IIRC HM the Queen does not have a passport or a driving licence. Nor do her cars have registration plates. Is this a privilege exclusive to the reigning monarch? Did HM take driving lessons and get a licence at some point then stop having a licence on ascending to the throne? Does this mean Prince Charles will be able to dispense with such formalities when he becomes King?
I know that foreign diplomats get a free licence swap without the need to do a test. Then there's the matter of unpaid parking and speeding fines, congestion charge, etc...
Not royal-bashing here, just curious. Read more

>>Edinburgh does not have a Lord Mayor - indeed, no Scottish town or city has one. The head of Edinburgh is the Lord Provost.

OK, OK, I stand corrected, but I was right about the S 0!

Lord Provost, Mayor, Lord Mayor - well they are all suits in gold chains!

I have a T reg 406 2.0 petrol estate (facelift model) which runs fine when cold but as the engine warms up to temperature the car has an intermittent judder or hesitation when driving. It almost feels like a missfire or momentary loss of power and seems to happen completely at random. It only seems to occur at lower revs and when the engine is hot and everything else with the car appears to work fine. The fuel economy is also bad, which i suspect may be linked to the problem. Im thinking its a fauly sensor or bad connection but dont know where to start looking! Help.. Read more

Possible; maybe a 20% chance - but it could be a lot of other parts too and a MAF will cost a lot more [forget the fakes on flea-bay] than getting your local garage to read the codes.

Has anyone got any ideas on these - the first is the brake light bulb warning light is on most of the time although occasionally it decides to go off and on many times with bleeper for a week or so before settling down again to being on all the time. Long standing problem - I've replaced all the bulbs, brightened up all the contacts, the lights and the LCD on the rear window all work normally. All other dash warning functions work normally.
Next recent problem is the red warning light on the driver's door, the lights on buzzer, and the under the dash interior light fail to come on when the door is opened but strangely the main interior light works normally and comes on when the door is opened. All lights and the door open warning gong on the passenger side work normally. Can't find any fuse problems. Any ideas greatly appreciated as these faults don't justify paying out lots of money to fix.

Sorry about that. (now added)

I bought a 2nd hand car from a repairer 3 months ago and I was told that the car was serviced and I was given a receipt indicating what was done and how much it cost. Now it seems to be suffering from a couple of problems. First the car judders (vibrates when switched on) , then when you shift to first gear and try to drive the car with the handbrake up the car moves, now the heater dont work and everytime I top up with coolant it doesnt seem to fill the container but I dont see any water leaking from under the car and plus there is also a cranking noise like metal shaking the noise comes and goes but Im worried. I bought the car for £700 and exchanged my vauxhall corsa 1993 k reg with 49,000 mileage.

What are my right? If I have any. And are the problems on my car serious? SOMEONE HELP!

The problem we have is that the car was purchased for £700,I doubt whether you would get a refund or a free repair. I think the most you can expect is a contribution to the cost of repairing it. Could you specify the "cost to change" and the actual mileage and age of the car?

If I may just add one more reply to the earlier thread about the 'idiot' truck driver blocking traffic in the outside lane on the A1(M) on the approach to an accident scene:

If the lorry was stationary, isn't it possible it was broken down? It might have been in the tailback earlier, stopped and then been unable to restart. Parking brake stuck on? Half-shaft snapped? Gear linkage broken? Clutch gone? These things happen. I've come across several cases of vehicles broken down in lanes 2 or 3 of motorways including a Cadillac! Read more

Currently looking at a 1994 2.5 diesel auto saloon (cant remember the class, think its a 190, should have taken note!) The vehicle is in mint condition, full leather interior etc, has only done 112K and drives superbly (having taken it for a test drive). Its not that lively, given it is not turbo charged, but it seems to go well. What's your thoughts on this, is there anything I need to look out for, would it be a good solid purchase to see me though a few years? What kind of economy can I expect? The dealer is asking £2,500 although the car does have the full AMG body kit also.

Any comments/advice very welcome.

>>Wasn't aware there were any 190 estates

No, you're right, but as gordonbennet says above, they really are similar cars to W124s. The W124 estates to command a bit of a premium on price.

Being compleely biased, I also agree with gb's view about the multi-valve diesels. We paid £3,000 for ours, with 125,000 on the clock (not that that matters hugely - condition is **much** more important)

I was following a C4 home tonight through the town and noticed that it had 2 white lights shining back at me. These caught my eye and it was only when I signalled that I realised it was a reflection of my own headlights. I thought it was 2 white lights on the dash shining towards the rear!

Very strange indeed, must be due to that bottom bit of a C4 rear windscreen being perfectly at right angles to road and also low enough to reflect straight back!

We have an Aygo - essentially the same car and IIRC it has a 38Ah battery. A larger tray is fitted as the diesels have a 55Ah battery.
