Enjoying my hols here in northern California, and was surprised to see so many apparant 4WD pick ups stuck in snow after recent snow falls. Friends with whom I am staying tell me that many of these monsters are only 2WD and their owners often assume that their ground clearance and 5.7 litre V8s will get them through the snow! Thier journeys back to LA & SF are often delayed!
US gallons currently $2.99 from Chevron at Auburn...tis almost a pleasure to fill up my friends 'Outback'.The Subaru Outback variant is also available here with the 5 door Impreza, but why bother when the Legacy is so cheap? Enough to make me cry into my Marguerita.

Here is a situation:
Mr A's car is damaged by Mr B's car and Mr A claims against Mr B's insurer.
Five months later Mr A sells his car, damage and all.
Eleven months later Mr A's insurer's solicitor asks for repair quotes to present to Mr B's insurer.
My question is this:
What can Mr A expect from Mr B's insurer, seeing as he no longer owns the damaged car?
Apart from 'nothing'! Is there any kind of 'usual procedure' for this situation? Any experience of similar?
Sorry for a lengthy first post. Read more
He was a bit silly to sell the car with an outstanding, unresolved motor claim. Why didn't he try to finalise this before selling the car?
Did he inform Mr B's insurers he was going to sell the car?
If not, why not?
Was there much or very little damage?
Has he suffered a verifiable loss on the sale value of the vehicle?
Did he decide to waive any claim but is now re-thinking the matter?
Is this just a 'hypothetical' situation?
In my part of the country (rural Midlands) we have very large numbers of cars driving around on East European plates - mainly Polish, but also Latvian, Estonian etc etc.
On Sunday I saw a very nice BMW on Polish plates - only snag was that the windscreen and front side widows were heavily tinted. This is of course illegal under UK law. I have also seen some very rough cars - which would (IMHO) not pass an MoT.
Anyone have any idea on the regs with regard to using an overseas car in the UK - i.e. how long can it be used on foreign plates and when do they become liable to UK MoT test or road tax (presumbaly never if on overseas plates?). Also, I wonder if they can do one trip 'home' each year and 'restart the clock' so that the car never actually needs to be UK registered. Do they ever get checked for insurance or, indeed, that they are actually registered in their 'home' country? I doubt our local coppers would want the bother of checking up on them (too much effort and might need to call up an interpreter).
With EU expansion into Eastern Europe and usual British slackness in law enforcement I wonder if there is a major loophole here and we have a few uninsured deathtraps running around? Read more
But at least he buys his fuel here. Some minor consolation, perhaps..?
........ is an easy thing to do.
My story starts with me being foolish to forget when my M.O.T ran out. I am bad at things like that, like remembering dates, times and numbers etc. Only when the DVLA wrote to me to say my tax needed renewing did I dig out my M.O.T certifcate and find out it was 2 months out of date. I phoned up a garage I trust and they said the car could come in a week later. During this time my tax also expired and I still had to drive my car to get to work.
I now happily have a valid M.O.T certificate and will be getting my tax done on saturday. Forgive me for driving an unroad worthy, (and thus prehapps uninsured?) can without tax), but it can easily be done.
I feel I am quite an average person, who forgets things from time to time. What gets my goat is how easy it is to forget ones M.O.T until a tax reminder comes through the door.
Why can't the DVLA and VOSA link their tax and M.O.T databases? If we can send letters out to people so they don't forget to make a contribution to Gordon Brown, why is it so difficult to send letters out to people to remind them to get their M.O.Ts done?
There are many stupid people who drive without M.O.T, insurance and tax, but that is because they don't want to pay out for them, not forget about them.

But if the car is not registered to the correct "owner" or address then ANPR without plod-on-a-bike to do the chasing bit is useless. Although it will catch the OP if he travels to Hull.
From my recollection of Hull, there is no reason to visit.

He wont look at me funny if i ask that will he?
not normally, you have to ask for it to be done and will probably cost a bit more due to its location, good idea to get it changed though!

Does anybody know what long term effects the Tesco petrol problem might have on a cat due to misfiring and coating?

You will also have to live around the south east to have likely to have been affected in the first instance.
Interestingly, I failed to fill up the bike with petrol at Tesco in Bridlington on Sunday - they were closed and a tanker was there pumping out the underground tanks into the tanker.
The same happened at Tesco in Hull on Monday. So maybe the SouthEast is not the only area.
The cylinder head on our 1995 Liteace (auto diesel) has gone, and our mechanic recommends we replace the engine as the cheapest option. Unfortunately, we cannot find the engine number anywhere. Lack of a repair manual doesn-t help - does anyone have any ideas where I could find a repair manual (in english), and/or where to find the engine number? Failing that - how would we go about finding a replacement engine with only the VIN number and the Engine number 2C that are on the registration document?
Many thanks

Look in Auto trader or Exchange and Mart there are numerous companies offering heads and complete engines for these.
My 96 'N' A4 1.8 petrol (non-turbo) has just failed the MOT with CO %vol .547 - the limit is .300
Also the lambda failed with 1.031 - limit is 1.030
The garage will investigate on Thursday, but kind of hinted that suspicion lies with the catalytic converter.
The engine was new 3 years ago and uses no oil at all. The cat doesn't tinkle like I've heard on some Audis, but I'd say the exhaust has got a little noisier recently.
A cat is approx £90 from GSF. Would Backroomers replace the cat as a matter of course, or is there there any other likely cause?
BTW I forgot to do the italien tuneup before dropping the car at the MOT station.
Thanks

Thanks FB.
Turned out to be the lambda sensor itself at fault. The garage charged me £79 inc labour and VAT to fix.
Will I get more mpg (all other factors being equal) now my CO is below the limit?
Put another way, does excessive emissions mean excessive fuel being burnt, assuming the cat's working correctly?
