Can anyone give me an idea of the cost to replace brake pipes on a year 2000 Micra. I'm not sure which need replacing, i think its the rear ones. I am going to get an estimate from the garage but I have no idea of a cost to go on. A rough idea would be appreciated. Read more

You can buy enough pipe and fittings to do most of the car for under £10. Its all down to what their labour rate is. 30 mins labour will likely be enough - but they might want to charge more if they hit any snags.

One of the benefits of MINI ownership is not having to go near dealerships for Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Ford, Vauxhall, etc.

Your expert advice is needed! My mondeo is deisel tdi LX 51 plate on 186000 miles. The problem I have is that the car runs fine when cold but as soon as it warms up [usually 5 - 7 miles] it judders like mad and then finally cuts out. The car won't start again until its cooler [usually 15 minutes] then runs fine again for a few miles.
I have had a diagnostic run but this shows nothing at all. It may be coincidence, but its only been like this since my ex had a small front end prang...
Hope someone can help! Cheers. kelso Read more

Heat should not affect a diesel;to cut off the fuel,it sounds like the electrical feed to the solenoid on the pump;an air leak could do this but neither should be affected by heat.

I have a strong and possibly illogical compulsion to buy an older S-type. Could any S-type owners or similarly experienced backroomers either talk me out of it, or stoke the flames of my desire, as it were?

Budget's about £6k, though this could be stretched a fair bit, given sufficient desire-stoking.

BTW I know all the arguments about high milers and the possible benefits of motorway miles as opposed to a life of cold-engine shopping trips, but would prefer not to get something with 120k+ miles.

I'd intend to keep it for 5 years or so and do average-plus-a-bit annual mileage.

What's to watch out for? Any solid gold tips to spot an S-type that's had a haircut? Best variant? Would I be better off with a XJ6/XJ8 (size isn't important, in this case)?

I've read the car by car breakdown info, but would like to hear personal experience too, if possible. Read more

The green lobby tries to take us back to when England was green and pleasant....what a misconception! Apparently a couple of hundred years ago London was abandoned by the wealthy in summer because of the stench from the Thames. The famous pea soupers killed thousands etc etc and the average speed in London hasn't changed much for centuries. I remeber every house burning coal in the 50's etc etc. Green lobby....do me a favour. If Mr Beeching had had the nounce to keep the railway system as it was instead of tearing up lines we may have had an alternative to the car. My local authority ...Basingstoke... gleefully closes roads and puts in traffic calming and generally does all it can to inconvenience law abiding motorists....it really gets me going....rant over.

Whilst sunning myself in the yank roadster at a set of traffic lights, this morning, I was distracted by the unmistakable camshaft 'tick' of a pinto engine - craning my neck I was stunned to spot the culprit, a mk2 capri replete with swiss cheese sills and a scabby fibreglass bonnet bulge.

The car undoubtably was imported in the early 1990's from Germany and had clearly not benefitted from the local climate and certain lack of maintenance in the mean time....brought back some memories, my father had one of the first 3000E's in the early 1970's and I recall him later pointing out to me the mile post he had hit whilst avoiding a telephone box in Newport Pagnall - he had just left the Aston Martin works and blamed it on an adrenalin rush!

Big Bad Bob

Wonder if anyone could help out on this one for me.
I have an R reg Renault Scenic 1600 with the K7M engine, ally head, cast block. I bought the car with supposedly the head gasket gone, should have been no problem for me to sort as I am an ex Renault technician. I have changed the head gasket and the head twice ( I have changed the head, to make sure there was no internal crack in the head). Although it is not as bad as it first was, I am still getting oil contamination into the header tank, but only at full running temperature and only after half an hour of running. I asked an old mate at Renault who's been in the trade 35 years whether it could be a crack in the block. He said he'd never heard of it over his 35 years in the trade.
Anybody got any ideas or thoughts i would appreciate it, now I have pulled most of my hair out I would like to keep the rest. cheers. Read more

Queried the time taken to get my last new car to my local dealer-the car that I wanted was at another branch on the other side of the country and was told that they don't use delivery drivers any longer. It had 9 ml. on the clock when I got it.

Were you watching the news just now? Had a new VW on, can't remember the model name. Point of report was to show how economical it was compared to hybrid cars.
Meaningless figures given were that the reporter had driven it from Wolfsburg to the BBC in London. I think he said 450 miles, but it may have been 500. He also said the fuel cost £37 and was impressed by the fantastic economy.
Now, a quick calculation suggests that he did (say) 500 miles for £37 - about 52 euros. That diesel in Europe costs about 1 euro a litre so he did about 500 miles at (optimistically) 10 miles a litre. That is 45.54 mpg isn't it? My old BX did more than that, my Berlingo does a lot more than that - and I bet ther are many people on here who would be very disappointed with that mpg from their cars.
Now, I might well have got it wrong in what he said exactly, and my maths ain't too hot either!- so can someone tell me what was so great about this new VW that made it worth putting on the 6 o'clock news???

I can't believe they're making such a big fuss about this polo too. Anyone remember the Lupo 3L? 90+mpg?
