Any advice on dealing with this problem would be very welcome.
1. At start up each morning the engine gives off a large amount of exhaust fumes- its not just clearing condensation but is a lot of unburnt fuel. After a minute this clears. The engine then runs smoothly though there is a fairly sharpp jeky respose to the accelerator.
2. The main problem is after this initial running of the engine restarting is difficult and the engine has to be rested for a few minutes after each firing up to get it to restart. No accelerator is used so it is not normal flooding. The restarting problem repeats throughout the day.
3. The car had a full service 2 months ago and once restarted runs normally with good pulling power. There is a good spark.
4. The AA mechanic thought it might be a sticking fuel injector, I've added 2 lots of fuel cleaner to the tank at inervals over the last 5-6 weeks witout seeing any improvement in restarting,

Grateful for any advice.

I currently have a Nokia 6230 which pairs with my TT 710 for everything except the phone directory. (ie it can send/receive text and have handsfree calling but won't be able to pick up the phone directory from the phone).
I am now thinking of changing my phone but unfortunately none of my possible phones are listed on the TT website. Anyone got any of these phones and have been able to pair with the TT?
Nokia N81
Nokia 6500 slide
Samsung G600
Sony K850i
Sony W910i
Sony W580i
Any advice would be appreciated.

Just checked that site !! How many different forums do they have? Where am I supposed to post my query?
Think I might be better taking my TT unit into a phone shop and seeing if they can try the different phones to see which pair with it!

With my badly damaged right knee and a bone structure on my left leg that makes a shepherds crook look arrow straight the top priority for me when buying a car is seat comfort and front leg room. I've been driving petrol Volvo automatics for a number of years; an early XC70 (not for the faint hearted as it was built at 3.55pm on a Friday afternoon just before the summer holiday) and a couple of S80's. These have served me well and would no doubt continue to do so were it not for the fact that my commute has now increased from 14 miles a day to at least 44 and my fuel bill has unsurprisingly rocketed. I've had to put my environmental concerns as second to my need to be able to drive a car that does not cripple me and see me in hospital for the third knee op I'm desperately trying to avoid.
So, having spent ages in the shadows reading the advice offered to those who come here seeking guidance it is now my turn to counsel opinion. I'm seeking a car that is comfortable with excellent front seats and leg room, reliable (I live in a rural area with no sign of a bus service and the two faults that stopped my previous S80 in it's tracks - ETM and ECU - could easily strike again), economical and, with an automatic transmission. Budget? I could stretch to £10K but would prefer to part with about half of that if possible.
Apologies for the life story but I thought some background information would explain why I am where I am and why I seek what I seek.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Read more
>Mazda 5 seats are no good for tall people.
Curious - I'm 6'5" and felt I fitted OK, even if I had to use all the rearward travel, which I don't even in our Fabia. (But then my 'test drive' amounted to a ten-minute run round the block with a salesman who seemed more interested in showing off his ability to drive too fast than in actually letting me try the car for myself. Complete waste of time.)
A better bet might be the tremendously likeable and well-sorted Toyota Verso. I'd buy one if it were six inches longer at the back - it doesn't really work for us as a seven-seater or a load carrier - but if those concerns are secondary or irrelevant to you, have a look. (Toyota dealers, round my Midland parts anyway, also have a far more enlightened attitude to proper test drives.) You can have an automatic if you don't mind petrol.
As for that third knee op, don't do it! It can be hard enough finding room for two knees.

The fan speed is controlled by a 4 position rotary switch - very inacessible and has died. I have the connector off the back with 4 cables. White/grey black blue and green(?). White has power on it.
Anyone help with how to get me home ? It's raining hard and the windscreen steams up.
White to blue - speed 1 , white to green - speed 2 , white to black - speed 3 ??

Looking at a truly terrible diagram in a "Lyndsay Porter" 6 car book - it shows the wiring, but not the colours inside the blower unit, only external wire colours.
I don't think they intended you to delve there.
However, if you have the 4 wires off the fan switch it should cause no harm to dab the power on to each of the other three wires in turn - that's all the switch would do. One of the wires is direct to the motor - for maximum speed (the other two are via dropper resistors for the slower speeds).
If there is no joy, the motor is open circuit, or has lost its earth connection - the earth being a black wire going GOK where.
One are the things to do/watch out for?
car is a write off and 25 miles from home. Towed by AA to residential kurb side. Still 4 months tax so no problem about leaving it on the side of the road.

Can't see how you are insured for a mechanical failure such as the cambelt? Might be worth checking if there's a good engine nearby you could drop in, but sound like you've just got to have it towed away, and buy another.
What does your company give per mile for using your own vehicle on company businees?
Seems to me the rate is 40 pence / per mile which has not changed in some time. With the price of petrol rising should the rate not increase too? Read more
which means that your 50% private motoring only costs you £1 500.
That is one way of looking at it, but doing 20K/yr will soon destroy the value of most cars in depreciation terms, and it can be quite hard on the car itself in terms of extra repairs etc.
Spikeyhead says he has contacts that can get him good cars, and if you can buy 2-3 yr old cars with low mileage, run them for a couple of years then sell with average mileage, then maybe it can work out. But most people haven't got the time, skills, or inclination to do that.
Mrs BP is a Civil Servant and used to have to go out visiting people, but most calls were nearer home that her office, so she had to have business insurance, but she could rarely claim business mileage! Bizarrely, even though she didn't get the mileage paid, the journeys do still qualify for tax relief.
Hi all again !
Type-R is out of question as I wont have fuel card, just 17p a mile.
done my insurance quote of a 330d bmw at 515 a year. thats £41 a month.
RFL is 200 a year thats £16 a month, so say £60 a month for them two.
so got £300 a month, thats about £6000 finance over two years.
so the only choices to me are (and company stipulate it has to be under 4 years old and 60K miles or less)
peugeot 407 saloon/hatch/estate hdi -£7K
honda accord 2.2 cdti. -£6500
would love bmw 330d - 4 door m sport - but £12K !
MB 53 plate C200 - £8K (but 100K miles)(I know a man and a computer tho!)
really would like a barge type of car but good torque when i need it.
not going to make much out of fuel at 17p per mile, with diesel going toward 105p a litre!
and heated leather seats / cruise would be a bonus.
I just am not going to be looking at laguna, as I have had a few, and they were always breaking down.
or do I go medium and could get seat leon 150tdi cupra for around £7K but will it be comfy on 40K miles of driving a year?
not alfa/skoda/passat/
sometimes I think its eaiser having a company car :o)
look forward to any replies....

If the calculations are getting a bit complex you could do worse than visit this page:

One or two of the calculations are out of date, but the mileage allowance and car benefit calculators work just fine.
I am just starting to introduce small amounts of "biodiesel" (retail quality recycled chip fat - not DIY) and want to keep an eye on the fuel filter (as I understand due to increased solvent capabillities of biodiesel I may need to change it after a few K) before I start putting it in greater quantities, hence 2 questions
1) Has anyone had any problems with running on biodiesel that I should look out for
2) Where is fuel filter and is it easy to access with limited tools
thanks Read more
I wouldn't use it in any derv engine in the Vectra, it states in my 2.0dti handbook to not use biodiesel as it can harm the pump.
Hi,
Can anyone give me an idea of what might be wrong..
The idle speed on my 1998 Peugeot 1.6LX EST is usually around 800rpm but occasionally gets stuck at anywhere between 1500 and 2500 (often when cold, but also when warmed up). Today it started going up and down wildly until it dropped so low the engine stopped. After getting it started again and driving a few miles, the 'diagnostics' lamp came on for 2 minutes and then went off, but now I've noticed that at between 40-70mph, the car is sluggish to accelerate and (forgive very untechnical term) starts chugging a bit.
I'm wondering whether these are classic symptoms of something.. and how much my bank balance will soon be dropping by!
Thanks for any pointers...
Cheers

"Cleaning the ignition components?" That's a good trick. I cannot even think of what they could clean. Coilpack with extensions and plugs - that's about the limit of the whole ignition system.
Unless the plugs were loose, then there was nothing to get dirty - did they maybe change the plugs? Or remove the crank sensor? Did they read and clear the codes?
Hi,
Can anybody advise on a problem with my wife's Citroen C5 HDi 110 estate (2003). She unlocked it with the remote control, first thing in the morning, and although the doors were all open, the tailgate (not the window glass) remained resolutely locked.
She locked and unlocked the car a number of times and it still didn't open. Finally she put the key in the ignition (I think she may have turned the ignition on and off) and then when she tried the tailgate again it was unlocked.

Okay, thanks for that. If it's not the wiring, could it be related to the automatic boot locking function and is this controlled by a single computer, the also auto wipers, lights and trip computer.

Thanks again,will do.
