Wully Bully

I've got a diesel 406 HDI, 2000cc, Y reg, 170,000 miles, that my wife drives during the week while I use a van for work. About three months ago I heard a loud `clicking' from the engine that we isolated to when the air con was engaged. I took the car to the guy that does our MOT's, his advice was that we needed a new compressor "run it till it breaks properly(!) then replace it". We have run the car for a bit longer without the aircon switched on (it always seemed to default to on when we switched on the ignition, and then we had to switch it off), but now we have the noise continuously, air con on or off. Does anybody know what the noise is, and what is the easiest (and cheapest) way to fix it? I was hoping that it was the electric clutch on the drive pulley and could be replaced, but the MOT guy says it's comming from inside the compressor Read more

Try timing the engine up & locking it off with the timing hole in the bottom pulley, If the bottom timing hole doesnt line up you know the pulley bonding is worn out

Sounds a lot like the harmonic damper is on its way out to me.

Check your handbook to identify the window fuse for that year; there are many variations - might be 18 or 22? [30 amp; around the middle of the bottom row. There could even be a windows fusible link near the battery too.]

It should be live with the ignition on, as should the black/yellow wires on to the window switches. If neither are; suspect a fusebox issue, or [if fitted] the previously mentioned door-open interlock relay. [Any sign of water ingress on to the fusebox?]

I am thinking of buying a Subaru estate car. It would be either a Legacy estate or a Forester estate, about 2003 version for about £9000. Can anyone say much about the difference between these two cars and which would be best. I have three teenage children so I need room in the back. Read more

I have recently changed from a Legacy 2.0L auto to an Outback 2.5L auto. The different revolutions / torque characteristic of the 2.5L engine make it a much easier task to reverse up my garden path. The path is steep and narrow, with the house wall on the driver's side and a low wall over a drop on the other; very unforgiving if you get it wrong. The Legacy needed very careful throttle, and even then was jerky because the slope varies. The Outback is much closer in performance to my 3 litre Wolseley, which does it a smoothly as silk.
Now that I can do it in daylight I will fit additional reversing lights so that I feel safer in the dark. The existing reversing light, only one, is too high, unfocussed, and shines everywhere but where it is needed.

Hi

I could really use some knowlegible advice on a faulty car I have.
The car is 2003 Mondeo. It was brought from my cousin who had it from new, now it has 74000 miles on the meter but always serviced by Ford.

Two months ago it ran really bad and I took it to the dealer. They said the injector was bad and needed recoding, they also said the software needed upgrading (I thought only computers needed upgrading). This cost £120 because the Mondeo has too many miles to be within the warranty.
The car ran better for a while but then started its tricks again, like really rough running and knocking, like a bag of bolts.
I went back to the dealer with it and they said it had a faulty injector, so I asked them to replace the injector. This cost £393.
Again the car ran ok for a time but then started running really bad and knocking. Last week they collected the car and now they have examined it and told me that one of the con rods is a bit bent. I will have to pay for a new engine or the old one to be disassembled and rebuilt with new parts for several thousand pounds. I would be interested if anyone can say how this can happen, since the car use to run perfectly and only Ford dealers have worked on the car. Has anyone else had this trouble? Information would be welcome. Read more

A colleague has a diesel X-Type. He's had more problems than any one I know including 6 fuel leaks in various parts of the injection system and one failed EGR valve. The only thing he's better off from is it's a Jag and the courtesy cars are Jag's too. He's had the dealer principles XJR, an XJ and a few X-types.

Cheddar you're right that there are so many fewer we don't hear about it the same. But hasn't it been mentioned before - isn't the engine in the Transit almost identical (made on the same production lines in Dagenham) and we don't hear much about them failing. And there's loads of them.

Does anyone use these for their kids on long drives and do they make them feel sick?

And worse of all they damaged the air bag.

Passat PDI 100 just got through the MOT with an emissions reading of 0.21. Is that good?

The advisory this year was that front discs were slightly worn- well yes it has done 89,000 miles.

Last year another garage insisted I replace a CV joint gaiter and said the other was on its way out , plus low brake fluid and rusty brake pipes. As the brake fluid was on max I ignored them. And no mention this year.
I guess the main dealer was happy enough getting me to pay for a new radiator and other work.

Sure this has been raised before!

My 1989 BX GTI 1900 cc has an annoying rattle when driven from the front o/s. It is more obvious when decelerating. 2 garages have checked and can find no obvious cause ie ball joints/ track rod ends are fine. Any ideas? Read more

Ahhhh the good old offside driveshaft housing & bearing.

About £36 new from the dealer for the alloy housing with rubber mount, No idea on the bearing cost never had to replace one yet.

Turn the 2 x bolt head 180 degrees so the bearing will slide out with the driveshaft, Also dont undo the housings bolts until the driveshaft & bearing are removed, If you do take the housing bolts out first you will be there for hours struggling.

Last one I did on a 405 the bearing was spinning in the housing because it was so worn.

Against my better judgement, I've had my arm twisted in to servicing a KA for a friend of SWMBO.

I'm ready for some plug snapping fun!, but I don't know what clearance the tappets should be set to. Please could someone who has a manual post the clearances?

It's an X reg 1.3. The car has had a hard life, and I'm expecting to find all sorts of problems with it - I suspect there may be a few more questions posted from me about the issues I find wrong with the car over the next few days!

Thanks,

>>The quality of the fasteners used on the Ka's oily bits is a disgrace.

Yes, not impressive - even the screws holding the two halves of the air-filter box together had rusted badly - thankfully I got them out, and found some suitable replacements in one of my many old tin boxes of bits and pieces.
