The new Mondeo seems a great car but.... Five years down the line will it be starting with rust and will a clutch change be an expensive job as in the MKIII?

I've got 2 MK3's.

1 is an 02 plate, and had rusty rear doors, but to be honest does it matter? Not a lot - new doors fitted, no questions asked. Thats with no bodywork stamps and only 2 ford services.

I find the interiors much better than the MK1/MK2's (owned a MK1 for some time), the interior of the ST220 is very nice, and both cars are more rattlefree at 4 and 5yrs respectively than my E39 540 was at the same age.

I've seen sludge blocked oil pick-ups and the plug come out of the back of
the filter mounting on these.

This is a reasonably well known problem on the VaG 1.8T engine, if oil changes in the past were less than frequent, and less than high quality oils have been used. Im afraid the prognosis isn't good, and is probably - new engine really.

Hi all, I'm changing the head gasket on my girlfriends 106 diesel(TUD5). Do I need to use the SEEM tensioning device or can I get away with doing it by hand? Where and how much is the SEEM device? Any help is gratefully appreciated. Thanks

"Nobody" has a SEEM tensioning device. The method is to fully peg the engine and tension the belt using the square hole in the eccentric idler (door handle square bar fits it) with the three vernier adjustment bolts on the cam wheel and pump wheel slackened. This is important so that there is no locked-in torque acting on the belt whilst it is being tensioned, whilst allowing the pump and cam timing to be precisely set. It's a very good design.

Change the water pump if you are in the slighteset doubt as to its condition - this is easily the weakest link in the timing drive.

As far as setting the tension is concerned, with a cold engine aim for an almost 45 degree twist in the run between the pump and cam wheels. This is pretty tight and is how this belt needs to be set. Ensure the nut locking the eccentric adjuster is fully - but not over - tight.

Best of luck with that damned bolt on the centre plastic cover.

i have a 2000 w reg tdi s, passat.
after leaving the car stand for a week, i went to start it but the battery was dead.
i wnet to jump start it, but the ignition would not recognise my key, so i was advised to leave the ignition on and let the imobiliser reset to my key. after a bout 10 mins it did and it started. i let the car charge itself up for approx 1 hour then drove it with no problems. i then stopped the car and tried to start it again, but the battery again was completely dead, so again i jump started it, but this time the key would not work in the ignition even after trying to reset it, and a coil shape lit up on the dash. The battery is dead but as soon as i connect it to another car there is power going to the car, all the lights appear but the key ignition light flashes for about 10 minute and also this coil light, the battery goes completely dead again in about 2 mins, help!!!!!!!!

the glowplug light is the EML if it's flashing. It occupies the same position on the cluster as the EML on petrol cars.

Statistical outlier

The other day, while in DIY hell, I had to do several short (2 mile) runs from cold. On the 3rd of 4, the car didn't feel like it was pulling properly. Then, on a roundabout just before the end of the journey, it didn't pull at all off the roundabout. 2k rpm in 2nd and pretty much nothing.

On the way back it was absolutely fine. It's been absolutely fine since, pulls like a train. Anybody have any ideas what the problem might have been? Should I worry, given there's 35k miles left on the warranty? Read more

With the new KA arriving later this year, built in a Fiat plant, there seems an opportunity for this model to be galvanised like its Fiat 500 sibling.

That said, the body panels look totally different. Any evidence that the `rustproofing` characteristics of the outgoing model will be followed along perhaps with a lower price? Read more

looking to buy a car for my wife who has leg trouble getting in and out of our current car Toyota Carina E.

getting into the car is a problem currently as is a little too high but we find that getting out again is hard if the car is too low down !!

someone suggested a Scenic - any thoughts?

so any ideas on the ideal height car - my budget is £1500 - £2000.

Go to a car supermarket to try many suitable cars. You don't need to buy it there but that's where you are likely to see many marques/models together.
