Quite a few motoring related programmes on BBC Four this week. I could do with an 8th day of the week dedicated to watching PVR recordings!
As regards Goathland - Emmerdale hasn't been filmed in the 'real' Emmerdale village for years - it doesn't stop coachloads turning up at the village every week to buy a postcard and go for a pint in the 'Woolpack'.

Richard Wilson did a preview on the One show last night and there was an excruciating clip which showed him grinding the gears of a 60's VW camper van .
Every change was noisy and at one time he ended up in reverse by mistake..... If I was the
VW owner I'd not be very happy.

He only ever had an "auto" licence before this series.

... The makers of TV's ' Heartbeat " have pulled the plug on the series...
According to itv.com, they haven't:
"Axing reports untrue"
Reports that ITV dramas Heartbeat and its spin-off show The Royal are being axed are untrue, an ITV spokesman has confirmed.
In fact a large number of episodes of both shows have been planned for the future.
The spokesperson said: "Heartbeat and The Royal are an important part of the ITV schedule and are currently in production.
"Production will take a rest after this year's filming finishes, but a large number of episodes have already been stockpiled."
|
Its the length of the 'rest " that is worrying the traders in Goathland and surrounding villages.
There is a petition running to save the series and several local service providers to the production unit have had their contracts terminated.

Yep, and the residents are hoping the TV mob never come back.
|
No, the residents on the whole of been very supportive of the cast and crew making the programs. They really have bought a lot of work to an area that has little to offer the younger members of the village. Waiting on in Tea Rooms, helping in cafe kitchens, serving in the gift shops that had sprung up. Not careers by any means but paid employment.

Maybe he should try the A487 from Fishguard via St David's to Haverfordwest.
A brilliant road to sprint in A Ford Ka.

Anybody watch the first one ?
Richard Wilson driving a nice old half timbered Morris Minor Traveller and unable to do a hill start in Whitby.
He had to hand over to one of the Goths he was transporting to get him up the Abbey at the top of the hill.
Again , I would be questioning why someone who obviously has no real driving skills should be let loose on these classic motors.
If I was the owner of the Moggie I'd have been distraught at the way the clutch was being treated......
|
I heard him crashing the gearbox a couple of times as well. Was the Goth insured to drive the vehicle on a public road ? I very much doubt it.

Why doubt it? His Caddy would most likely be on fully comp and DOC is still quite common.
Now if there was only an ANPR van in Whitby at the time. (oh no, it wouldn't have said anything until the upgrade to the face recognition software is implemented).

DOC is with the owners permission. As Richard Wilson was not the owner of the Morris, how could he have given permission ?

Who said he did? Even in the wilds of North Yorkshire, mobile phones are available.
There again if the BBC arranged the insurance cover from their brokers it is usually under an any driver group policy.

Whitby and the surrounding area's that where featured are a hour away from me, and being a Yorkshire Man very close to my heart
If anyone hasnt been to the places featured then I would really recommend it, the long road past the huge hole, and flyingdales is a great drive, but it is always busy, and I love Whitby and have been many times.
The steep bank to the back of the abby needless to say was no problem for SWMBO C4 Auto and my Astra jaunts up there -however these are modern cars and i would not like to have gone up in the Morris Minor.

Why not he may be covered under his own insurance to drive 3rd party with there permission - and im probs guessing that it was all pre-arranged stunt and checked beforehand
|
if its not RW car, then someone must own it, and gave permission they where probs there when the filming took place, maybe some special insurance was taken out on the car to allow anyone working on the programme to drive it, and as the Gentleman dressed in black was technically on the programme. maybe thats how they got round it.
|
Watched it earlier on catchup and quite enjoyed it in a quirky sort of way... I'll be watching the rest of the series as well..
Mind you I like a lot of those "travel" progs based on old maps and guides like the ones done with that guy with the brolly!
|
I drove past flyingdales when it was a series of giant golfballs. In the slight mist rising off the moor it had a real quatermass feel about it....... very spooky
Next week is north wales - in a ford zephyr i think

My Dad had a Zephyr Six. Bench seat column change. Armrest in the centre of the front seat was my perch. No seatbelts of course. No ill effects eithrrrrrrrgghhhh
|
MrX - but surely the potentially uninsured driver is an 'innocent motorist' judging by some of your other posts?? He should be left alone to do exactly as he pleases.
|
I questioned whether he had insurance to drive the vehicle. I didn't say it should be confiscated straight off. A person ( R.Wilson ) who was with the vehicle in the first place will have been insured so I see no need for seizure but room to prosecute person at wheel for no ins if that was the case.
|
I'm prettey sure that the TV companies arrange their own insurance for these progs, I remember talking to a guy who had a Cambridge that they used for Heartbeat saying so... And if they didn't the owned of the car would have to have some sort of commercial insurance as the chances are he's (or she's) getting paid for its use... most commercial policies would be any driver, I suspect.
However lets not get bogged down in a discussion that none of us can confirm one way or the other and stick with the prog itself, eh?!
Anyone know whats next?
|
Some one driving a Zephyr around North Wales so they're bound to get a ticket from the mad mullah.
|
:-)
Doubt if a 50s Zephyr would be quick enough!
Well, maybe in the 30 limits! ;)
Anyhow the point about going on a scenic drive is to enjoy the scenery so you don't want to go fast... slow car, scenic drive, twisty roads of Wales... long tail behind him?
