Mondy Man

Hi guys,

I have a 1.8 Mondeo Verona (LX) with the 16v Zetec engine. With 92k on it, Ive serviced it every 10000k since I bought the car at 30k.

In the last three months I've had a new cat, clutch and drive shafts. Car seemed to going well, but over the last couple of weeks the performance seems to have dropped off. No problems sitting at motorway speeds but accelerating up to sixty feels like an effort. (Thashing it to get very little acceleration)

Any reccomendations as to get the old gal running abit better? Tuning maybe?

My son's '99 1.6 Focus is using a lot of oil. The local garage has had it on a rolling road but there's no sign of burning & absolutely no leaks. I've heard of a similar problem with an Audi A4 which was diagnosed as a porous cylinder head. What is this, and can it happen with the Focus engine? Read more

Ford recommended 5W30 oil for my 1999 1.8i - shouldn't the 1.6 use the same ?

I've been a member of a couple of Focus forums for a while and don't remember reading anything about porous cylinder heads.

My Focus had done around 86k miles when I sold it and very rarely needed topping up between services (approx. 10k per year) so the usage you mention does sound excessive, from my experience at least.

' Manchester United soccer star Carlos Tevez has had his £140,000 Bentley seized because he does not have a full UK driving licence, police said.
The 25-year-old Argentina international was stopped by traffic officers on the M60 near Stretford, Greater Manchester. His car has been impounded.
Police said they pulled his car over, suspecting the tinting on its windows was too dark.
Tests at the roadside showed the tint was illegal, police said.
"Shortly after 0920 GMT on Friday officers pulled over a Bentley close to junction 7 of the M60," said a police spokesman.
"The officers were concerned certain windows were illegally tinted. They were tested and found to be too dark so a prohibition notice was issued to the driver.
"When asked to provide his documentation, it was discovered the driver did not have a full UK driving licence and was advised to arrange removal of the car.
"As he could not arrange this, the car was removed under Section 165 of Road Traffic Act 1988."'

He has been in this country for several years and has been driving for all that time. Yet it has taken this long to discover he does not have the right licence. When ever I have bought a vehicle from a dealership, I have been asked to show my licence, whether it be for a test drive or when signing the various purchase documents.
Does the fact that he has, in effect, not had a proper licence, all so mean he has not been covered by his insurance ? Read more

Loads of bizarre ramblings removed from this thread (have some of you been indulging in some warming alcohol?) - apologies if your post got caught up in it - there was too much to weed through.

Back to the topic in hand, anyway, please. Thanks

My car was crashed into and has been taken to the accident repair place yesterday.

If truth be told, although i dearly loved my car, now that it has been crashed into, i dont think that i want it back.. Due to the fact i think that it will be hard to sell when i eventually want to sell it... sounds corny, but i think the love i had for the car has now gone as its now "damaged goods", even when its fixed.

If it get wrote off i think i will be happy..... Do you think it will be?
The car is a 51reg Jaguar x type with 60k and FSH worth about £3500.. the damage occured is the following:
Front bumper,
bonnet,
drivers front wing,
drivers headlight unit,
drivers front wheel will no longer turn,
washer tank,
ABS piping
alloy seems to have been pushed back.

If the car is seen to be worth fixing, can i demand that it gets fixed by my main Jaguar dealer, as it i DO have to have it back, i want it fixed by the main dealer for piece of mind etc..

thanks for the help

Scott

I think it will be a write off from the damage ( and other associated damage it will have caused) but, if you were totally blame free then yes you can insist on having it repaired at a repairer of your choice.

My choice would not be a main dealer (who may outsource such work) but a quality bodyshop that I knew of, or was recommended to.

The usual Shell filling station was full - so went across the road to BP. The hoses are now black and the allegedly confusing label removed from the pump handle. (actually the top surface of the plastic `advertising surface` on the handle was missing - so not sure about that)

Seeming to foam in the filler neck like a rabid dog - kept adding another litre as the foam receded and advanced - up and down the filler neck. Eventually putting half a litre down the body work - can`t remember when I last did that.
I last saw this years ago using supermarket Derv and perhaps have been spoilt by exclusively using Shell none foaming fuel which gives a clear fuel `surface` in the filler neck.

So what`s the score on foaming - for those who fill up with differing brands - perhaps this was a one off?

Wonder if silicone has gone into petrol then? Or can filling stations managers (are they franchised?) order a tanker full of `cheapo` amongst all the additived regular fuel - to make a fast buck?

(Wasn`t a filling station on the upper A1 caught doing that around 12 years ago)

Anyway, It wasn`t the fill rate as the Mk2`s filler neck seems really restrictive - if you don`t want repeated cut off - you have to insert the nozzle only about four inches and literally pour it steadily in.

Incidentally, went out East to Bridlington yesterday - no snow or indeed salt on the roads - returned home and fueled the van at the usual Shell place and no foam at all.

Do they complement each other or one is replacement for another?

Fitting winter tyres is a bit involved task. Snow chain fitting looks like easier option (they are cheaper than tyres).

Do you use them in UK?

Insurance can not be invalidated for using snow chains.

3rd party cover would remain, regardles of other possibilities!

I'm removing the gearbox to change the clutch. there are two linkages that I have successfully (and easily) disconnected from their ball joints on the back of the gearbox. It was just a matter of pressing the top of the ball joint which allowed the joint to be released from the ball.

There is a third balljoint linkage that is of a different design that I have not been able to disconnect. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. Read more

I've just looked at my Haynes manual and (assuming you're referring to the two large & one small balljoint connected to a cranked lever) it says simply prize off with a flat bladed screwdriver. Having looked at the picture in Haymes I would be inclined to use long nosed pliers and lever it upwards uniformally.

Hope this helps
