Hi all. Well just got home today with loads of steam coming from under the bonnet. Got the r.a.c. out to have a look, he put a pressure tester on it and water started running out from underneath. he could not see where the leak was coming from but suspected the plastic manifold, what-ever this is. Any way, the garage is now having a look at it, and i am waiting a phone call. Would anyone out there tell me if this is going to be an expensive job or not. The car did not boil up or loss any power, not that there is much to start with on these. Any comments please. Thank-you all. Graham.

The Mondeo is coming up due for a new set of front boots, but I'm a little concerned over the wear pattern of the existing ones.
The front tyres are Falken ZE512's and have covered just under 20,000 miles. The main part of the tread is down to around 3mm, but the tread within 2cm or so of both inner and outer edges of both front tyres is almost gone. I've had tyres wear on one side due to tracking problems before, but I've never seen tyres wear on both edges before. I am not fastidious about monitoring pressures, but when I have gone to adjust them, I can't ever recall them being more than 2-3 psi under the recommended pressures. The car is not driven particularly hard, and most of its mileage is on motorways.
I had a four wheel alignment check/adjustment done when the Falkens were fitted and the printout showed everything to be within factory tolerances. That was 20k ago though. The car still steers straight at present, and there are no signs that anything is overly worn or out of alignment.
Can I just fit a new set of tyres, or is there something else that needs attention?
Cheers

It's time to renew my step-sons insurance policy. He is currently with NU Direct and they want £930 TPFT! Not so happy a quote. So I used Moneysupermarket.com and find some quotes cheaper etc.
But the interesting thing is, one company rang me to check on what we thought of their quote and when I told them I'd found cheaper they couldn't offer be a better deal but offered to put me through to "Call Connect". I thought might as well try.
So they put my in touch with a broker called GSI Insurance Services (Southern) Ltd. They found me a policy for £619 TPFT with HSBC... does this mean broker's often better than what we're led to believe is cheaper Internet prices? Or am I missing something here?
Anyone had dealings with this GSI Insurance broker??

Step-son is 20, car is a Pug 306 1.6 XS on an L plate (94) and he has 2 years no claims. We do not live in the cheapest part of the country for car insurance because there are lots of nice cars around and you get people from outside the area targetting it.
Anyway the car is not worth that much (£500?) and most comprehensive policies had fairly high excess due to his age (e.g. one was £370 and dropped to £250 when 21). Have got a fair number of quotes for TPFT and fully comprehensive. So third party seems the better option due to cost - and he doesn't have £1000 to spend on insurance at the moment - and as you say might as well go for the cheapest in that case.
But I still cannot see how going through a broker can save around £300, or 30%.

Still dithering about my mid life crisis car. One of the cars I'm considering has a built in phone with a sim card slot. My phone contract is up for renewal this month and I think I'm right in saying that o2 won't supply two sim cards with the same number. (one for my phone, one for the car)
Anyone know which phone companies do? Read more
I have car with a sim slot and built in car phone with a handset & handsfree. Very 80s/early 90s, even though this is a 2002 car and even the current models only offer this (still at high cost) instead of a more up-to-date Bluetooth soluition.
I bought a Vodafone PAYG sim for £1 (it only accepts GSM900 e.g. Vodafone/O2) keep it in the slot all the time and divert my normal phone to it when it's worth it (long enough journey or expect a call - if I forget, I'll just let the mobile ring). I have set my mobile (a SonyEricsson K800i) to have the right jab on the joystick be the All Calls Divert shortcut. It always defaults to the last number used, so just unlock, right, ok, lock and that's it diverted.
I have more free minutes on my contract than I can use, so there's no divert cost for me. I don't make many car calls either so not too fussed about the PAYG call charges.
That said, I have a Parrot CK3100 in the other car that is so much better. I don't have to touch the phone, it connects automatically.

My Mum used to run a Xsara and complained it was making a terrible knocking noise from the back. The mechanic took it round the block and said it was the front anti roll bar links. My mum swore it was from the back but after changing them the noise disappeared.
As we are aware, the 'SPECS' detection system calculates average speed over a set distance. Does anyone know if each individual camera also registers a vehicle's absolute speed as it passes the gantry?
If not, then could a speeding motorist passing the first SPECS gantry slow to a crawl in order to get the average speed down before passing the next gantry?
Not that I would condone such action, of course - just wondering..... Read more
Someone told me that if you change lanes between the 2 cameras that they can't
work out your average speed. Is this true? Sounds rubbish to me but.....

Thanks both!
Number_Cruncher, that sounds plausible. I know 20k is a fair life, but I was just a little concerned at the wear pattern.
Kith, it's a TD but I suspect the engine is about the same weight as the V6. I've been running at 31PSI, but the pressure has dropped down to 28 on occasion.
