I would guess the most likely problem is the connector to the pre-tentioners on the seats, have a look under and check they are fully home.

The only way to remove the fault code is to have the car plugged into the VAG-com system at the dealers though.

Agree you need to get access to a diag tool to sort this - Im told it goes off after being fixed and 50 drive cycles - but thats a bit of a pain. Vagcom is an excellent product for any vag owner. look for ross-tech on the web. An old version of the software (3.11)is freeware/shareware and can be used with cheap cables from ebay. various vw web forums keep lists of people who have vag com and are prepared to help out by letting you use theirs for a beer token.

3 likely issues - if you get the codes read it will tell you what the exact problem is

1: wires/connectors under seat (does it have in-seat side air bags?).
2: wires in passenger footwell (had any leaks?).
3: wires in steering wheel behind bag.

obviously dont play with air bags while the battery is connected.

Well we have decided to remove the steering wheel and have a look. Audi dealer said it is airbag control unit

Cant get the sodding thing off, there are two what seem like allen screws at the rear of the wheel, are these to remove the airbag cover?

ANy help greately appreciated.

Thanx

If the airbag control unit is faulty, there is no point in removing the drivers airbag and steering wheel. The control unit is bolted to the floor below the heater unit.Btw the drivers airbag is secured to the steering wheel by 2 x 30 torx screws.I would be very carefull when dealing with airbag circuits unless you are totally confident that the correct procedures are being used.

As elekie says. Pointless to remove the airbag.
Do you know the error code ?

Did anything happen before the light came on? Vag had a batch of faulty airbag controllers that might have been around 96. Any attempt to use diagnostics on them breaks them and the light stays on. Get the part number off the controller and hit the scrappies / vag forums.

Not sure off hand - but you might need to reprogram it to set the details of what airbags you have. (seats?)

the fault normaly is caused by the component between the steering wheel and the steering column dont go trying to test with a test light or a meter or you could end up in casualty air bags are very very dangerous have it checked by a specialist it is interogatable and repairable part usually about £90 ish
