'95 Legacy 2.2 auto - Engine cuts out - quidsin

Hi, i'm after some possible causes to a problem I have with my 1995 Subaru Legacy auto estate 2.2 GX.
Yesterday whilst driving the engine cut out several times, petrol was ok, when driving i lost all the revs then a couple of seconds later the engine cut out, I put the gearbox into N, turned the key and away we went again.
I have a suspicion it may be a fuel problem or something to do with the engine management.
I'll probably have to drop it into a garage, but if anyone could pass on some advice i'd be very grateful and i'd also know if the garage is trying to rip me off.
