i seem to have quite a bit of white smoke blowing from me exhaust but it only seems to do it when the engine has got warm. it mainly happends when im stopped at a set of lights or a junction. could this be a problem ??

just been told that with white smoke it could be the head gone. is this true ?
|
|
Is it smoke or steam? Head gasket failure can be indicated by steam from the exhaust even when the engine is hot, check ( carefully) for bubbles in the header tank, or get the tank 'sniffed' for exhaust gases by a garage.

i always thought that if the head had gone then it would use water and/or water mix with the oil. there is no sign of water mixing with the oil..

Depends where the gasket fails, if it goes between the bore and a coolant channel then it won't mix with the oil. You should be using coolant though if it is steam out the exhaust.

not used a drop of water. so it could be white smoke and not steam.... but y white smoke ?

right i have just had checked all the levels all ok. the oil is the right colour, ive got no bubbles coming into header tank. BUT i have find that its blowing slightly from the exhaust manifold and also it sounds like its blowing from the inlet manifold (my just need bolts doing) or could be cracked ? could these probs cause the poor mpg and also could this be causing the white smoke ??

To answer part of your question, the exhaust studs do tend to snap on these engines; I've had it happen on two of the last three I've owned. If this has happened on the inlet as well then there is unmetered air entering the intake so yes this is likely to affect consumption.

I have a vectra with the same engine. and also have these probs to with the white smoke/steam. also the mpg seems to be down as well as performance which seems to be down about 20 - 30%. There is also a slight wheezing noise that increases with the speed of the engine. Going to do a compression test as a next resort.

I have read you're other posts now as well. The probs I have are very similar. Going to ckeck the inlet and the ex manifolds for leeks, I will let you know how i get on. cheers
