Hi chaps, my faithful old Rover 75 has, more or less, died - it is now worth diddly. I can get £1K for it (so they say) against a Corsa Active 1.3 CDTi making the price OTR £8,855 - seems pretty good to me - any thoughts / comments most welcome. Regards Roger Read more

My dads car is not running right. It passed the emissions in August in this state but I have fiddeled about it with it and its running a lot smoother but its still not right.
First symtpon was the car was loosing brake fluid, this was assumed to be a leaking clutch slave cylinder (posted about it at the time) however 8000 miles later the clutch is fine the only thing when driving it I notice is the 1st gear feels a little bit worn.
It failed the MOT in August on brake pipes and the inspector said the car was dangerious to drive, the pipes were replaced and since then the fluid losss seems to have stopped, could a slave cylinder repair a leak by itself if gunk got built up or was the leak probably a brake pipe after all? (it has a hydraulic clutch).
The other issue is that we have done nearly 15,000 miles in the car and the top end has always sounded silent, but its now showing symptons of stem seal failure (there is a puff of blue smoke at start up and it does use a bit of oil although only around 1 litre per 1000 miles which is normal anyway for the engine?). However the engine sounds really noisy its not a rattle it is almost like a pump (the temperature gauge reads fairly high but never over heats). Could this be a failing water pump? Again its been like this for ages.
There is also a thick black ring at the tip of the exhaust so I assume it is running rich. I've just had the plugs changed so its running a lot smoother now, it was mis firing before it still does a tiny bit but its hardly noticable. Would I right in thinking that worn plugs would cause it to run rich because of unburnt fuel? Also would it be wise getting those valve clearences checked in case they are too tight?
Sorry for the long post, I have foudn most the issues with this car have been silly niggles which have been very easy to fix once I know what the fault was.

Its certainly not a knock, more of a hum almost like a hoover sort of sound as if the blower was on full but it comes from the engine area.
The back box is only 4 months old.
The 1st gear is just a bit stiff even from idle, it goes in perfectly fine but its not smooth and fluid like it should be on these gearboxes.
I will check the water pump later and get the clearences checked, we just need to get this thing up to another 10k without spending too much money (this is linked to the fact I need a new car).
I can put up with noises as longs as its not killing the engine in the process.
hi, im new to this forum and quite new to repairing cars.
I have had a new door lock fitted to the drivers side and got a whole set of spares ignition key barrel ,door lock, petrol cap etc from and old scrap car. THis means i have 2 keys. This may be a stupid question But if i am changing the ignition key barrel is it as simple as changing the door lock or is it more complicated. would it be just be a case of taking out the old key barrel then putting the new one in.
Thanks in advance

Take the shroud off by the three screws underneath the column.
Remove the retaining screw and connector on the immobiliser tranciever, then remove the transceiver.
Turn the key to position I, then insert a screwdriver into the detent on the top of the cylinder, and pull the cylinder out.
Installation is the reserval of removal as they say.
Starting off in Gods country by the looks of it.

Doubt if a 50s Zephyr would be quick enough!
Well, maybe in the 30 limits! ;)
Anyhow the point about going on a scenic drive is to enjoy the scenery so you don't want to go fast... slow car, scenic drive, twisty roads of Wales... long tail behind him?

Yes, Dacia has been selling here in Germany for a while. They have a clever marketing campaign and some very keen prices, the Logan MCV (estate) costing around 8000 Euros which is around 60% of the price of a new Golf or Focus. It's also much better looking than you would expect a cheap car to be and available as a 7 seater.
Hi
Seems to me that one of the biggest drawbacks with going outside the dealer network for servicing in the early years of a car's life is that other garages will not have access to technical service bulletins, TSBs I think they're called.
Making a quick check online, American consumers seem to be able to access these online. Is anyone aware of a similar resource for the UK, in my case for Ford?
Cheers,

Had a browse today DP but most discs were mainly pre 2004 on most models. The copy you recommend, does it cover 2007 Focus models?
I'm looking for a larger car, something which can cope with a growing family and which will be reliable for the next few years, and one model I've considered is a Vauxhall Zafira B. However, I have read the owner reviews for this car on the What Car? website, and they have dissuaded me from buying one (I have around £7k to spend). Am I just being overly cautious here, or should I take note? Is it a coincidence that you can get a 2007 Zafira from a main dealer with average mileage for under £7k, when a similar aged Verso is at least a third more expensive? Is it all down to badge snobbery? Read more
Just bought a 3 month old Zafira....
Nice car to drive. Does everything well... But
Annoying rattle in dash when warm between 2-3000 RPM.
Petrol gauge doesnot seem reliable... Shows 3/4 but is actually full.
Tailgate takes some shutting...
However deal was excellant, suits out needs very well, and hopefully can get the above fixed soon.
I did look at the Kia carens (imports for £7700) new. Really were nice to drive..however a little two much plastic. This would have been my choice, but wife won as the parking brake and auto were strange to her.....

Around one third (depending on union) goes to a 'Political Fund', most of that goes to the Labour party, some to Socialist worker, some to Anti-facist Alliance, some to very small groups such as general rabble-rousers. You can opt-out, but they usually make you jump through hoops with forms that repeatedly get lost etc...
