I have a 2002 Focus 1.6 Ghia. Sometimes, but not always, after you turn the ignition right off the fuel gauge moves (normally very rapidly) from zero to about 2 oclock (regardless of the quantity of fuel in the tank). At the same time the temperature gauge moves to a (more realistic) position.
Is this an electrical problem, eg water in the ECU? I'd very much appreciate help. The car is operating normally - so far.

I was wondering why it seems that the Audi A4 with the 2.0 TDI 140 engine is so much more thirsty than other VAG cars with the same engine ? My car has now done 10.5K miles and compared to my old TDI 130 the fuel consumptions is still fairly unexciting. I get 44-45 MPG on a motorway run if I'm really gentle, whereas the old TDI 130 on the same journeys would do 50-52 mpg. The thing that seems strange to me is talking to A3 and Passat drivers with the same engine, they seem to have never had issues with fuel consumption. My cars MPG was awful until I had done at least 6K miles.
How does everyone else get on with their VAG 2.0 TDI motor ? Read more
Returned earlier today from a 400 mile trip to Worcestershire/Shropshire border country from Yorkshire - steady journey to Ironbridge on the way using M1, A38 then A5 cross country followed by A and B roads to south of Ludlow. Motorway all the way back. I've just filled up again and it took 38 litres - 47.789 mpg.
My wife has just got a new shape TDCi 130 Mondeo. Twice now it has lost power whilst she has been driving. Power goes for a couple of seconds, she dips the clutch and then lifts it and it starts. The phone drops the bluetooth connection suggesting an electrical power cut as well. Not sure if the electrics are cutting the engine or the other way round. I have searched the net and found a lot of people with power loss problems on TDCI 130 but all older cars. Is this the same engines in the new model? Has anyone else come across this? We are waiting for a dealer to look at it but I want to know if it is a bigger problem. If this happens on a bend or at speed then it could be deadly as the steering and brakes go as well. I know you can still use them but they are very hard and if you are not prepared then it could cause a crash. Read more
hi hp4020,
i'm glad to hear that it now seems ford have admited problem instead of blaming driver, fuel, etc and now seem to have sorted it....hopefully.
i am awaiting delivery of another mondeo and i hope that this is the end of the cutting out fault and that i can look forward to many miles of hassle free driving in my mondeo which this problem apart is some car to drive.
SWMBO is going to test drive one tomorrow- any advice on what to look for, ownership experiences?? Read more
Just an update on this -
The car has been purchased - Smart Roadster on a 53 Reg, Blue, Leather seats, FSH and with 12k on the clock. Free MOTS for life, a service and full MOT before we picked it up and a service for free in 6 months time and a two year warranty. Petrol and car mats chucked in as well, bought for £5k which I think was a decent price.
Better still, I am insured on it as well :-D
Hi everyone,
I'm a new user, can anyone help?
I bought a 12 month old VW Golf (on the long-life service plan) about 2 years ago and didn't have any problems until i took it to my local dealer for a service and mot.
The car passed the mot, so no worries there i thought.
Approx 2 weeks later the engine management light came on (now out of warranty) so i booked the car in to be seen. By the time i was due to take the car in, the warning light had gone out and the dealership said don't bother bringing it in as the diagnostics machine won't show any problems.
The same thing happened again 3 weeks later, light on - rang dealer, light off - dealer cancelled booking.
The car is now two months out of warranty and on monday i drove the car to the dealer after the coolant warning light had been on. I noticed coolant under the car on the drive, so i topped it up and drove straight to the dealer without ringing first.
I have now been told the radiator's had it and also the engine management light had been coming on because of a sensor/switch under the accelerator pedal so i need a whole new pedal. How they determined this i don't know because the engine management light wasn't on when i took the car in on monday.
Can someone please advise what to do as it seems strange that i've not had any problems for two years, then i take it to this dealer for the first time for a service and mot and before you know it i'm expected to pay £570 for a car with full vw service history, just out of warranty and less than 17,000 miles on the clock! You drive a Merc and go on about the snob value of a VW, shome mistake surely.
My Passat had her eighth birthday last week, she has passed all 6 MOTs without even an advisory. The only thing to go wrong in this time has been a broken electric window mechanism.
My wife's Golf has been faultless in the 18 months we have had the car.
My dad had several Mercs in his time, you needed a mortgage for a service. I reckon if the Merc costs 30K, it is 25K for the car and 5K for the badge on top of the bonnet, just to remind you that you have "arrived".
When I drove the old man to Heathrow and went into the left lane he told me that Mercs shouldn't go in this lane! This has explained a lot!!
Does anyone have any advice regarding my bonnet lock, its is stuck and will not open. I only have 1 key, the one that operates the central locking etc. Have tried to open with no luck it seems to be jammed shut.

Problem solved.I purchased a new key from Ford,it did not do the trick.I then spent 2 hours trying to solve the problem, don't ask. After trying the new key in all the other locks and finding it fitted none of them i filed a small amount off the front of the key,hey presto.
Many thanks all the same Fullchat
I am driving to down to Innsbruck next week on holiday and seeing as I have all season UK tyres, need snow chains which I believe are mandatory in some resorts.
Has anyone ever used tyre snow socks, and do they work. Plus, do the police over there except them? Read more
Yes as far as I am aware they are TUV approved but as I said nobody will check.
Sorry to bring this back from the dead after so long but I am getting the same issue with my 1996 Citroen Saxo 1.5D which I believe has the same TUD5 engine. An after doing a google search this is the only post I could fine with the same symptoms.
The car starts first time almost in an instant but when driven or reved white smoke comes out of the exhaust, poor idle, hesitation when driven . After about 2-3 mins everything is fine. Only does it when cold! Also the mpg has drop from an average of 50-55mpg down to 40 mpg!
I have replaced the glow plugs, checked the pre and post heat timing and they appear fine. I have also checked the temperature sensor which the post heat timer works off and this gives no resistance reading when cold but when hot I get a reading although can't remember exactly what so I am guessing this is also working fine.
I'm not too familiar with diesel engines and fueling but I take it the white smoke is down to unburnt diesel getting into exhaust manifold and then being ignited there?
I'm now stuck for suggestions so all help welcome.

Just found this (old) thread while considering my own 1.5d TUD5 / Bosch VE Saxo issues.
Considering when he played with the advance, doesn't this sound like a timing issue?...
I am trying to diagnose a missfire fault and I want to disable the fuel pump. Please can some one tell the exact location of the fuel pump fuse?

Thanks Screwloose,
It was fuse 6 in the Maxi fuse box. After checking the sparks and doing a compression test I concluded that the misfire was caused by a faulty coil pack. I swapped the coil pack for a new one and the misfire was cured.
Hi all
Just a quick question. We are selling our car and a chap from Ireland is interested in buying it. He has agreed to pay cash (so I'm not concerned about being ripped off).
However I wondered if anyone knows what I should do about the V5. I want to fill it in and send it off to Swansea, but am wondering if you can give the registered owners details as Ireland. I don't want to give it to him as he may never register it and I'll have all the hassle of dealing with speeding tickets etc. The buyers brother is coming to look at the car tomorrow (and drive it away if he likes it).
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

But the £ is stronger than euro so they cost more to them, does sound rather odd to come that way for a car.
But cars did seem dear when I went over this year, and parts were very dear, with many using the Internet to gets bits from UK, perhaps we should stop grumbling.

I've had a new dash cluster fitted, also recently had a new fuel guage as well, but since the nre fuel guage, we've noticed the fuel guage working differently.
I used to be able to fuel up, full tank, and needle would go over the F marker, but now, it can sometimes take in excess of 6-7 miles driving before the needle gets near to how much fuel is in the tank.
I don't want to take the car to a Ford Dealer, but might run it up to a vehicle electrician to have a look at, but is it a case of changing the fuel guage sensor, if so, is this a big job and a costly one?
