Oddsbodkins, what a jolly jape. Probably slightly less stupid than that latest car surfing craze from the states. Read more
Good evening fellow Honest- John- ers.
I am thinking of buying a Saab 9-5 with slight damage. I can fix the panel damage but the airbag in the drivers seat has gone off and the seat cover is split. Would I be held hostage by the main Saab dealer or can I fit a new bag and get the seat re-stitched ? Is it a computer job to re set the system ? Any advice ? Thanks
Happy New Year,
Mike

Thanks a lot for prompt, well informed replies. I think I'll duck out from this one - its much easier to fix my trusty old 740 estate and even though its noisier and slower than a Saab 9-5 it can carry more stuff !!
Thanks again - I'll put your consultation fee in the next worthwhile charity box I see .
Cheers,
Mike
I need to get a faulty 5-sp gearbox shipped from Cheshire down to the East Midlands. Its not any great value (£100 or so - I just want it for parts) - I've been staggered at how much couriers want to charge (£80+) and on a pallet its something like £75+VAT.
Anyone got any ideas on how I could cheaply ship this gearbox, short of driving up there and getting it myself... Read more
I use www.pharos-international.co.uk for courier deliveries. They ship up to 30kg for a tenner or so, and I believe they do pallets for about £50. They use UPS, so you get a tip-top service for a bargain rate.
I don't think the low ratio is working properly on my Isuzu Denver pickup. When selected, it struggles to pull away as though the handbrake is still on, or it is being held back in someway, it struggles to reach 10 MPH.
Just had it serviced, approx. 9500 miles, but the garage think it is ok, although the service receptionist didn't think it felt right. Any ideas on what could be wrong, or am I expecting too much?? Read more
I seem to be having the problem on slippery mud surfaces, although at the garage, they did try it in their car park. All the selection is electronic, but you seem to need to go to 4H before 4L. The handbook doesn't recommend using it on the road, stating tyre wear and poor fuel consumption. Will try it again at the weeknd on a loose surface.
Thanks for your reply.
Sorr if this has been posted before, but just seen this post from another forum.
I didn't know these were there - or even planned. However I do this route fairly regularly, so I'm pleased to be warned.
I find what has been said about the changing lanes interesting - can anyone comment?
Following the below post (quoted) I felt it necessary to freecycle
the loophole with these SPECs cameras. If you're a bit like me and
a little trigger happy with the old throttle foot, then if you're
worried your average speed between J29 + J31 on the M5 is a little
high, simply swap lanes. SPECs cameras only check the average in
one lane, so by swapping lanes you avoid the camera looking out for
you at the other end of the speed trap. Happy (fine-free) motoring.
"The new yellow cameras being installed between J29 and J31 on the M5
are not traffic cameras but are SPEC average speed cameras. The first
(and subsequent) cameras read your number plate and if you arrive at
the next camera too quickly it is £60 and 3 points. They do not use
film, and you will not see a flash. Prosecutions are electronically
produced.
There are 4 sets of cameras currently installed in each direction.
Although SPECs are used elsewhere in the country these I believe are
the first set to be installed in this region and are likely to catch
a lot of drivers.
I do not know when they will be switched on (they might be already
although there are no warning signs up yet but although warning signs
are in the Home Office guidelines their absence will not constitute a
defence).
The cameras are installed between M5 J29 Exeter (Honiton Road) and M5
J31 (A30 Interchange) ."

Having just had 3 bottles of Warsteiner and sharing a bottle of Nuits-St-Georges with my wife, a fathers day present, it is the 37th aniversary of the first time I got to know her well, if you know what I mean!
We went out in my father's Vauxhall Victor estate, my Cortina 1600E was in for repairs. Has anyone ever gone out for a first thingy in such a awful naff car? Read more

With the hopeful arrival of our first child(even at my age) in a couple of months,Could any of you guys and galls recommend any particular make/type of car seat.
I expect we shall initially go for a seat mounted in the rear as both of our cars have multi air bags up front.Any info gratefully received. Read more
Thanks for the advice and info. given
I was delivering goods on a fairly run down estate today and there was a young guy lying under a Corsa doing some welding with an arc welder. During the fifteen or so minutes I was there he was working away quite happily, taking great care with his efforts.
No eye protection whatsoever, not even a pair of dark glasses. I wouldn't like to be in his shoes tonight.

Sounds like India. Every street has a metal basher. Manufacturing large gates on the side of the road isn't uncommon. We also saw some guys laying hot rolled tarmac whilst wearing flip flops!
I have just heard from the garage that my 306 is beyond economical repair as the ECU and coils have failed (aparently a common problem with the 1.4).
I am resigned to the fact that a new car will be on the cards but am not sure how to dispose of the old one. The garage suggested that I call the local council (Hammersmith and Fulham) who will take it away for free, however the cheapskate in me feels I should be able to get something for it!
The car is a 1998 S reg Peugeot 306 1.4L 3 door in white (I know its not the most desirable of models!) with 70,000 on the clock.
Its my first time posting but have read for a while so hopefully someone will be able to help.
Thanks Read more
Dash re setting itself, lucky its a 306 with normal wiring, the multiplexed stuff like later 206 & 307 have loads of weird, strange & odd electrical faults appear when the Sagem coil pack starts spiking the electrical system.
Its pretty normal to end up with a disco effect with the instruments / warning lights & plenty of warning messages up on the display to add to the effect.
Just curious - who invented Motor Insurance and when did it become a legal requirement. Read more
Insurance a legal requirement now? Blimey, what will this greedy government think of next. I suppose they'll soon want to make it compulsory for everyone to have one of those disc thingys you see on cars in posh areas.
Flaming liberty.
