Hi
My mercedes sprinter is overheating. There is a new radiator fitted, and the coolant level is full.
Initially the water was boiling out of the radiator. I filled it up and tried to bleed it...... Got lots of air coming up. Within 4 miles the van starts to overheat. With the radiator cap off and engine running nothing seems to happen. I thought I would have seen the water moving. If I feel the pipe I can't feel any water flowing.
The fan is working ok, and there is no water in the oil.
Can anyone help?

I think I would be looking at a head problem ie gasket gone.
Some of my relatives are retiring to France and will be needing a brand new LHD car. They have already decided on the make and model (which will be French by the way} but could do with some advice. Can UK based dealers/brokers obtain LHD models and would they be cheaper than buying one in France? Do new car brokers exist in France or are they unique to the UK? Are cars generally cheaper in France than over here? Read more
I find it much safer to drive a LHD car on the continent. No problems with seeing whats coming at roundabout and when overtaking etc. Personally i get used to it within an hour, only problem is finding the handbrake sometimes!
Whilst flicking through the DSA magazine (dad gets it being a driving instructor) I noticed that the success or not of Pass Plus is currently being questioned. One incentive for new drivers to take the test is the possibility of securing lower insurance rates, but research is finding that Pass Plus drivers have just as many 'own fault' insurance claims as non Pass Plus drivers. If this trend continues expect insurance companies to stop offering discounts.

All three of my teenagers have been through the pass plus system. None of them did the full whack of hours. One of them did just 2 hours local motorways then was told they'd passed. Unfortunately it's another system that is wide open to abuse. The instructor gets loadsa dosh; the teenagers get the insurance benefit so both parties will benefit from it not being done properly. No-one will blow the whistle. Sad but true.
My father died recently and his car was insured fully comp for himself with me as the only named driver (my mother doesn't drive and I don't have any siblings)
I own 2 other cars in my name that are both insured fully comp with protected no claims bonus.
I intend to keep my other 2 cars and his car as it is better than both of mine.
Could I continue to drive on his insurance until the policy is due for renewal?
I guess that I could, but, if I had to make a claim, I could be in trouble for not informing the insurance company of his death and they would refuse to pay out on these grounds.
Does anybody have experience of such matters? Read more
Thank you for the sympathy and for the advice.
I am going to keep both cars for the time being and proceed as follows:
Inform my fathers insurance compny.
Transfer my insurance from my car (1999 Rover 414) to my fathers (2004 Skoda Fabia1.4)
My son who drives a Corsa wants a bigger car so he may take the Rover and sell his Corsa.
If not, I will SORN the Rover (as it isn't worth that much and unlikely to depreciate much more) until we have sorted things out.
I will be looking for a replacement vehicle in the next few months.
I want to buy a dual fuel vehicle with a factory fitted LPG system. I want to attend a few auctions and see what availability and roughly what price they fetch, ideally the vehicle will be not more than 3 years old.
I live in the Thames Valley , can anyone suggest which auctions to attend ?
Secondly, would it be worthwhile to subscribe to BCA Auction View ? Read more
You might try www.woma.co.uk & check out their Police sales - BCA & Manheim also sell Police stockhem too - as quite a number of Constabulary fleet run them.
& the Protons from the North East forces were available for £400 ish - but better to find a Vauxhall Astra.

I remember roads similar to these in Malaisia some 32 years ago. My dad worked in Kuala Lumpa and we used to holiday in Penang. Usual mode of travel was by road.
Everyone just took it carefully.
In HJ's column last week, HJ described how to get rid of smell in the car as below. Did he mean white malt vinegar or coloured?
First use bicarbonate of soda to get rid of the bacteria, then leave open bowls of malt vinegar in the car and boot overnight. This may read like an old wives' tale (and may well be one) but apparently it gets rid of the smell. Read more

Sorry to hear that you've still got a problem. I'm afraid I don't have enough technical knowledge but would assume that the cv joint was checked at the same time that the new drive shaft was fitted.
