Does anyone know how much the 1.4 will be going for? I settled for a Toyota Yaris, but am considering spending a bit more on a Mini.... Read more

I'm not very convinced by the Mini. I've driven a few and they are fun and nippy for local driving, but very wearing on a long run. I'm a pretty 'big' person (6'4" and nearly 18 stone) and I find the car rather uncomfortable. People say that depreciation is low - indeed it looks good against their list price, but I'm not so sure when you compare against the option-up OTR price that most buyers pay.

If you want small sporty and fun for 2 people then an MX-5 makes a lot of sense. If you want excellent handing and performance they you can get a new Impreza 2.5 WRX OTR for £15k......

If its the Mini styling you're after then what about the Suzuki Swift? - more comfortable, similar styling and much lower cost - its a much more rounded package and comes in either 3 or 5-door shell.

My mates 1994 BMW 740 is running poorly when cold. It starts fine and feels as though the mixture is OK for the first few hundred yards.

After that the revs drop considerably and it feels as if it is going to stall, but doesnt. When fully warmed-up it runs sweet.
Its as if the sensors think the engine is warmer than it actually is. Although the car has done 140k, the engine block has only 45k (BMW replacement).

The plugs are new and it has been recently serviced at an independent (the problem stems from before the service). The car does mixed mileage with occasional 500 mile round trips. Mate hasnt a lot of car DIY experience, but could anyone point him in a likely direction or does he re-mortgage and take a trip to main dealer diagnostics?
Thanks for any ideas.

Are the tappets noisy or are you replacing them because of an anti pollution fault warning on the display?

If they are going to be replaced let a Peugeot dealer do the work as there's been a modification to the tappets.

My old Nissan Bluebird is nearing the end of its life at last, and needs replacing this year.
It's only a second car, which gets very light use (to and from work if I don't cycle, and occasional evening trips when the other car is in use), so I'd like something smaller, and I'd like an automatic.

What would backroomers recommend as a small, cheap, reliable automatic for up to £5K? Read more

Happy Blue!

There are several small automatics on the market and for £5000 you can buy one that is probably no more than three years old. Certainly we bought a two year old Suzuki Wagon R+ auto in late 2004 for just over £5,000 so for your occasional trips, you could surely cope with an older model.

Look for small models from Japanese (Daihatsu) or Korean (Kia/Hyundai) marques as well as Perodua. I'll bet for £3000 you could find something quite interesting.

My girlfriends Ka has had a suspension knock for a while now. I've pointed out that her coil is bent but she still continues to drive it. Yesterday I told her to check the MOT as it may be due soon, so I got the chassis number and checked online, the MOT was due last week.

She dosn't seem to be that bothered but I am worried she is will get into serious trouble, either when a plod notices is or when her wheel falls off. Read more

A bit rich this coming from a guy whose car should not be on the road like I have said ...

armitage, pugugly, oilrag, seem to agree. by the way, this guy has said in another thread that he is driving an 11 year old fiesta worth £400on a provisional licence while he runs a business .

To cut a a long story short, my wife has just managed to pour 2 litres of water into the oil filler, thinking it was the radiator filler. Fortunately she realised her error before starting up the engine (well, a passing bloke pointed it out to her....). The car is currently being towed home by the breakdown service. Seeing as the engine hasn't been turned, would I be right in thinking/hoping that it is a simple matter of completely draining and replacing the oil ? Or is it more complicated than that (i.e. it's a garage job)?

Any helpful advice would be gratefully received. The car is a 10 year old Golf {added to subject header, as per one of the sticky requests at the top of the page - DD}. Many thanks in advance. Read more

Taking the cam cover off is an easy DIY task, maybe this is the way to go for the cost of a gasket?

I am trying to make up a credit card sized information card to leave in each of the cars with all the relevant info needed in case of breakdown / accident, especially when SWMBO is driving.

So far I have

Reg number, make and model, ins company,
Phone numbers for ins company, accident recovery, breakdown, windscreen

Anything else I should include? Some mobile and work numbers? Read more

& not just in the car.
What you should do is e mail yourself a 'My Info', list copies of...

V5
MoT
Insurance

& create similar for holidays etc, with departure times/airlines hotel etc.

Then you'll be able to access it wherever you are.

My S plate (99) Mondeo 1.8LX (Zetec-e engine) has gone from running perfectly well to suddenly deciding it only wants to rev to 4000rpm. After that, there's major kangaroo-ing and the power drops to tickover before picking up again. This happens when it's on the drive and when going down the road.

Just before the probs, we noticed a whistle when the accelerator was pressed (sounded like a turbo whistle). Dunno if that had any bearing on it. Could it just be plugs/leads/coil or something more serious?

It only had it's MOT three weeks ago, though we know how useful those are! Any ideas out there? Read more

Don't like the sound of a rattle in the cat. The only other thing that comes to mind is the speedo working OK? Fords won't rev over 4,000 without a vehicle speed signal.
