Laugh....I nearly did:

So my 15 year old Escort could be charged less than my brand new Volvo V50 estate. I know which one I would rather have in a "green" comparison. What the heck has length got to do with it?
Last one out, turn off the lights....

>>What the heck has length got to do with it?>>
You'll be surprised...:-)
Seriously, many so-called gas guzzlers take up pretty much the same road space as, for instance, a Ford Mondeo.
It's a pernicious approach that bears little or no relation to the facts.
As for global warming, don't get me started. It's one of the biggest kidologies yet conceived.

Prog coming up on Channel 4 this week - the great global warming swindle or similar title. Thursday 9pm :-) All the pro greens will claim the programme was produced by some oil company apologist and ignore any sensible argument...

>>and ignore any sensible argument.>>
The current New Labour argument is designed, to all intents and purposes, to create a climate (no pun intended) for imposing new taxes.
The UK's government's contrived contribution to any so called global warming prevention measures is, in view of its miniscule effects, meaningless.
As I've mentioned before, we've just had the second warmest winter on record. The record was set in the Victorian era.
I suspect that 4x4s, 747s and other "gas guzzlers" were not a common sight in Queen Victoria's reign.

But just imagine how much methane was produced by all the horses stood in the jams that were central London then!
And they even produced it when they weren't being driven!

If you watched Channel 4 Dispatches last night, various professors reviewed UK CO2 "savings".
Most surprisingly they claimed many new homes claim to meet current energy requirements .. but are never tested (no prosecutions at all) and up to 50% on one estate failed the leak test - designed to test house ability to retain warm air.
New Gov't requirements for all houses to be carbon neutral by 2016...!
Oh and by the way you will not be surprised they reckonned gov't figures on UK savings are overstated and will not be met.. So anything you hear from Gov't is hot air...
As for cars, gov't ministerial cars clocked up 10% more miles last year... don't do as I do syndrome...

Quoting from the article:
Council officers recommended the move as an incentive to cut carbon dioxide emissions because smaller cars tend to produce fewer emissions.
They also said that if enough people switched to smaller cars, it could free up more than 520 spaces in a city where demand for parking permits outstrips the number of spaces available.
A spokeswoman for Norwich City Council said: ?As well as taking up less space, smaller cars also produce, on average, less greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution than larger cars. So, small cars are also better for the environment. As part of our sustainable transport strategy we want to encourage the use of smaller cars, and car sharing.?
It is a shame they have given priority to the emmissions side of the proposal rather than the increase in the number of cars that could park on the congested roads. No doubt this proposal will feed down to Ken Livingstone as another good idea, except he will combine it with an emmissions element as well to increase any charge further.

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

There is a new series starting on BBC2 tonight 'Are we there yet?' which might be interesting.
It is looking at how government transport is contradictory and a hopeless failure (no surprise there, then). The first programme deals with road pricing (and says it will be essential), others in the sereis deal with buses, trains and planes.
|
Quote from the article:
"In south-west London a controversial scheme was introduced last month to charge the owners of Jaguars, Mercedes or 4x4s three times the normal cost for parking permits. Families in Richmond who own two large cars could pay up to £750."
Lucky I drive a BMW then isn't it (as well as not living in Richmond)

The green lobby tries to take us back to when England was green and pleasant....what a misconception! Apparently a couple of hundred years ago London was abandoned by the wealthy in summer because of the stench from the Thames. The famous pea soupers killed thousands etc etc and the average speed in London hasn't changed much for centuries. I remeber every house burning coal in the 50's etc etc. Green lobby....do me a favour. If Mr Beeching had had the nounce to keep the railway system as it was instead of tearing up lines we may have had an alternative to the car. My local authority ...Basingstoke... gleefully closes roads and puts in traffic calming and generally does all it can to inconvenience law abiding motorists....it really gets me going....rant over.
