Hi all,
Just come across an insurance issue for an up coming holiday. I'm going away with 3 children and my partner, and so, as much as I love my Polo Saloon, it just isn't big enough in the back for 3 car seats. Therefore, a friend of mine has offered to lend me his bigger car for the trip. The problem I have stumbled across though is - his insurance won't cover me abroad, even as a named driver, unless he comes aswell - which isn't an option - and my insurance won't cover me third party abroad either.
Now, as the car is already insured by him, what would be my options? Do any of you helpful BRs have any suggestions.....we leave on Friday!!! lol

Predatory driving. Any chance of this becoming an offence in the UK?
It does have a nice ring to it :-)
........He has been charged with malicious damage, breaking and entering, using a weapon to avoid arrest, predatory driving, possessing a prohibited drug and driving dangerously.
Certainly well tanked up.

In order to see whether I can (and wish to) still ride, I've just purchased a GPZ600R from ebay. Passed MOT yesterday, so I've ridden a total of 20 miles for the first time in 30 years; so far, so fun (but not yesterday morning when it was raining...)
Quandry is this. Bike is currently showing as TAXED on the DVLA website, with no liability until 01/05/08. Vendor didn't have disc (wasn't on the bike when he bought it); when the new V5 arrives in my name, can I contact DVLA for replacement disc? I know that I'm commiting a technical offence by not displaying, but given I'm insured, it's MOT'd and DVLA says it's taxed, should I ride her?

I don't see the UK classic motor mags and don't see full answers on a Google search, so let's try this query here. Having dismantled a number of vehicles at home over the years to keep others going, it now appears that this may not be permissible under new laws unless I keep the dismantled and effectively non-existent vehicle on a permanent SORN since only licensed scrapyards appear to be able to officially scrap a vehicle. To take an example, I dismantled a Citroen two years ago, sold the bits I didn't need and cut the bodyshell into parts that went to the scrap metal skip in the local council tip. Oils went there for disposal too and the petrol drained from the system into a very old fuel heater. DVLA were notified that I had scrapped it and that was that. Am I right in thinking it's not so easy now? Would a scrapyard take the bodyshell and V5 and officially scrap it for a fee? Read more
If you have the tracking equipment available now, install it in the shell before it goes to the crusher!
After years of reading, my first post ( sorry about the length ). I recently visited France and half way through my trip my three month old 2.5 CRTD 4 x 4 started missing, only perceptable in second gear. It wasn't too detrimental to driving solo or even when the Caravan was attached, so no remedy was sought until I returned to Blighty. Expecting the problem to be covered under warranty I booked in with the dealer only to be dissapointed when I was informed that the problem was due to Petrol contaminating the Diesel prompting the fuel system to be drained, cleaned and filters replaced. I am 100% certain that Petrol was not used by mistake so the only cause of this contamination could have been at a filling station with some petrol contamination within a deisel pump. Would anyone put my mind at rest and confirm the symptoms for this problem are correct as I feel uneasy, and that this sort of contamination can occur ? Read more
Thanks for the replies, I forgot to mention that after the drain down etc, they said if the missing persisted after running for 100 miles or so it could mean a change of an injector. The missing persists, should it have ?
Hi, i'm after some possible causes to a problem I have with my 1995 Subaru Legacy auto estate 2.2 GX.
Yesterday whilst driving the engine cut out several times, petrol was ok, when driving i lost all the revs then a couple of seconds later the engine cut out, I put the gearbox into N, turned the key and away we went again.
I have a suspicion it may be a fuel problem or something to do with the engine management.
I'll probably have to drop it into a garage, but if anyone could pass on some advice i'd be very grateful and i'd also know if the garage is trying to rip me off.

No, I'm not extending the debate on whether it'll do 100k or not. ;o) I just wanna know an approx cost of parts and labour of a Cambelt plus tensioner and pulleys.
I don't want to be ripped off!
Cheers Read more
Whoops! Should have said W reg 1.8l petrol engine.

Waiting at a red light at the top of a slip road tonight. Two lanes, only option is to turn left. I'm in the inside lane and have a new 207 on the outside who is riding the clutch, creeping forward and roling back on the incline.
As you wait you can see the other set of lights, so I watch them and prepare for my set to change, as does Mr Pug. He sees the other set go green-amber-red. The lights are set so as soon as the other set are red our set start their change sequence with no gap between one set going red and our set starting
As soon as the other set has hit red and our sequence has just started the Pug driver moves off a bit sharpish whilst red amber is still showing on our set. Knowing this set of lights (after nearly being hit by a moped who flew through on red) I now always check before moving off and on this occasion I see a white Mitsubishi FTO coming quickly from the right and he isn't stopping. The white car goes straight through the red, by this point I was preparing for the bang and the consequences of the Pug possibly being pushed into my 2 week old motor. Incredibly they missed and the Pug then chased the FTO round a roundabout and away from me!
Thinking this through I would have made an interesting witness statement. Both cars went through a set of lights which wasn't showing green so potentially both at equal fault. Read more
>>You weren't expecting to be paid, I'm sure: the reason you gave a statement was that you wanted justice to be done.
>>
I was not interested in any payment.
I actually gave the same statement three times which took a few hours.
>>If that meant your evidence wasn't required - well, that's how it often goes. Justice (?) was still done.
>>
My evidence "did not support the police case so you can go and claim your expenses! "
I am not sure justice was done. I was not supporting either side but I guess my evidence showed that biker did not obey the highway code and that was inconvenient to the case.
As an independant witness my evidence was both for and against the defendant.
I have a 14 year old Honda CRX (93 model) VTi with 110k miles. It's been great, but as I have an 8 month old baby it's time to get something with a back seat. I fancy a Clio 172 or a Peugot 306 Gti and only want to spend £3-4K max. A couple of garages have said that my car is only worth £500 as trade in (a bit lower than I was expecting), but while mechanically good, the paint is fading (it's red) and there's some minor bodywork blemishes. Am I better to try and shift my Honda privately (£800-£1000?), or just try and trade it in?
On a linked note, I've found a clio 172 with 69k miles, 4 previous owners, a big bore exhaust and a few scratches on the door for £3,495. Will it be dodgier than a 9 bob note, or is it worth considering seriously? I was intending to have the exhaust replaced with a standard item ASAP if I bought the car (or make that a condition of the sale).
Grateful for any help (though comments based on experience rather than just opinion appreciated even more). Read more
Thanks for your advice everybody, very helpful.
What sort of costs are involved for buying a warranty for a car purchased from an Auction.
Are they worth it or take a chance for a car of some 2 or 3yrs old.??
They are worth it if you think the gearbox might spontaneously explode from the inside. In any other case you probably don't have a claim. Unless you fancy paying for a complete strip down and expert opinion.
Check especially if the warranty excludes pre-existing conditions. Most I've seen do. I am amazed dealers try to give you such a warranty, as it seems completely worthless to me.
If you don't get you car serviced correctly of course you are not covered. I guess if the car you bought does not have FSH, you will not be covered. This makes sense, but can also be another grey area.
And don't forget the single claims lime, I've seen some warranties that have a limit of 40 uk pds..!
Auctions are for those who are happy to take risks. It's the same for houses as it is for cars. You best bet is do do whatever inspection/checks before buying and don't overpay. If it goes pear-shaped, be prepared to take it on the chin. Its the difference between running a business and being a consumer. In the former, you expect to have problems, but as a consumer you expect higher standards.
Remember many cars on dealers forecourts are straight from auction. And many dealers won't have done even the most cursory checks. So in that sense you might say you are actually better at an auction as you at least know where you stand.

Thanks for the link to NU - got it with the Europe cover for £60 so not too bad I think....
I did consider the taking the whole years policy and then cancelling, but then should I need to use it, I wouldn't be able to cancel it and I would be a few hundred pounds worse off!
I just can't believe how unhelpful More Than really were - they have to give me an excellent renewal price to keep my business that's for sure!
