I have had my Mazda6 2.0 diesel since late October. This week I let the fuel run lower than usual before re-filling (waiting for my fuel card but that's another story)...

... so it had got down to below a quarter of a tank with the "miles remaining" readout heading to single digits. All fine but the fuel warning light had not come on. Decided to see how low it really got and fitted almost 54 litres in. The tank is meant to be 64 litres so I had just over 10 litres left...

Does this sound right? Miles remaining basically saying the car was very nearly empty but the fuel warning light had not come on. And if I had 10 litres left I could have gone a lot further... like maybe 100 miles! Which would have meant well over 500 miles from a tankful with a fair bit of round time driving too...

I'm wondering what the "miles remaining" reading would have done now when it reached zero. At least I know the fuel gauge is more accurate than the pessimistic digital readout. Didn't want to risk it this time first time not knowing which was lying.

Anyone else seen Mazda's fuel gauges and estimated miles remaining behave like this?

Cheers

Rob

I only work out mpg by brimming the tank - the readouts are nowhere near accurate. They usually are optimistic. But today the miles remaining was saying 6 with 10 litres left... I would not trust this for sure and with this being a new car I did take it's word in case the fuel gauge and missing warning light were the problem.

Sorry - your postings were shifted about a bit whilst IHAQ 213 was being built in the shed outside. JBJ's response to Cheddar's camera question has now been tacked onto the thread within 212 and therefore runs logically. I hid the Bank Branch question under the stairs for a while and then took it out, dusted it off and put it into Vol 213 once the paint had dried on it. It all took some time 'cos I lost the glue pot - your posts weren't deleted or changed in anyway just stuck to my fingers for a while !

bostin's reply to the planning question in 212 has now been successfully migrated into proper sequence.

HI there, my Escort seems to have a few electric problems and I was wondering if anyone can help...

1. Sometimes when I unlock the door (either from inside or out) the locks keep locking and unlocking constantly until the door has been shut again!

2. Sometimes when I stop the car and open the door the alarm goes off!

3. Sometimes the speedo just decides not to work at all and then later comes back to life again!

4. The temp gague just doesn't move at all.

Any ideas on how I can fix any of these or is it something only a garage can do?

Thanks x Read more

It is an R reg, ford Escort - petrol - 1.6 18v

{I'm guessing the 18v is as typo, and you actually meant 16v?}

Does anyone know if blue side lights are illegal would the car fail an mot for this. all other headlights main and dipped are white. Read more

It depends what you mean by blue. If they really do look blue like a police strobe, they are illegal, if they have a blue filter to correct the amber of an incandescent bulb, that's OK.

The Jobsworth at a well known insurance co. wants my last two years tax returns in order to justify my charge for two hours of time in the accident that their insured caused....

What has it got to do with them what I earned for the last two years, I wonder, or how many hours I worked to earn it? Has anyone had a similar request from another insurer?

Insurance companies are good at sniffing out the BS and fairytales. I can demonstrate what I earn and my hourly rate pretty easy - if you want the money then probably best to send them the info.

I went to local Mazda dealer on Saturday to buy the cambelt for my Mazda 323 2.0TD and the chap in the parts department told me its £70+ incl. VAT. He was as shocked as I was when he told me the price. I confirmed with him if its just the cambelt or its the whole kit. He told me its just the cambelt. Would you guys pay such a price for a belt? Is there any other place which could sell good quality cam belt for this engine? I don't mind paying around £40 but to be honest £70+ for a cam belt is quite expensive I guess! Read more

I was charged £600 for a 54k (major) service and new cambelt on my 323TD by main dealer. It wasn't itemised so I can't tell how much the belt was. I balked at the total cost but take comfort from the fact that 30k of trouble-free motoring since makes it a safe investment for me as I intend to keep it for a few years to come.

The only disapointment are the rusting rear wheel arches (inside and out) qhich other 323 owners have complained about through HJ

Hi, hope someone out there can help me.

I bought a 2001 VW Golf, 1.6 petrol about 1 month ago from a dealer.

From cold, car starts fine, runs fine, but if I stop at a garage, say after 30 mins driving (temp guage is in normal range) then the car wont start again. I can get it to start by putting throttle down full and craking until it does start, but it takes a while!

In my very limited knowledge I am guessing it has something to do with the Mass Air Flow sensor, trouble is the garage are telling me they will charge me £80 to put it on the diagnosis machine because sensors, apparently arent covered by their standard warranty.

Is there anytihng I can try myself to determine if it is this sensor?

Chaps, It's me again!

My 306 D turbo 1997 offside electric window has not worked since I bought it a couple of months ago. I have removed the switch, dismantled it and cleaned it but still no activity.
I'm assuming that there must be a loose wire because the nearside window works fine which rules out there being a motor failure. My question is, is this a common fault and where is the best place to start looking.

I was lead to believe that one motor supplied power to both windows. Obviously not the case after looking at the replies! Electrics are not my strong point (can you tell!!).
