I have an A3 Code AVU and the water pump failed causing a boil up ...replaced pump and head gasket also fitted new rings and glaze busted the bores had head skimmed and pressure tested re ground the valves and the compression is still not as good as id like (around 110) the car will run with a tow but cuts instantly when allowed to drop below about 1200 revs like ive turned off the ignition no missfire just a staight stop. ive tested the spark and fuel at cranking and both are fine and ideas id be really grateful

On the other 1.6 A3 engines of that age there is a hall effect sensor G40 associated to the Cam sproket which must be centered on assembly and is in addition to the engine speed sensor. G28. Regards Peter

Just wondered if others have had this problem.

Most of the time, when I click on the homepage I only get the two rows of links at the top. The rest of the page is blank, although I have noticed the text "my content" appears at the left hand side in brackets.
I can get to the back room etc using the links.

Perhaps one time in twenty the page loads ok.

I have tried deleting cookies, temp internet files etc. but nothing seems to work.

It's not that I'm that desperate to see the page, it's just a bit frustrating.

( I'm using WinXP, with IE8 in compatability mode, if it helps ) Read more

What happened to "What Women Want" & Ultraviolet on HJ's site?

I notice in "The Daily Telegraph" a reference to "womenandwheels.co.uk". Similar? Read more

Having a white car in Sweden is hard work. After a winter, we have to clean with a product to get rid of tar thrown up by the studs, as well as rust stains from the metal worn off the studs, and granite dust.

Someone suggested using clay after the cleaning to get rid of all the marks and cleaner residue.

So what is it, how does it work, and how do you use it? Read more

Check out this link on www.valetingcars.com it tells you all about clay bars and why you should use it. http://valetingcars.com/valeting-information.html

I have a BMW 530d sport saloon 05/05 (E60??). Have only owned it for a couple of months and having always been a DIY person (apart from having had a Co car for the last 20 yrs!!) would somebody plse confirm the following:
1 Where is the battery! (I feel a right twit for not being able to find it!!)
2. Have bought a new oil filter element and the correct oil - anything unusual to look out for when changing the oil and where is the oil filter??
Many thanks

Battery will be in the boot behind a cover of some sort. I think which side its on depends on the model.

Was driving home on Monday afternoon and was behind a W reg Ford Fiesta, it had a fairly large poster in it's back window that read: (or pretty much read)

I have recently been 'done' for speeding for the 1st time
34MPH in a 30MPH zone, it's cost me points and a fine
I'm driving slowly because of this... So If you're in hurry
please feel free to pass me... When it's safe of course
or they might 'do' you as well :)

So I passed when it was safe and it was a little old Granny, she must of been in her 80's and gave me a big smile and cheery wave. She must of been driving at around 23mph, normally I'd be annoyed at someone travelling so slow, but the notice in her rear window made me chuckle.

I think the Goolies are a sub-set of the yellowbellies?

It's a "Maxximus G-Force", according to an article in "The Daily Telegraph". 0-60 in just over 2 seconds. 0-100 in 4 1/2. 100-0 in just under 9 seconds.

What are the distances involved?

0-60 in 2 seconds = ? yards
0-100 in 4 1/2 = ?
100-0 in 9 = ? Read more

DVD's calculations are braking distance calculations, sensibly, assuming a co-efficient of friction of 0.7 between the tyre and the road, and an initial speed.

In broad agreement with Focus's sums;

% Assuming constant acceleration
% s=t*(v+u)/2
% u=0
% s= 0.5 * v * t
v_mph=60;
% convert to metres per second
v_ms=v_mph*1609.3/3600;
t=2;
s=0.5*v_ms*t

s =

26.8217
a=v_ms/t

a =

13.4108

So, 27 metres or so - The strange thing is that it requires a coefficient of friction between the tyre and the road of nearly 1.4, which means the tyres must be quite grippy, and there would be no chance of acheiving those figures on a typical wet, greasy UK road.

Hi,

Audi are quoting £329 for a timing belt change on my A3. Should I bite the bullet and get this done at Audi or should I be able to get this significantly cheaper?

Best regards,

Hi there,

I think the bulb has gone for the low petrol warning - any advice on how to change the bulb? It's a Mondeo Zetec S 2.5 V6 51 plate/02 manufacture if that helps.

I've tried taking the bottom of the dash off to gain access but don't seem to be able to find a way to remove the actual dash or reach up to the back of the cluster to change a bulb.

Any help VERY gratefully received.
