Cornish Lass

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could advise whether £79 inc VAT and fitting is a good price for a Corsa windscreen? Not had a screen done before and thought it sounded pretty good as was expecting around £100.

Thanks Read more

Thanks for everyone's replies.

L'escargot - Car is only insured 3rd party and windscreen specifically not covered in the policy. Its hubby's car, had a large stone hit it just before Christmas and the chip has rapidly spread to a 6 inch crack, so definately needs replacing asap.

Thanks again,

daveyK_UK

so you will be looking at £6,500 with a bit of dealer.

thats a bargain, these cars will last 15 years if regulary serviced.

As part of a flyer about a forthcoming presentation by BMW about the new model MINI, was the following snippet.

-----------8<--------

The UK MINI production triangle has plants at Hams Hall, Oxford and Swindon.
This has received substantial investment of nearly 200 million to build the
new model and to increase MINI production capacity by up to 20%. The new
production triangle employs in total 6,350 associates, a number set to
increase by 450 to 6,800 in the medium-term as production nears the maximum
capacity of 240,000 MINIs per annum.

-----------8<--------

So, it isn't *all* doom and gloom for motor manufacturing in Britain, and it's also intersting to see that a 20% increase in capacity does not mean a 20% increase in the number of people working there.

"cleaners, maintenance, payroll staff, canteen staff, security, accounts " - they're
all outsourced so probably don't show in the figures. Well maybe
not the accountants.

I bet they have included them in the figures. In my experience whenever there is any expansion or added employment they include uncle Tom Cobley and all - and also part-timers (i.e. 'created 100 new jobs' - when most are actually part time).

Hi
My car is in the garage right now for the second time in a few weeks. Went in as I was losing water and the temp gauge was reading very high. Initially my garge said my radiator was corroded and I agreed to have it reconditioned. After receiving it back, within 48 hours my temp gauge went to maximum on a short drive and after the engine and radiator had cooled I discovered there was practically no water in the radiator (it was full when I collected it from the garage). It is now back with them and I have been told it's my head gasket (early stages of failure as no white smoke, no mayo on the dip stick, but water being pumped out of the overflow in the radiator due to pressure). My apologies for the long story, but I am am hoping someone can 1) let me know if they think the garage is right? 2) if it is HG, do you think it's worth paying for the repair (car has done 95K miles)? 3) is this the start of a long list of garage bills - ie, should i give up and buy another car?
Thanks very much! Read more

Hi all,

Question is from my brother

He has a Mercedes Sprinter 2.2 CDI 2000'W and when starting from cold, it takes several attempts to start. When the engine is warm he says starting is even worse.

Could this be the glow plugs on their way out, and if so what would he be looking at for a replacement (5 cylinder engine I think).

Thanks in advance. Read more

Hi folks,
just seen a "fresh" car in town today, looks like it may be a chrimbo pressie for a baseball cap, however, it has the most unusual and eye-catching paintwork that i think i've seen. is it a "standard" paint used by Rover, or is it some-body's idea of customising?

the car is a "k" reg Rover 414, no other apparent mods, still steel wheels etc. but as you walk towards the car from the side it is "solid" green, when you have passed it and turn to look back at it, it is "solid" purple!. i even tried to reverse course to check it wasn't painted different on both sides, but as i walked towards it again, the purple side turned green!. and the other side was now purple. Doh! i give up, is it greeny-blue on the v5?

cheers
billy. Read more

My last Rover 45 Impression had a similar finish called Odyssey Blue pearlescent. If you walked around the car in sunlight the colour changed from the blue to a turquoise. Looked absolutely lovely especially after a clean and polish. It was the the missus who chose it rather than the boring Silver metallic one available for the same price.

Hi

I have a pug 306 P reg and have been having a few issues with the dipped lights. The side lights work ok and the main beam works ok but the dipped beam does not work at all..

It was a bit of a funny issue as it would not work for a few days and then started work. The dipped beams stopped workin recently and they have not started to work so i thought i needed to do something about it.

Went to a local electrial garage and said it would be the resistor situated near the batt. I got a replacement from the Pug garage and fitted it but still got the same problem..

After fiddling with it a little i noticed that if i connected the two brown cables together which would normally go to the resistor the dipped beam would work when i put the side lights on.

Just wandering if there is any danger in doin this?... is there any long term damage it might cause (burn the wiering, fuse etc)?... I am lookin to get rid of the car soon but i needed the lights to work

Just wandering if anyone knows what the issue might be and also if what i have done would cause any long term damage..

Thanks any advice would help Read more

It looks like an exaggerated version of the typical exec. car being designed at the moment. I liked the retro look of the old car. New exec. cars from Range Rover and Aston Martins to BMW's all seem to be designed for people with more money than taste.

My car is due its first MOT this month. Can't believe how quickly it has come around :-(
I was wondering if there's anything I could do to prepare it for the diesel emisions test. I was thinking perhaps of taking it for a hard drive the night before. Do you think changing the oil might help? What about a fuel additive? And do the garages still rev the living daylights out of the poor engine to test it?

Ian (Cape Town)

I would expect a 3 year old car to sail through
unless abused or neglected.

...and therein lies the problem.
Many cars are used to pootle down to the shops and back, never get a decent warm-it-up-to-proper-temperature run, and generally get lazy.
I know my daily commute sees me seldom getting above 60km/h (or 2000 revs) over the 20km distance, and as a result when the car gets a good burn up the motorway, at 120km/h*, after 100 kms, the difference in performance is quite noticable.
The old dear's Daihatsu three potter gets a suitable run weekly, when my father takes it in to work - 30ks on the motorway - to 'blasty out he cobwebs, as he puts it... othewise it would have coked up by now, I'm sure!

* - local speed limit. I'm saying 120 to avoid self-incrimination!

Don't normally like to give away the secrets that make life in the North East so much better than in the South but I've recently had to drive from Sunderland to Carlisle and back a lot and have discovered the joys of the old military road along Hadrian's Wall.
This runs parallel to the A69 and is mostly dead straight with some "big dipper" style dips and some fun bends which are mainly covered in mud at this time of the year to add to the excitement.
Very little traffic, no speed cameras and the traffic police are much more interested in the the A69 (in fact my bro, who is in the know, tells me they now only have 2 "jam sandwiches" and their unmarked car has been taken off them).
Do give it a try but only if you stick to 40 mph so that when I come along I can overtake you more easily. Read more
