Hi all,

Please help and confirm my problem.

My Pug 406, is a strange beast at the best of times, but yesterday the battery charge light came on whilst driving, albeit a bit dim and almost flickering, as I drove home i noticed my lights seemed to be getting dimmer and dimmer, the cd stopped working, then indicators gave up the ghost, the anti lock braking light came on, the steering started to get heavier and the air bag light came on as well. Finally on low revs the car was spluttering a bit, but JUST managed to get the thing home.

1st thought was battery, and as I haven't had a new battery for years I didn't mind replaing it. On checking it, it did seem low on fluid, so guessed the cells were knackered. Bought a new battery and obviously everything worked sweet again, HOWEVER that darn battery charge light is still on, still a very dim/flickering (on high revs) but much brighter and constant on tick over. I was guessing/hoping that maybe cuz i put a new battery on it wasn't quite up to full charge and will right itself in due coarse.

What d'ya reckon you clever people out there??? is this an alternator fault? Have I needlessly wasted (a lot of) money on a new battery?

Please help else I'm gonna be in the same boat I was in last night.

Many thanks in advance for any replies

{No mention of age of car, so picked up from drop down menu for now}

There was a service fix on Escorts in the 90's on this very subject;on the one I owned I never had any battery problems but the warning light would glow faintly in the dark. The fix was to change the connector to a different type-they did it on mine-no further problems.

bmw woman

Hi all,

I bought the above a year and a half ago - and other than having to replace a battery up until the summer this year its been fine.

Now I know summer would make more of a demand on my air con, and at same time I got a stereo fitted at Halfords where I know they did make a bit of a meal out of it - and despite them faffing on, and fitting a new aerial wire thingy (technical term?) my radio stopped working where reception was fine before.

Since then I've had allsorts of electrical problems - my heater control panel is possessed - it is either dead to the world, pumping out heat in the dead of summer, or throwing "snow" and freezing cold. The panel itself lights up and then switches off as it pleases.

That was first thing I noticed. Then my radio (well actually - more of a CD player seeing as I've never been able to use radio function) started playing dead too - no amount of banging or jiggling could sort it - but then all of a sudden after a fortnight of not working the CD would pop out and it would work fine again.

Then the bulbs in my car seemed to be going left right and centre - by now I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with the thing. And then my entire dash stops lighting up and thats it - no more diy bulb replacements and it goes to a bmw dealer.

£152 later, they say 10 wires had chafed in the boot - they'd replaced them and the popped bulbs, and all was working fine EXCEPT I need a heater control panel - which is £360 for the part.

I've tried looking on ebay for the part and notice a lot of people offering a "send in and we'll repair" service - which to be honest I'm a bit worried about doing. Its just the idea of sending a part of my car off to some anonymous person and never seeing it again!

But makes me think well if theres so many people offering this repair service is this a regular fault? Does it cost everyone £360 for just the part without the labour? Or should I try find a back street garage who could do the job for cheaper?

My car isn't the newest in the world - but other than this fault I've been quite happy with it and I was hoping to keep it and enjoy relatively low cost motoring for some years to come (is that a contradiction in terms?).

Anyway - since the first quote of £360 the electrical problem with radio and headlights seems to have come back? Any ideas anyone so I can go into my dealer/local garage with a bit more of an idea of what I need fixing?

Thanks guys :) Read more

Hi, your radio/headlight probs can easily be sorted via a local auto electrician, try yell.com. Mine turned out to be a bad earth under the bonnet that I sorted myself.(took all of 10 mins) The climate control is a completely seperate concern and there are only two options open to you. Let BMW replace it or have it repaired BUT be careful. The fault you are experiencing is caused by a tiny capacitor inside. Some people will charge you the earth £150+ just to replace it ( off the vehicle) Trouble is, unless the induction fan is replaced it will not last. ( I know, I made the same mistake!!) I finally found a guy down here in rainy cornwall who done the complete thing top to bottom for £95 +p&p.
The unit itself is extremely easy to remove so best of luck!!

There is a letter in the HJ column in Saturday's Daily Telegtaph warning buyers off CVT automatic gearboxes (presumably as opposed to torque converter gearboxes).

Is there a list anywhere which shows which cars have CVT boxes?

Is that the same thing as a magnetic clutch? Read more

retgwte

CVT belts often snap on relatively young cars making even a brand new box economic

one car they even suggested changing the pedals and putting a manual box in, as it would then become a much more viable car!

I read that the next Jazz has a "new" 1300cc Vtec engine.
Does anyone know if it will still have the completely daft tappet adjustment, whereby, at the third service, the inlet manifold has to be removed, at great expense, to check valve clearances, and then to shim if necessary?
I recently paid ca £573 for this service, which also included new front and rear brake pads.
I have had my Jazz CVT for just over 3 years, and it has been faultlessly reliable.
The gearbox is completely smooth in operation.
The practicality of the folding seats is unmatched.I use the facility frequently.
However, servicing at the dealer is expensive.
The valve clearance job is probably for specialists with small hands and many joints.
And finally, why is there no intermittent rear wipe, except on the Sport version?
Penny-pinching on what is a premium-priced supermini. If Daihatsu can include this on all the Sirions (cheaper cars) why can't Honda?

Neither the Jazz 1.2 or 1.4 engines have VTEC valve timing. I too am not sure why hydraulic tappets weren't used in these engines.

i am trying to remove my car battery to replace it, however everytime i try to do so, the alarm goes of. i was wondering if anyone knows how to completely disarm the vauxhall 901 system alarm? Read more

If you want to charge the battery then just charge it on the car at a low setting and leave everything connected.

Why do you want to charge the battery though? If it was flat then surely the alarm would be already going off on its own, otherwise disconnecting the battery terminals would have no effect on it.

PoloGirl

Apologies for the stupid question, but I've forgotten.

My two front tyres could do with replacing before the winter really kicks in. The car's done around 25k and the only other new tyre it's had was a driver's side rear back in April due to a puncture (the bloke in the tyre place had a hard enough job persuading the lease company to replace it, let alone replace both rears to make a matching set in terms of wear - they've got the same pattern).

Bearing that in mind, do I still ask them to put the rears on the front and the new tyres on the rear, or just take the new ones on the front and leave the rears?

Or have I got completely confused?

I have just purchased a 2003 vw passat tdi 110 5 speed manual. I think the engine is AGW , but cant be sure at the moment. Gearbox is the one you dont have to push down for reverse.

The car drives and handles great , ive always wanted one and finaly came up with the cash , when i drove the car home it was warm and was ok but i noticed the gear change was a little notchy.......common maybe for this model.....i thought. the rest of it is ok so i,ll live with it.#

Next day from cold it was very difficult going int gear but after only a few miles its ok again. the strange thing is ,occasionally its perfect.

i,m worried about damaging it when its cold so I want it fixed , i don't think its terminal as the car has only done 47000 miles certified...........any ideas I have my own but i,m no vw specialist

gear oil gone thick ?
linkage ?

Flycog

Yep Dual mass flywheel to reduce vibrations and shock between engine and transmission. The down side is they seem to give alot of trouble in all cars they are fitted to. One of the symptoms on our Golf TdI was clutch drag, if it wont go in reverse gear without crunching thats a good sign its the DMF. The surface is prone to distorting with raised areas also the bushes holding the thing together wears causing starter motor failure on Mondeos. It is recommended you change the DMF flywheel as routine on a clutch change. They are expensive from £250 to alot. I repaired cars for twenty years and never changed a flywheel, now is that Progress.

Anyone have any knowledge of these??. My car is an 05 model.
To try and cut a long story short. My car has a plastic rod that runs between the lock in the grill and the release mechanism. It appears self adjusting and spring loaded although mine does not have a spring.
The rod keeps dropping off at the grill end. Making bonnet opening very difficult!!
Have been to the dealership for a replacement and all they can find after inputing my reg no into the parts system is a kit which has a short cable between the lock and release mechanism. It is clearly different and shoulders are being shrugged. I even ordered the kit just in case the picture was not realistic. Completely different. I had to get the 'saturday' parts lady to have a word with the technicians but that did not produce any positive results. It really is frustrating as it must be a common problem.
Does anyone know if the part has been has been modified? If so does the new kit fit what appears to be an old system.

Here is a picture I have found of the kit I was offered:

Our 53 Megane decided to die on us the other night. The dashboard told us it was an electrical fault and we noticed that the immobiliser wasn't going off when we unlocked it. It is now at a Renault garage and they have informed us that water has leaked in to the engine and corroded the central engine unit. If they can mend it easily it will only cost £400 but it may need completely re-wiring which would cost thousands.

We have noticed that this water leak and electrical fault is mentioned on Honest Johns 'whats not good' review.

Has anyone else come across this problem - does anyone have any advice to get garages to fix this without huge cost of our part as it sounds like a factory fault.

All advice gratefully received.

Are you sure they don't mean the fuse box? Have heard other owners having this problem, although don't know how common it is.

mildew

Hi, hope someone can help with this problem.
The blower in my laguna II 2002 1.6l is zoned for driver side and passanger. the driver side stopped heating last week but the other side works fine. I dont think its the A/C unit, as this works normally on the passanger side also. The fans still work (although a bit slow to start up).
Hopefully someone out there could help PLEASE!!!!! I dont want to take it to a garage incase its something I could fix myself.. Read more

Sorry people, I have been away for a while!
Yes I got the problem solved if somewhat by sheer luck. The battery needed replacing on the car, so I went to a motor factors, bought a new one and fitted it myself. Turned the car on and Hey Presto!! the heater worked again. I can only guess that thwere wasnt enough power in the battery to power all of the heating system.
