I notice that in the specification you get the "Non-smoker package (Free)". Now, call me a cynic, but does that just mean they haven't put an ashtray in and are trying to make people feel good about it? Read more

My son has a Fiat Punto MK2 1.2 16valve, and the starter motor has been failing to always mesh with the flywheel ring when trying to start the engine. I have just tried to get the starter off to have a look at it, but I cannot shift it.

From under the car on the starter there are two bolts (which are attached to a plate) that I have removed, and these bolts are at 7 o'clock and 11 o'clock as it were. Around the other side of the solenoid which I can't see, but can feel, there seems to be a stud, which I assume locates it at a third point. I think it's a stud as it feels pointed at the end, and I cannot feel a nut on it, and doubt that I could remove a nut if there was one there without further dismantling.

So the question is please, has anybody on the foum remove one of these before. If so, are there more than two bolts to remove. If not, is it just a case of brute force, as it is probably a tight fit in it housing.

In anticipation, thanks,

Dear All,

After changing the headlamp bulb on my Volvo V40 I now notice the dipped beam aim is out, and is currently too high.

Can anyone tell me how to adjust please? Car is a 'T' reg 1999 model.

Many thanks.

It might be worth checking the bulb is correctly seated and the locating notches are engaged with the cutouts. You shouldn't need to adjust unless the bulb is skew-wiff or of poor quality and geometrically challenged.

I was recently looking around thinking about changing my Focus TDCi for a MINI One or Cooper. I was surprised to see that £9k would only buy you an 52/03 Cooper or 53/04 One (obviosuly with a/c). Are these cars really in that much demand still, and retaining such value, or is the Mini Cherished scheme particularly overpriced? I'm not sure I could live with the lack of space, but it was a whimsical notion that left me a bit jaw-dropped, as those Coopers are practically 5 years old and have been replaced...

£9k seems a bit pricey.

I'd agree with flunky, there are some expensive ones around but then looking through Autotrader, £9K will get you a 2004 53 Reg Mini Cooper 1-owner, 43k miles (tinyurl.com/2vq9yn)

Or, if you don't mind slightly higher miles a 2004 04 Reg Mini Cooper with 72k miles can be yours for only £7,495 (tinyurl.com/2rjmca)

Today, the business of colour choice is nice and simple. One is typically offered a couple of solid colours (which almost no one seems to go for) plus, for the sum of say, £300, maybe 10 metallic colours.

Here is an alternative strategy for manufacturers: Offer 5 or 6 colours at standard price, and then 100 or so special colours which would sell at a considerable premium - say £1000. The easily contented, frugal types would be able to find something to their liking from the standard colours, (unlike now, when one is pretty well forced to pay the extra for metallic to get anything half decent) while the, er, aspirational motorist would have the option of a truly personalised vehicle.

This is already available to a certain extent with Audis. Any colour from their range, but it costs about £1500 if the colour isn't normally available for the car you want.

2 minutes longer to warm up is two minutes longer
running richer than it should which these units dont like.

It's a 10-year-old Rover. It's not worth spending a penny on, but...if it's really bothering the owner he could raid a scrap-yard for another fan switch, and then run his engine till it's warm, to test it. However, my concern, apart from encouraging him to waste money on an unnecessary repair, is the following.....

What happens, a few months down the line, if the replacement switch subsequently fails, fan stops, engine boils, and pops the fragile head-gasket that these K-series engines are so well-known for? He'll be back on here wishing he'd kept his working, un-switched fan. Just a thought! ;-)

Hello all,
I have been offered a VW Bora TDI (90bhp) S model 2000/X with 113k miles for £2900.
Although not as practical as an hatchback (prefer Audi A3 or Golf mk4 but these are more expensive), it is comparatively cheaper and does seem to be better value for money.
My concern is to the high mileage. It has FVWSH but worried that I could be in for an expensive engine overhaul in the near future. In your opinion, what sort of mileage can I reasonably expect before major repairs? Also worried about the turbo, is there a reasonable test I can do to assess its condition when inspecting the car? At this mileage/age I assume its clutch will need replacing. I hope to carry out the routine servicing together with normal maintenance, brakes, discs, suspension etc.
All opinions and views welcome.

Many thanks,

My dad has a Ford Escort 1.6 zetec with MOT or tax though the engien is fine it has all sorts of ECU problems my uncle is looking into.

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.1 HCS which we have both been using and have managed to get 2000 miles out of it. The MOT is due next month and the last couple of weeks the oil problem I have posted about before has got a lot worse.

The smoke has now become quite a dense blue colour and its using a lot of oil. My question will the labour be too much to ge the oil seals replaced? How much would I likely to get for these two cars so we can sell them both to put towards a single better one?

1995 N Ford Escort 1.6 LX silver, 96k, full service history last serviced 300 miles ago, worked fine until my dad had to stop driving since an accident but now it won't start, the battery is had it but it won't start with another battery either. Its probably just damp ignition compoments or somthing.

1995 N Fiesta Classic 1.1, 103k, only one service invoice, body work in good condition for age, 1 months MOT, 3 months tax, drives perfectly, camshaft noisy and burns oil.

A loan isn't really an option so we are a bit stuck :(.

My dad seems to think its worth spending £300 on the Fiesta to fix all the problems with the engine but I am not so sure. Read more

£300 will easily get you a car with 12 months MoT , so I'd get onto Ebay and have a look. Think un-trendy cars like Skoda Favorit, Fiat Uno etc. The Skodas are usually £150 with 12 months MoT.

Hi guys, need some advice...

My 2006 E-Class was involved in an accident - cost of repair approx 5/6k. however since then it has come to light that the chassis is bent and needs a jig to re-allign. as the car is worth 27k market value the insurers wont right it off. Becuase the chassis is bent would that mean an automatic cat d and should it be written off? should I be concerned that it will be re-alligned? Read more

spot on, bell-boy.
as the scottish judge said:

"....Sheriff Principal Macphail went on to quote from the English case Payton v Brooks where Lord Justice Roskill stated:

'I would only add one word of caution. This conclusion is not a charter under which infuriated plaintiffs, who have the misfortune to have their cars damaged by careless drivers, acquire an unfettered right to recover diminution in value in every case in addition to the cost of repairs. It is essential in such a case, in my judgment, for appropriate evidence to be called to prove diminution in value. I do not think that in the ordinary case the burden of proof which rests on the plaintiff would be discharged merely by calling an individual to prove his idiosyncratic view of the particular loss in a particular case. The diminution in market value must be proved by appropriate evidence of the kind usually called when diminution in market value is sought to be proved as a head of damage. Subject to that qualification, it seems to me that this head of damage is recoverable.'
