The 1.6 TDCi Fiesta is the same Ford/PSA engine as the C-Max, Focus etc though only 90 bhp in the Fiesta IIRC, it is a fairly refined unit in the Focus / C-Max, much more refined that the older 1.4 though no better that the mechanically older 8v 1.8 also fitted to the C-Max / Focus which is also a lot more torquey. Reckon the Renault 1.5 is still the most refined smaller diesel.
I am seriously thinking about buying a new VW Golf Match 1.9TDI for my wife. We visited the VW dealer on Saturday and he said the best deal he could do for us is £15,265, which represents £620 off the list price. This price would be the same if we registered the car in January 07 or March 07 (for the new 07 plate).
Drivethedeal.com are advertising the same car for £14,301, which is basically £1,000 cheaper than my local dealer.
I know that if I purchased the car from drivethedeal.com, it would come from a VW dealer anywhere in the country and have the same 3 year manufacturers warranty. However, I am concerned that in the event of a warranty claim (either minor or major) I would be treated better by my local main dealer if I had purchased the car from them.
In what cases would I have to refer warranty issues back to the supplying dealer?
Can anybody give me any advice on this please? What would you do?

If you go through a broker such as drivethedeal, as I did (although didn't use them in particular), one of the options available to you to finance it is PCP.
It looks like an attractive option, depending on what you want from a car, but I wasn't sufficiently aware of the pitfalls before I signed up. If he's considering buying a VW / Honda or any other brand, then unless he is sure that he knows what he wants from it, I'd caution against using this type of finance.
Unlike many BRs, I've got nothing against VW, and my comment had nothing to do with them in particular.
I have been getting rid of a few tonnes of earth dug out from trenches on my property and I have a friendly arrangement with a gent who is slowly landscaping his garden and fields, i.e. I want rid of earth/rubble etc, he wants, so I take it there and dump it, he then levels it using his mini digger.
A couple of days ago I dumped a couple of loads over a new septic tank he's installed. Although the ground is reletively flat it was extremely wet. I did get sort of stuck, as the weight in the trailer had ensured that its wheels sunk into the mud when I reversed over some soft ground. I got around this problem by emptying the trailer and then using a'rocking motion and tickover with low ratio diff lock on to climb out of the rut I had created. The earth was in the place it was needed anyway.
Today I thought "I don't want to get stuck so I'll tip this last load in another area that he can live with. This is a mainly hard area that he is widening and levelling off. When I spoke to him a couple of days ago he indicated that he could use the earth in a different position if it suited me better but was quite particular that he didn't want it too close to some rubble in the same area.
I tried my damndest to back the trailer into the correct position to tip but couldn't quite make it, so I stupidly manuvred into an area that I knew could give me problems. I tipped the load, hopng that the reduced weight would enable disco to pull herself out of yet another rut.
It was then I realised that I had just driven onto a new area of this level that wasn't there a few months ago. It was as soft as hell. I eventually gave up when the drivers side step was level with the ground. The vehicle was listing at a devistating angle and no amount of tickover or revving was going to help. One wheel on each axle had completely lost the will to grip, despite my efforts in digging them out and filling the ruts with hardcore. In addition I had a wonderful view of a steep bank on the drivers side that the vehicle was leaning towards. Oh for a TD5 with traction control!
I eventually found a phone (mobile is in for repair again) and contacted Chris, the local garage owner who came out some 15 mins later in his Series 3 Discovery. After laughing and taking photos that he has assured me will be posted around the village, eased all of us out of our little predicament. I did get the impression that Chris, who has a very dry sense of humour, very much enjoyed the spectacle. He waited until I was sitting in the disco before taking the photos, so there was absolutely no dispute who wa behind the wheel. In due course I'm sure I can make a photo available to you all;)
The moral of the story. The disco will indeed go anyhere, just don't expect it to get back anytime soon! Read more
My 2001 Shogun has a rear locking Diff as standard.
i have a citroen xsara 90hp hdi estate and between 2000 and 3000 rpm under load the car ticks. I thought it may be the crankshaft pulley bu last week i did a full major service which included new cambelt, water pump, cambelt pulleys and crankshaft balancer pulley and the noise is still there the noise completely dissapears when you gat to 3000 rpm like turning of a switch does anyone have any ideas what the noise could be? Coule it be the fuel pump or noisy injectors?

I remember this from my 306. Only done 60,000 miles too.
Lately I've been aware of a graunchy creaking noise when I go over sleeping policemen or similar humps. I assume that it's the front suspension although I can't reproduce the noise by leaning on the front of the car. I guess I'll have to take to the local garage but I thought I'd check with you guys first to see what maybe the problem. As a retired bloke I hope it's not going to be an arm and a leg job! Read more

P.S. The two plastic water pipe connections that fit onto the cylinder head will need replacing when they start to leak. Just replacing the O rings does not work.
Ok then people what do we know about Smart Roadsters - in particular the more highly strung (?) Brabus tunned versions?
I ask as a friend has recently got one and i'm sure I read somewhere that they were not that reliable (no info on warranty direct reliabilty site though) and that servicing is both short and expensive.

I heard that someone had a non-power steering vehicle converted to power steeering for not much money.Is this an easy/cheap conversion?If it is,am hoping to change a Vauxhall Corsa to power steering.

Check that there may be other less obvious mechanical differences. Cars I know that have had manual and PAS options have sometimes needed:
engine end bearer plate swapping, because of provision for the pump mounting, different suspension components to change the caster angle, different track rod ends, or repositioning of other components in the engine bay to make way for the steering pump or reservoir.
