting for old Peugeot spare parts (new one £60!)

resulting in further demands for payment and visits from disbelieving bailiffs.
that's the thing nowadays...in effect you're prevented from pleading Not Guilty and having your day in a court...because some authority will have passed the debt to bailiffs and/or had your credit rating fiddled with
I have a 2.2 Diesel version. Great car. The other day I left the car to defrost the ice and snow on it. I think the rear wiper must have frozen in place and blown a relay or fuse. I have checked the manual but can't find the right fuse or relay to replace. Does anyone know where it is and the number? Appreciate any help.
PS front wipers & washers all ok. Rear demister and tailgate working fine.
Thanks,

How do you reset the central locking on an Avensis (Year 2000, 1.8l SE)? The central locking keeps opening of its own accord. First it used to lock on its own but now the opposite. Can anyone help please? Read more
Checking my tyre pressures this morning and realised they were a different size to the information on the tyre pressure placard on the car. Standard size is 215/65 x 15 and the tyres fitted are 235/60 x15 on the factory rims. Question is, do I need to tell my insurance company? I must confess I didn't realise they were non standard as the optional tyres are on 16 inch wheels according to the handbook. The only other modification is a cold air induction system which the insurance company know about. Read more
Cheers DD...not a "ticket-getter" speedo then. Think I will inform my insurance co though as Mookfish suggested, just to be on the safe side
I have just started looking for a car for SWMBO, probably a Focus with around £8K budget. What I'd like to know is where are all of these supposed credit-crunch bargains we hear about ? As far as I can see these cars are selling at the same sort of prices (age + mileage) that they were back in Oct last year. If anything there is less availablity that there was then.
I am very willing to be proved wrong, what is going on ?
Is this a motor trade strategy of making sure no matter what that price erosion will not take place ? Read more
A friend bought a brand new (not pre-reg) Vectra 1.9 petrol with lots of toys, and paid extra for paintwork/interior protection and parking sensors for about £9,300 OTR
If that's not a bargain, I don't what is

Hi there,
I have a VW Golf 1.6 that has developed a fault with the air bag light staying on. It started about 6 months ago, so I took it to a local garage who did a diagnostics check. It came back with fault number 00588 and he told me that he thought it needed a new clock spring. So I booked it in and he replaced this and reset the airbag light so it went off.
I drove it for about 2 weeks and then the air bag light came back on. I took it back to the garage and he now says it's something to do with the seatbelt connection now!! I've forked out £150 so far and am not sure I trust what he's saying now!
Does anyone have any suggestions what I do next? I don't really want to drive around with a faulty air bag.
Many thanks in advance for any help

i have a 1.6 2002 focus zetec
Apart from the fact my speed sensor seems duff, drivers window jammed shut, and lambda sensor(pre-cat) needs replacing. and now the Clutch master cylinder has a very small leak....great!
i have a problem where when the car is at normal idle speed it is not exactly smooth and the lights, both interior and exterior have an occasional slight flicker like you would get if idle was too low. rev counter says it idles at around 800.
it would seem that this pink fluffy dice ford has now got all the common faults rolled into one.
Can't wait to finally get it all fixed or give it a viking funeral!

Sounds like an alternator problem. Connect a voltmeter across the battery, you should have near enough 14 volts with the engine running at tickover, my guess is that the voltage is dropping well below that, only attianing 14v at higher revs.
I had some very dangerous occurences of the engine (130 TDCi) cutting out at high speed. I went to a ford garage in Farnborough and they charged me nearly £50 to carry out a diagnostic check, but they found no fault. They were unable to offer me any advice or ideas of what I should do next to sort out the problem. I was genuinely in fear of causing a serious accident.
Honest John pointed me to previous Backroom chat and I discovered from a contributor that Diesel specialists at Englefield Green, A.P. Diesels Ltd, had resolved a similar problem. I met Steve and Vaughan there and explained the problem. They did an on-the-spot diagnostic check and in 5 minutes showed me the computer screen displaying two malfunctioning injectors. Vaughan then took me on a test drive and forced the engine to fail several times thanks to his racing driver skills. Quite a ride!
I booked the car in and they fixed the problem in a couple of hours with two replacement injectors at a very modest cost.
I would just like to put on record the excellent service, skilled work and value for money by A.P. Diesels, the totally poor service by the other garage at Farnborough and full marks to Honest John Backroom for pointing me in the right direction. Thanks everyone - a great result.

Nice to know that there are still a few garages that know what there talking about!

I don't know which fuel pump they are talking about but to my knowledge it only has one, thats the injection pump and that would be £500+ but its very unlikely to be the problem. What you have is a classic case of air ingress, if the fuel primer is of the plunger type rather than the rubber bulb, its quite likely that the diaphragm is leaking. You could try temporararly bypassing the filter, making sure you dont get any dirt into the system, and see if it starts OK. You will probably have to crank it over a bit to get the air out. Fitting a section of clear plastic tube on the input to the pump will allow you to see any air bubbles.
