Renault - 2002 RX4 Gearbox trouble

2002 RX4 Gearbox trouble - stuartl
A good friend of mine has a 2002 Renault RX4 which has lost it's fifth gear.

Here is what he described in an email to me, incidentally he lives in Spain but frequently returns to the uk.

"As for problem, it just vibrates and makes a noise when I put it into
5th gear but no other gear is affected and it drives quite normally in
all the others. The garage tried to explain what was wrong (remember
this is in Spanish) and I got the impression it was something to do
with splines, or pins or lugs sheared off (something on one bit that
should mesh with another bit) and the solution is an exchange gear box.

I have been looking at a Renault forum for some while and it seems
that this is not an unusual problem but when the guys discuss it, they
talk about changing some of the greasy bits which is way beyond my
abilities although it would save the garage labour costs.

One additional problem is that the gearbox was supposedly fixed
earlier this year by a non Renault garage and they obviously made a
right hash of it. I can't see that I have any real claim against
Renault this time, although it should never have happened in March to a
5 year old car. A properly made gearbox should last longer than 5
years."


Any ideas at all please??
