Help!! I have a pug 306 1.8xt. I get a loud thud/bang when i go over bumps and holes. garage have heard it but cannot solve. Any ideas.?

Forgot to mention noise sounds more like its from the back. Not spare tyre or gear box mounts. Could it be subframe mounts??

Just a thought minimepug, but a friend some years ago had a 70s Ford Escort hatchback that clonked over bumps so loudly that I was sure it was suspension related, a bush perished away or a dud balljoint. In the end it turned out to be the hatchback which had lost a rubber cushion and was banging on the frame, given the jelly-like structure of that car.
I felt very ashamed not to have spotted what it was. I recount this to make the point that it may not be anything important. But of course it may, although the dealer would probably have found it if it was. Check all the doors especially the rear door or hatchback.

having a lot of 306 experience Id put my money on it being one of 2 things, either the spare wheel cage isnt fastened up tight or the wheel in it is too thin for it, or the rear subframe mounts are shot. The mounts are hard to replicate at standstill, the cage is easy to replicate at standstill.

I had this problem with my old Xsara estate. Turns out the spare wheel was too small for the cage. The previous owner had swapped it for a smaller wheel that didn't fit the car - probably sold the original on Ebay. Didn't have much comeback because I bought the car at auction.
I'd wondered why there was a loud clonking noise coming from the back of the car and my local garage had put a block of wood in there to stop it happening. They'd never noticed the spare was the wrong one, just thought the cage was loose.

On some peugeots subframe mounts can be tightened up, although this is only a temp. measure.
Normally if there is no obvious shock or spring damage, bangs and thuds are worn suspension bushes.
I took my car to a garage with a thud and they could not find it, saying that they could charge me for 5 hours work
to strip suspension and then find it if I wished, but advised that these things normally get worse so that it obvious which bit has gone.
Sometimes torsion bars can stick and then release but this is a often associated with a harsh ride as it is not moving for minor ripples in surfaces.
Other option is to hit suspension arms/anti roll bars with flat of hand and you my feel some slight looseness in one part ...this will be a thud when the force is multlplied up by the weight of the rear end of the car.
Or keep going over holes with that part of the suspension, as it will hasten the time it get really noticeable....trouble doing that increases risk of wearing out the rest of the suspension.
Saying all that , I had a peugeot 205 that did that and it was something "bent" within the shock, replaced shock and problem went.
Can you get a thud by sudden pushes and lifts on rear end by hand?

id bet on it being the subframe mounts, there generally overlooked on 306's. you can get new one's from buypartsby.com fro £40 for the set and fitting is quite simple and can be done one at a time with the axle in situ, make sure you put a bit of grease on each one when you fit them aswell or they can squeek for a while while settling in

id agree with chris id go for subframe mounts i replaced mine and it was like a new car! stuck to the road like glue (wasnt bad before) but would love going around corners
I got mine off ebay for £11 each might be worth looking there

My Mum used to run a Xsara and complained it was making a terrible knocking noise from the back. The mechanic took it round the block and said it was the front anti roll bar links. My mum swore it was from the back but after changing them the noise disappeared.
