Electioneering? - Tim Allcott
Who thinks that there might be local elections coming up?

Thousands of motorists who break speed limits could receive warning letters rather than fines under a controversial plan, the (Hull Daily) Mail can reveal.

This is being proposed by the (Conservative) Leader of the Council

So what's different to Gordon Brown giving senior citizens a cash sum to help pay Council tax just before the last General Election?

Dozens of other examples.

It seems the proposed change is for only fining once the speed limit plus 10% plus 4 mph has been reached. At present it is the speed limit plus 10% plus 2 mph for an instant fine. All that is going to happen is that some people who have been just over the old limit will be given a warning letter rather than a fine and points.

Personally I think it would have a positive effect on those drivers who only just exceeded the limit i.e. doing 35 or 36 mph in a 30 mph area, so they can change their driving slightly and slow down. It would educate some drivers whilst still catching those who blatently break the law.

Speed cameras have certainly become despised by many drivers as they are unforgiving and looked upon as a cash earner. Being told off for a minor misdemeanour is certainly better than an automatic fine and points.

Personally I think this is a good idea and should be adopted nationwide.

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

The odds are that their speedometer would have been reading just over 40mph in such cases.

I think it is a superb idea...

the only difference is 2mph to existing limits....for the serious offender (whose car is registered of course) they still get done, but your mother, sister, daughter etc who absent mindly drifts their speed up a bit, they get a decent reminder, but no points

and it doesn't look just like a money grabbing exercise, which it does at the moment

36mph is not "just over" 30mph, it's 20% over, nearly double a reasonable walking pace, and a sign either of carelessness or deliberate disregard for the limit. "Just over" might be 31 or 32 because speedometers are not that accurate.
