les 318 si

Hi can anyone help me I have a E46 2ltr which has started intermittently cutting out & will not start for about 30 min. When it cuts out all warning lights light up. it went on diagnostic & came up with numerous errors including camshaft timing - too late, engine speed sensor - no signal, ECU - signal error, camshaft posisition sensor (intake) - speed signal error, camshaft timing - too early (both A & B). When reset the car will drive fine for about 1 hr then will do the same again. I've been told it could be the crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensors, does anyone know if this would cure the problem or if it could be something more serious? any help would be appreciated. This is probably a Valvtronic engine 318 which are known for problems with cam and crankshaft(engine speed) sensor causing cutting out and stalling.Get them both changed .The crank sensor is a pig to access and usually requires removal of the inlet manifold.hth

A friend has a 96 A4 estate and appears to have intermittant imobiliser probs.
Sometimes it won't start plays with key it then fires and run without probs. The AA man said he is almost certain its the key.
Local VAG specialist gets a fault code of intermittant fault! Has quoted £250 for replacement
Question can the Immobiliser be bypassed? & car run without one? Read more

About to have kittens!

My petrol clio Alize (90+k miles) has just started making a high pitch noise (like an aircraft getting ready for take off) - noticable becuase I do a lot of local driving!. I took it into Renault today and on popping the hood they said it sounded like the auxillary belt but it may be the cam belt and quoted from £150 - £500! The service manager was quite blase about it like I had a spare £500! Any advice?

About to have kittens!

I did have a new cam belt fitted sometime before 2005 but can't remember when - so fingers crossed it's the aux. Ta.v.much for the advice - now all I have to do is find a non dealer garage!

currently have a vectra 1.8 petrol which is misfiring from inlet manifold at about 2000 revs get past this its okay, it improves when warm. Currenly relplace MAF, canister purge valve , dis pack, removed egr valve and it is working checked for leaks checked pipes etc, cleaned throttle and hole resealed gasket with no avail, still same problem. i did the paperclip test and faults were 0443 tank vent valve which i replaced 0100 maf which i also replaced 0110, 1405 egr. blanked this no joy 0135 and 0130 o2 sensor, also replaced, i have also done the yellow wire earth mod no joy.
i have reset ecu but same faults occur.

This is really taking its toll on me and have tried everything any ideas ?

Ecu light is on and off at the mo but no new faults stored and car not driveable due to misfire

That sounds pretty random, but glad it's fixed, thanks for the update.

Just put car through MOT last monday - next day it started pulling to the left.

this morning took it to Kwik Fit - as thought it could be tracking. Fella at Kwik Fit said it wasnt tracking - said garage had put wrong tyre on and it had then caused wheel rim to buckle - hence car pulling to the left.

I just dont see how a garage could put the wrong tyre on - what other causes are there for the wheel rim to buckle?

It didn't pull to left before the MOT - I'm taking back to garage who did MOT tmrw morning.

Anybody got any advice on what i should say to them? Surely I shouldnt be liable to pay for any of the work that needs doing if it was the wrong tyre they put on.

How can I be sure they just don't fob me off and they claim it wasn't that but something else which i would be liable to pay for.

cheers

Rims can buckle if you hit a kerb or similar.

Take any information from KF with you.

Unsure what "the wrong tyre" means, exactly.

Where do I find crankshaft sensor - no mention or diagram in Haynes Manual?

Is it difficult to replace? Read more

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Stand by the passenger side front wing the gearbox is nearest you (assuming its a K series) the sensor is on the right hand side of the engine as you are looking at it low down and is inserted through the crankcase web where the engine and gearbox meet in a horizontal plane above the offside driveshaft. It has a short lead which plugs into a blue coloured plug which you may see quite easily amongst the coolant pipes running across the end of the engine and round the side. Its held in with two bolts (8mm hex) but can sometimes be a swine to get out. Use a squirt of wd40 and try to get the sensor to rotate before pulling it out towards the offside of the engine bay.
Phew!

My normally well-behaved Xedos has developed an odd tendency to lurch at low(ish) revs in low gears.

This is most noticeable when pulling away - there is no power below 2-3k revs - and I have to feather the clutch a lot more than I would like. Even then, there is a fair amount of what feels like fuel surge, but I'm not up to speed on how injection systems behave, I'm afraid. The slow running is lumpy and I've wound in the butterfly stop screw, with only partial success. If it had a carburettor, I would suspect the low speed jets, but I don't know what the equivalent would be! It could almost be an ignition problem (HJ mentions this in the car-by-car) but there are plenty of sparks at idle, despite the lumpiness, so I suspect fuel, although at high speed there is no problem.

I'm hoping these are symptoms of something obvious that I'm just unfamiliar with. Since we've had Mazdas, I've got very rusty on fault diagnosis...

I have had exactly the same symptoms in the last 2 weeks - with exactly the same cause - cracks in the large air hose - I've just taped up the cracked hose for now and the engine is running perfectly again. I can have a new hose fiited at the next service.
Thanks to this string I was saved a lot of frustration and cost.

We've all seen some TV series or other where our erstwhile detective hero jumps into the passenger seat of some third party and demands 'follow that car', but is there any legal authority for a policeman to commandeer a car ?

We have police foot patrols in our (small) city centre shopping area, and also around the football stadium on match days. Both an easy walk from the police station. Usually a few mobile police around as well so not much chance of being hijacked for a car chase. If you were, would any speed camera penalties be withdrawn? I would not count on it!

I recently changed both the alternator and starter motor on my Rover 214i and now my car won't stop running, even when I take the key out of the ignition or take the battery off. The only thing that turns the car off is switching the headlights on. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

Thanks... Read more

I have a 218sd (peugeot XUD diesel engine) which had the same problem.I fitted a new stop solenoid to the injection pump which solved it.The price varied between £130+vat at the dealer to £15+vat at a local car parts shop. You have a petrol injection engine.Whether they have a stop solenoid with that model I cannot say.

In Sep 2008 my engine temp went to 100 degrees when idling. Had the radiator flushed, new thermostat fitted, and water pump replaced. The temp. was fine for 8,000 km and then started playing up again. I had the thermo fan switch replaced and temp was still going up to 100. Last week had a diagnostics guy look at it and the little computer that runs the cooling system (sorry, can't remember what it's called)was replaced. Now the temp goes up to 105. Head gasket and spark plugs have been checked and are fine. At the same time the outside temp. display has gone haywire, the aerial has worked twice in 2 months, sometimes the roof won't work, and once I couldn't eject a CD for 3 days. Any suggestions (other than torching the car!) would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Is the fan cutting in and if it is does the temp still rise? Temp gauge in car is not linear so how do you judge the actual temp of 100?
