Scrapping at home - outlawed? - Harmattan
I don't see the UK classic motor mags and don't see full answers on a Google search, so let's try this query here. Having dismantled a number of vehicles at home over the years to keep others going, it now appears that this may not be permissible under new laws unless I keep the dismantled and effectively non-existent vehicle on a permanent SORN since only licensed scrapyards appear to be able to officially scrap a vehicle. To take an example, I dismantled a Citroen two years ago, sold the bits I didn't need and cut the bodyshell into parts that went to the scrap metal skip in the local council tip. Oils went there for disposal too and the petrol drained from the system into a very old fuel heater. DVLA were notified that I had scrapped it and that was that. Am I right in thinking it's not so easy now? Would a scrapyard take the bodyshell and V5 and officially scrap it for a fee?

You can scrap it yourself if you want. The remains can go to a scrapyard (no V5 needed) and they will probably give you some tenners for it.

Sorry for the over-quoting above which I meant to edit but prematurely pressed "post".

Anyway, see: www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/ins160.pdf

If you sorn to eternity you run the risk of not getting the reminder one year forgetting to renew and ending up in the local rag with a £100 fine £25 costs and whatever else they deem necessary.
So until the v5 and the european union rules change again i would suggest you always tick the scrapped box (v5 ) and send back to swansea, you will get confirmation as you are the last registered keeper within 6 weeks that its scrapped,if this letter does not come you must phone swansea otherwise you will end up getting fined.
if log book not in your name then a sticky as you cannot be sure that the new keeper slip was not filled in by previous owner with your details on,in this situation i would take the shell with chassis number intact to an end of life processing plant and make sure i got a destruction certificate, this then nullifies you from all future claims on that vehicle (keep the certificate forever mind)

Of course you will keep a photo copy of all the details sent to Swansea, like I did when I took my old Sierra to a "vehicle dismantler".
At the time I was not aware of the six weeks bit. I got a letter from Swansea ( my docs got lost in the post ?) but a quick call to them plus copies of the original docs allowed them to drop the threat and it was all sorted out amicably. Swansea were most helpful.

Thanks for clearing that up. Back now to figuring out where to install the road-pricing tracking equipment on a 75-year-old two seater.

If you have the tracking equipment available now, install it in the shell before it goes to the crusher!
