I think JC's comments were rather watered down I won't say what I am thinking as I will be banned instantly.
He keeps saying everything is fine but when I wake up to find to recieve a letter informing me that one my clients has gone bust and do they owe me any money everything is not fine. Half my mates are now unemployed because of this recession. I don't think GB will be sueing him for slander some how on this one :). Read more
The way I see it is thus . . . . . .
If - say - Billy Connolly had made this remark we would be rolling up and down the aisles wailing for surgeons to fix our sides.
1st thing - he is Scottish - fact
2nd - he has only one (working) eye - fact (all the easier to take the eye off the ball then . . .)
3rd - Idiot. JC is entitled to an opinion. That happens to be his (and that of many including myself, although Lying B is what I would say about him and politicians in general) and he is entitled to it.
Why the brouhaha over this? It really is a non-news item. Are opinions now going to start incurring penalty points? this country has gone PC daft if you ask me . . . . . .
Incidentally I am (half) Scottish and live north of Hadrians Wall. I don't find this in any way racially offensive. Funny yes, offensive no.

>And that was 1968 ..
A friend of ours returned to her Cortina around then stealthily enough to disturb the scallies, so that they left their Ford master key in the lock ...
I know this share is falling in recent years but somebody has given me a Which guide to cars from 1991 and it states that Ford have 25% of the market (probably not even 10% now). When you consider the awful cars of 1991, the MK3 Fiesta (was ok but no 205), the original pre modified Escort MK5 (the worst car Ford ever made?), the Siera a by then ten year old rotbox and the Granada which was just average.
So how did they get away wtih it for so long? I am a Ford fan btw I just find it strange how they managed to gain such a share, but then BL did with their crap products too. How did the Marina ever sell 1.3 million? Read more
I remember going to "view" a Metro in a showroom when they were introduced. One of the things which put me off was the handfull of wheel nuts in the heater intake of the one I saw.
I have a 1998 (S-reg) Peugeot 306 cabriolet which was shunted from behind damaging the bumper & rear panel. The bodyshop have quoted £1400 to get the repairs done and they are not sure if the boot lid needs replacing as well. I assumed that it would be written off given that I can get a similar car for £1800 on autotrader and that parkers value a v plate car for £1800 in good condition. To my surprise, the 3rd parties insurers have authorised the repairs and when I queried this with them, they valued my car for £2,500, so it is deemed as repairable. I am not keen on getting my car repaired, as no matter how good the repair is, it?s going to stand out against 10 year old paintwork (the repair will be even more apparent if the bootlid is replaced). So my question is - given that the quoted repairs are £1400 and that I may need a new boot lid and that I will need a hire car while mine is being repaired, would they accept a suggestion to give me say £1300 to write the car off and letting me keep the car (so I can sell some bits of it), thereby saving the potential cost of additional repairs and hire car costs, and giving me the opportunity of buying a non repaired car?

Just goes to show if you don't ask, you don't get!!
Glad you got a result. Always worth asking
My 306 has a tendency to slowly wander to left when I take my hands off the wheel. It's not violent but means I have to keep some pressure on wheel to stop it. It's had a new O/S ball joint and a new O/S droplink. It also klunks a bit when turning at low speeds - parking etc. Any ideas what this could be and how to correct it?
One more thing - I think I have a glow plug out as it's a bit lumpy when started from cold and after a bit of revs it's fine. Will it do a lot of damage to run it like this until I can change them

Tracking won't normally help, it just causes the tyres to wear unevenly, its not the tow in/out that's the problem its the vertical angle of the wheel, called the 'camber angle' it causes the bottom of the wheel to lean toward or away from the middle of the car, its not normally adjustable but it can be caused by worn suspension bushes.
I guess it had to happen, ive managed to crunch to misses car. Downhill out the village, the old Astra infront of me stuffed it in the verge, got out and promptly did it again 20m further one and the second time I couldnt avoid him, no grip at all.
Managed to just glance off it cracking the Sirions bumper, creasing the wing and scratching headlamp. Underneath looks fine, thank goodness for crumple zones - Impact was under 10 mph.
His just a smashed rear light lense - a write off if he claims for anythingelse I would think - it was a £150 car at best.
Already arranged repairs although £500 excess stings abit. Goes in Tuesday. Such a hassle though. Read more
Just checked it - no suprises, its not insured. Makes a change to hit an uninsured driver vs the usual getting hit BY one :-)
Just read this on the BBC news website and came to post the same. How frightening to have ice fall on your car and smash the windscreen!
Edit: I wonder how many other gantries might have melting sheet ice that might fall on cars!
I modified the thread title to make it more specific
Several villages in the area have recently installed new entrance signs stating the village name and the 30 mph limit encircled in black, these also have speed limits painted on the ground in white. Are these enforceable? I haven't actually been caught or anything just curiosity.
What about temporary speed limits on motorways which don't have circles just a number?
Cheers

as it's a built up area and if it has streetlights the limit is 30 anyway
Really has nothing to do with being a built up area. Any road with streetlights is 30mph unless signed to the contrary. Any road without streetlights is 60mph (70 for DC and MWay)
unless signed to the contrary.
My friend has bought in October, a 53 plate Nissan Almera 18. SE from a Main Dealer in Doncaster, it had 38 K on the clkock and one previous owner. It seemed fine but yesterday It has broken down.
I seem to remember that main dealers have to guarantee their cars for a period of time, under the sale of goods act.
I have yet to ascertain the exact nature of this breakdown, as the owner is a woman, all she can tell me is that it is something to do with a shaft.
Could it be the crankshaft position sensor ?
In any case I told her to call the Nissan garage that sold it.
I thought these were very relaible cars so its a bit of a nusiance.
Any Advice ? Read more
Thanks for the update, always good to see how these things turn out.
I agree with what PD is saying, this mystical "warranty" is not a warranty at all, it merely means that the car must be of "satisfactory quality" and if it isn't you can get a refund (or partial refund if you've used the car a bit)
Now, I'll bet a month's wages that the dealer's perception of satisfactory quality and the customer's perception differ by an order of magnitude. Yes, if buying a nearly new car then it's reasonable to expect that most things will work for a good period of time, however, as PD rightly points out, if you go buying an 8 year old car with 100K on the clock and the clutch goes 3 months into your ownership you will have a hard time arguing that it isn't acceptable on a car of that age. There is case law to back this up but I wouldn't have a clue where to dig for it.
It's about time that people stopped telling newbies that they get a 6 month warranty on all cars under SOGA, what most people take that to means is "great, if the cd player on my old second hand car stops working I can take it back and they have to fix it.", what they really should be thinking is "great, if something totally unacceptable goes wrong with the car then I have a legal recourse to force the dealer to refund me." Even then they forget that the definition of unacceptable will be open to debate and they may have to be prepared to go to court to debate it.

>>>you can have all 4 different brands of tyres
Yes you probably can, but would you wear an odd pair of shoes?
If you were changing your oil would you put different brands in?
IMO, tyres grip differently, so I definitely would not put odd tyres on the same axle.
