Does anyone know if it is possible to get to the oil pump on a 1997 A4 1.8T from the oil sump? Not sure if mine is away (hopefully just the switch) but it would be good to know in advance if it is!!!

Further to this posting, my problem has developed!!!!!

Whilst driving at between 60 and 70mph on Monday the oil pressure light came on but went off again quickly when I came off the power. My mechanic replaced the oil pressure switch and everything seemed fine.

Driving home the car was fine driving around town but as soon as I got back onto the dual carriageway the oil pressure light came on again followed by a loud tappetty noise. I stopped the car immediately and had it recovered to the mechanic.

Now when the car is started (briefly) it is very noisy (tappetty) at the top end but the car has no bottom end noise. Also the oil pressure light is OUT.

The mechanic has little experience of this problem occurring with this engine and therefore is unsure where to start!!! Do we remove the sump (which is a swine to get off) and see if there are problems with the pick-up or the pump itself?

I should also add that recently I detected a slight tappet noise and as a result added half a litre of Slick 50 to the engine oil. I wonder if this has perhaps even CAUSED a problem!!!!

Cheers,
Stuart

Has anyone any pointers that would perhaps help us to diagnose this problem???

Hello,

I've recently bought a 2006 Focus Ghia estate, my first Focus. We're very pleased with it, it's a great drive with the CVT box and has been well maintained, being an ex-lease car from a national bank. Mileage is 46k.

There were no nasties on the test drive, but now I notice a loud knock from the front suspension (I assume...) when I drive the car first thing in the morning. The knocking only happens maybe 4 or 5 times, within the first few hundred metres, and then it's fine all day. It's almost as though something is rusting together overnight, and it takes a few jolts to free it up.

Any ideas what it could be, and whether I need to worry just yet? My Googling has revealed that Ford suspension bushes may not be up to scratch, but surely if it's a worn bush then the knocking would be througout the drive, not just the first few hundred metres, no?

Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks for the suggestion, I shall get that looked into. Just out of curiosity, what can I expect to happen if it fails on a drive?

307 HDi 2.0 02, I would like to charge my battery to see if it helps with my starting problem as posted previously, what is the correct disconection/reconection procedure? will i have to reboot the BSI unit as described in other posts? might there be any other issues? The voltage is 12.3V overnight at around - 2 degrees C, i have read that this could indicate a partially discharged state, would this have an effect on starting? thanks in advance. Read more

Take it to anywhere that sells batteries and get them to do a proper dump load test on it.

What's a "main dealer", and does this only apply to BMWs? "Main dealer" seems to be just a description used by the general public. Dealers themselves don't use this description. I get my car serviced at a family owned Ford franchised dealer. They only have 11 employees in total, including the Dealer Principal. Will I have to take my car somewhere else after 2010?

Can anyone advise what could be the problem? My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ( 4 L Petrol)has an intermittent fault (battery drain) If I leave the Jeep over night it has a dead battery in the morning. I have identified the circuit to the A/C heater blower circuit because when I remove the 40 amp fuse there is no problem. When I put a meter across the fuse holder, sure enough when ignition is off the circuit is open.. All other systems work ok The heater blower works ok when the fuse is installed. Any ideas where the short could be ??? Read more

I wonder how those that condoned the snow balling of vehicles in a recent thread , square up to their beliefs when faced with this sort of thing.

>Ridiculous idea that what kids get up to nowadays is in any way new.

You are probably right, but what I think may have changed is the variety of things they can get up to, and the money they have to do them with. Perhaps they should be encouraged to stay indoors on their playstations more, rather than less?

Can anyone think of any cheap, underrated performance cars on the used market at the moment. I think there are a few undiscovered gems that would make great weekend cars for bangernomics money.

How about the Peugeot 306 xsi or the Nissan Primera GT? Both are highly rated by those who have driven them and good examples are little more than £1k.

Are there any other examples of cars that can provide such cheap thrills? The quirkier the better! Read more

Look in yellow pages for auto locksmith. They'll be able to get you in and provide and code new keys.

Now the snow has gone, the carnage its caused to our roads is clear. Potholes and broken surfaces everywhere. this will cost a fortune to fix.

We've got the potholes, we have had the snow and the 'enhanced' potholes .... and today? We have the floods.
Our lane has been vastly 'improved' by the council over the past two years "re-instating" the verges (their words, when I rang to ask what was being done) - which, of course, prevents rain running off the road and into the ditches. Last time I saw workmen doing this, I asked if they had ever been in the lane when it rained, so they would know where to put gaps - what a silly question.

focusdriverneedshelp

Hi All,

My 53 reg focus has just started playing up and looking for some help.
Once started the battery light is off but after about 10 seconds it starts illuminating and going on and off or stays permently on. If it comes on and off and i put the interier light on this will flash on and off as well, you can also here a clicking noise coming from around the dashboard (maybe a relay?)
Once as well whilst driving the battery light, handbrake light, abs light all where flashing at the same time and also all the dials (speedo , rev counter, fual and temp gauge) would turn off and come on again after about 3 secs.
Car drives fine with all this happening and seems to hold charge as car always starts.
Any idea what is causing this?
Many thanx for any help
