Took a look under the bonnet of the Jazz this morning and thought it could do with a bit of a spring clean !
Is there anything out there that I can simply spray on and wipe off without too much effort ? I mean the actual engine and bit and bobs attached, with much of the engine these days being alloy, they tend to get white deposits all over them ? Read more
My local Honda dealer in the NE rang me the other day about changing my CRV diesel. It seems they are offering a half decent part/ex for mine ( offer seems fair to me) and saying "get the best Internet price for a new CRV and we'll match it". Now I am not stupid but it seems that this is an offer at both ends of the deal, decent part/ex and discount at the top end, mind you the proof in the pudding is whether this translates into a deal (cost to change etc) I know things are supposed to be tight at the moment but am I missing something? Are there problems with the CRV? is there an update due? are they putting the new diesel in the uocoming Accord and then into the CRV later? Are there more dealer bonus's on offer than normal or are they just desperate? They lost my business last time (I stayed with Honda but went to another sales chain) but the whole thing puzzles me! Any backroomer comments would be appreciated Read more
All cars suffer from some problem or other, Honda was on my short list. When car hunting. I wouldn't stop a few negative posts stop me buying one.
I test drove the CRV but didnt think it an improvement on my xtrail.
I also drove the forester diesel and found the engine far superior than both.
But the forester interior was rubbish. And it cost £25k!
I would have bought a Honda just on its dealer reputation, over the poor Nissan dealers.
But Honda would only discount £2k, Nissan £8.5k.
And that was for a 171bhp engine with 266lbft of torque. So i bought another xtrail.
I don't understand why honda would sooner stop production rather than do a little more on the discount side. Although the Honda didn't tick all the boxes i would have had one at the wright price, even with the old engine.
Holding out for the accord dct engine in the CRV could see it a VED band higher?
hi,
i have an astra which seems to have forgotten which key will work !
had the key for this car & my other car ( 1994 cav ) on keyring. the chip for the astra had feel out of key when changing battery for key light. i had attempted to use car without the chip in key ( before noticing it was missing ) & have been told that the immobiliser has been confused because there was an incorrect chip present ( in cav key ).
does anyone know how to get the car to recognise its chip as i don't have the original masterkey??
have tried turning ignition on & off 25+ times , disconnecting battery for 15 mins + & locking/unlocking doors with ignition on but to no avail .
cheers, bic. Read more
I think DD is right - I don't think the system will be permanently confused by the 'wrong' chip. There are no master keys for Vauxhalls either. The system needs programming by the dealer with a TECH 2 to accept the chips in the keys and there are no tricks to get round this. To do this they need the 'Car Pass' with the ECU/immobiliser code. The dealer can get this (at a price - c£10) if you don't have it. If the car doesn't recognise what you believe is the 'correct' chip I agree with DD that it's probably damaged - or the wrong one! Some locksmiths can programme new keys so they are clones of the originals, but this isn't an option here as you've either lost or damaged the 'working' chip. Not sure many have access to the TECH 2 to programme a new key to the car.

Everything was going very well with my Focus until the top of my ABS pump had an electrical melt-down!! I managed to get a salvage Pump with identical markings along with the plug which I carefully crimped onto the loom.
It did not really surprise me that the ABS lights are still on, and its not working.
I took it to a ford garage who tell me that their computer tells them that the module is faulty. This might be the case, but the supplier of the secondhand part are convinced it worked. (they have offered money back, and seem very resonable)
The ford garage dont really want to look further. maybe I need to get the osciliscope out!!
Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram?
will this unit reset itself, or will it need resetting at the garage?
apart from the 4 sensors, what else could be at fault??
since wires were melted (mainly the thick red one), it is quite possible that there are problems elsewhere. Two fuses had blown, so I guess the first thing to confirm is that there is voltage to the unit. Hence a wiring diagram might be my first step.
Any help gratefully received.

The diag plug is the 16-pin one. Maybe the white/black wire?
My wife is still far away from driving of her own (started learning, then stopped, then started again etc. etc.)
She needs to walk appx. 40 minutes everyday to catch a bus. Our home to her office distance is exactly 4 miles.
She is interested in buying a two wheeler (not full scale motor cycle!). I've seen something similar in old Argos catalog for £750. But that model is no longer available.
Could you please suggest some reasonably priced options?
I think one can drive two wheelers with a learner license.

I'll bet thats where you got your "handle" then! - do i get a prize ! ;-)
I am frequently confused by the number of diffrent oils pushed by retailers wanting top dollar for them. I have a 20 year old motorcycle the owners manual of which states that
the oil needed is " 20-40w, 0r 20-50" oil which meet or exceed service SE,SF or SG.
I frequently look for oil that meets this (SE,SF,SG) but can never find it, Can any one throw any light on this ?
Could it be that these grading symbols are now no longer in use ? Read more
Always used car oils with my z650 with no problems when I was on a budget.
Loking toward something Focus / Astra sized.
Should it be 1.4 or 1.6?
Should it be a Focus or an Astra? (or a Ceed or an i30?)
Either '07' or '57', with less than 10K miles.
As they used to say in exam questions..... Discuss! Read more
Thanks for the comments so far, guys. Please keep them coming.
I'm thinking I'll trade my '05' Mondeo TDCi in for a new-ish car for my wife - she is presently driving an '02' plate Punto, and then buy something 'interesting' for myself - fancy a bit of upmarket bangeromics (if that's not an oxymoron!).
Need some advice please. Bought this car from a major retailer 5 weeks ago. Horrified to find rust on the sills when giving the car a thorough wash yesterday.
Took it to VW for assessment under warranty and by checking the paint thickness they were able to tell me the car had had paint repairs down the near side and it was very thin on the sill where the rust is.
Further, despite a VW history the car was not repaired in the VW system and therefore the paint warranty is invalid.
To me the car is not on satisfactory quality as covered by the Sale of Goods Act. Question is can I reject it and claim a refund .
The car was registered in Dec 04 and has 33K.
Any advice welcome.

Thanks for the comments -some more helpful than others. The reason it was difficult to spot is its quite low down on the sill and where I live the roads have been so muddy that's what I thought it was.
Still think most reasonable people would expect a 3 year old galvanised car to be free of rust.

Yesterday, I had to travel 2 miles thru a single lane farm track! The shoulders were so high that it wasn't possible for moving side wise to allow another vehicle to pass.
Luckily, I passed without any oncoming vehicle.
But what is the usual rule for traveling thru these roads? (I usually never go in there - but incidentally I had to go).

Damn Welsh B roads!!
I can assure you some of the \"A\" roads ain\'t much better! ;-)
I was browsing the owner's manual for the new Mondeo (like you do), and came across the fuel recommendations.
It was surprisingly open, saying that any diesel that meets the EN590 standard is fine. Also 5% biodiesel is fine too.
I would have thought after all the hoo-ha from dealers about "quality fuels" for the latest-generation common-rail motors, the manual would be more specific than that. Read more
I'm pretty sure (but cannot check any longer) but my previous 53 plate Euro IV Mondeo TDCi had biodiesel was a big no-no. Might have changed on later cars.
