Tesco's Petrol problems - ggh1
Does anybody know what long term effects the Tesco petrol problem might have on a cat due to misfiring and coating?

Yes, there can be damage and long term effects. AA report here

>>seconds after driving away from the petrol pump>>

If you had, by any chance, filled up with contaminated fuel (and it's not been a possibility for some time now), then it would take much longer than a few seconds to reveal any problems.

Certainly longer than it would appear for you to post your concern (..."is flashin")...:-)

You will also have to live around the south east to have likely to have been affected in the first instance.

That aa link is interesting although generally relates to misfueling rather than fueling with contaminated fuel.

If I may piggy back on this thread with a directly related question.

I filled up (from almost empty) with £8 around 3 weeks ago (2L petrol BMW). Just as this was being run down my engine light came on and performance started to deterioriate. I then filled up with a full tank (somewhere else). At one point the car was not giving more than 3000rpm.

Had the error codes reset but engine light came back. 4 days ago it went out. Cars performance is pretty much normal now.

It would *appear* that the £8 was "contaminated" and it took half a tank of decent petrol to clear the system - does that sound feasible?

So my question is the same as the OP's - all seems well now but will my cat be defective in 12 months (MOT) time? I can't see how there is anything I can do to check for this now.

Or, the fact it was only £8 of bad fuel, maybe means no long term damage is done?

Folks

Aren't we being a bit unfair in constantly referring to Tesco's petrol all the time?

Tesco were just the victims of the tail-end of this incident. The worst affected cars seem to be Total and ASDA fuelled ones - yet who's heard about them? Although they will accept claims; one Total garage told one of my many affected customers yesterday that they were trying to keep it quiet, so would she please not tell anybody where she bought the fuel [on the 29th.]

It's a much wider problem than just Tesco's and Morrison's. Does anyone have a link that spells out the full picture? There's so much still unknown. The quantity of fuel contaminated in the original Harvest Energy incident. The contaminant? It's concentration in the original batch? The amount of that fuel that remained in the tank and contaminated Vopak's fill? What was that amount and at what ratio? Just knowing the volume of contaminated fuel would allow a reasonable estimate of the number of cars affected.

Where did those two differently-contaminated batches go? On exactly which dates and how many different brands were supplied? Knowing some of that would help those dealing with the aftermath; but the companies are hoping that it'll all go away and blow over. They must realize that only a tiny fraction of the affected cars have shown symptoms so far; [failed oxy sensors don't often give physical effects] and most cases are going to turn up at the next MOT - long after any receipts have been lost.

Interestingly, I failed to fill up the bike with petrol at Tesco in Bridlington on Sunday - they were closed and a tanker was there pumping out the underground tanks into the tanker.

The same happened at Tesco in Hull on Monday. So maybe the SouthEast is not the only area.
