Afternoon,

I have bought a Proton GLS, saloon car, registered 1993, from a very well known internet auction site. The car has full service history and an old lady had it from new. I only paid £415 for the car with twelve months MOT, however, the sunroof is leaking, I don't want to remove it, is there a product that I can buy on the web, where I can put the tube into a caulking gun and fill between the glass and rubber seal and fill the drain channels, I won't use the sunroof after this, I just want to stop the leak.

Thank you for your help,

Nick. Read more

Hi,
i,ve bought a brand new Ford Galaxy and was wondering what needs to be done regarding running in the engine.
Or do new engines need running in?
thanks Read more

BP - c270 same as mine? I tipt. down a gear or two to up the
revs. on NSL roads - runs at about 60mph in 3rd @ 4000rpm
to give it a good 'cough' . -when warmed-up of course.

Yes, but ideally you're supposed to put the car under load (hence running up the hill). There's such a lot of torque in the 270CDi that steady speed running is effortless.
It's quite noticeable if I forget for a while and then have to boot it up, say, a motorway slip road - everyone behind disappears in cloud of smoke.

About 4/5 months ago my daughter's Golf mark 3 1.4 had a new rad fitted as the old one had been leaking for some time. Ever since then I've noticed that the system doesn't seem to depressurise when it cools -- even overnight. When hot the top hose is noticably hard to squeeze and still is in the morning.
Undoing the expansion bottle cap releases the pressure with a surge and then the hose is all soft again.
Any ideas on this as I don't think it's normal. Head gasket looms to mind but the coolant has no signs of oil nor any water in oil. Nor mayonnaise round oil filler cap. Doesn't appear to lose coolant either.
I thought I might get another expansion bottle cap from a breaker in case this wasn't releasing any pressure ------- believe me that top hose gets very hard so there must be alot of pressure building up.
Ant thoughts very welcome -- thanks

If there's pressure in the cooling system when cold, then it's odds on a HG problem... try these:

1. remove cap (engine cold) refit cap and run engine for a minute or so then stop it. Remove the cap. Is it already pressurised?

2. With cap removed start engine again, and look into the header tank - are there bubbles rising up into the tank?

Answer to either (or both) is yes, then the HG is gone. You could also take it along to your local garage and get them to stick their exhaust gas analyser in the header tank.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Having been in a rear end shunt (hit by third party, me stationary, them about 45 -50mph), neither airbags in the both vehicles went off. Mine a Polo, theirs a Yaris?

So I supposed the question is, should I have expected my airbag to open or not? Theirs I assume should of.

Here's a Yaris crashing at 40MPH:

Ok, your car would have absorbed some of the impact too, and it moved forward a little, but the fact that airbags didn't go off in the Yaris would indicate a *much* lower speed.

Does anyone watch this on satellite, a fly on the wall docu-soap an English Car Repairer in Marbella ?
I was interested to know if anyone had views about what it would be like to work for Jock the proprietor of this company ?
The programme does have some interseting stuff on how different faults are repaired by their mechanics, but the working atmosphere of the garage leaves a bit to be desired I think. Read more

I have noticed that most of the new German cars I have been in recently automatically lock their doors when the car is in motion and then unlock again when stationary. Whilst I see this is a safety feature, it must surely put a lot of wear on the door lock actuators compatred to 'normal' use. Does anyone know if this can be turned off ?
I have a new A4 Avant coming soon and I dont like the look of this feature. Read more

Later mk2 Mondeos with 3 button RF fob & Mk 3 Mondeo can also have the 2 stage unlocking set up, takes less then 30 seconds to switch the feature on following the directions in the owners manual.

I seem to remember recently reading that Vauxhall were offering an 'official' (i.e. warrantied) upgrade on their 150bhp CDTi Astras but now can't find anything about it.

Is anyone aware of this and whether it's likely to be usable for the remainder of the GM group 150BHP diesels ?

Thurlby Motors offer genuine 200 bhp conversion with full warranty support (they are an official Vauxhall dealer).

It's supposed to be amazing and still return >45 mpg in daily driving.

Who thinks that there might be local elections coming up?

Thousands of motorists who break speed limits could receive warning letters rather than fines under a controversial plan, the (Hull Daily) Mail can reveal.

This is being proposed by the (Conservative) Leader of the Council

Personally I think it would have a positive effect on those
drivers who only just exceeded the limit i.e. doing 35 or
36 mph in a 30 mph area, so they can change
their driving slightly and slow down. It would educate some drivers
whilst still catching those who blatently break the law.

36mph is not "just over" 30mph, it's 20% over, nearly double a reasonable walking pace, and a sign either of carelessness or deliberate disregard for the limit. "Just over" might be 31 or 32 because speedometers are not that accurate.

Aplogies for the publication, but I am sure the owner is very calm and is one of those motorists whose car is "only for getting me from A to B !"

Not!

Just heard a snipett on the radio stating that an £800k Bugatti Veyron has been involved in an accident in Chertsey. Could this be the UK's most expensive ever write off ?

Wouldn't fancy being the insurers of this one :) Read more
