A Clio revealing its engine and nothing to do with the bonnet catch this time. A bit more detail here:

The accident wasn't the SatNav's fault but stupidity of the driver, which fortunately didn't result in any injuries (and there could have been many if the train derailed).
Ok, the SatNav could have been set to take a less direct route, but whatever direction anyone goes they should be aware of what they are doing. If she took that route using a paper map, who would she blame? She admitted reaching a gate with a red circle on it, plus by the other signage and what her headlights lit it should have been obvious it was a level crossing.
|
This had nothing to do with sat nav. Sign said "when lights green open gates and drive across". what did she do? Open first gate, drive onto a railway line, stop, close first gate and open second gate.... and then surprised a train arrived.
This driver should not be on the road with or without sat nav.

This incident had nothing whatsoever to do with SatNav.
This was 100% 'thispersonistoostupidtobeallowedontheroad'

So it's a bit like relying on parking sensors then?

I can expect a story some time in the future where someone has reversed off a quay into a harbour, or something similar, and blames the sensors for not bleeping until hitting the water.

Well, yeah. Surely the presence of, oh, I don't know, rails and sleepers and stuff might have been a bit of a clue. Does she also expect the satnav to warn her of pedestrians about to step out into the road? How about the broken-down lorry stopped with its hazards on round that blind corner? Satellite navigation is not a substitute for proper observation of one's surroundings!
Whilst relieved that the consequences of this weren't a lot worse (and they could have been, very easily) I personally feel a bit sorry for the Clio - it deserved a better fate than having its front end smashed to bits by a train just because the numpty behind the wheel was so oblivious to her surroundings that she stopped on a railway line.
And as others have said, she should consider herself exceptionally lucky that the train didn't derail - how many years in prison did that fellow who meandered onto the track at Selby get?

Don't tell Watchdog - otherwise it will be Renault's fault.
able1 - joined 85 weeks ago but this is the first post. Is that a Backroom record?

I would be very interested to see her insurance claim form - assuming she has the mental ability to actually fill it in!
If I was the loss assessor, I would reject it - the 'crash' is as a result of entirely self inflicted negligence, and not the kind of person the insurance company should do business with.

She was on her way to see her boyfriend, according to the article.
Perhaps he should take the hint!

A student? I thought that they were supposed to have some semblence of intelligence?

Ever been to Redditch, FT?

Have I ever been to Redditch? I can't recall - if I have been, I was probably rather drunk at the time...

"A student? I thought that they were supposed to have some semblance of intelligence"...
Sadly, nowadays it doesn't follow - believe me, I recruit graduates for my firm. And even if they do have some academic wisdom, common sense doesn't automatically come with it.
