October 2006
Just limped home in 2nd gear after driving HDi Citroen Synergie 2000 W reg (96,000 miles) - up hill with 4 occupants - car was working hard at 70mph approx - sudden loss of power felt through throttle pedal, and smoke out back. Had to pull in, down to very low power, only able to do very low speeds. Not overheating, no oil leaks, auxilliary belt still on when I looked under bonnet, all electrics fine, no warning lights on. It only just made it home, I was hardly touching the throttle and was able to freewheel a lot thank God, but very little power.
Any ideas? Feels expensive. Is the cambelt hidden behind a cover? Could it have suddenley given up? Was due for renewal at 100k. Anything else it could be? I am rather concerned to say the least. Bought the car 05/09/2006 from small dealer. Will I have comeback if it's major? Am thinking cambelt (what are the signs?). Or Turbo? Or could it be anything simple (unlikely if big cloud of smoke!) I stopped behind the a British Gas Vauxhall Combo van at traffic lights today and noticed a sticker on one of the rear doors showing a red circle with black '70' lettering in the centre accompanied by wording similar to 'limited to 70mph'.
After doing a quick 'Google' search, it seems that all 3,500 light vans brought into service this year in the Centrica fleet will be fitted with these 70mph limiters.
I bet that's annoyed quite a few of their fitters, for the wrong reasons of course... Read more
Just because the Americans do it doesn't lend it any credibility or merit. They have more than their fair share of bad ideas.
Against my better judgement my father let the garage change the worn original fitment Dunlops on his 2001 Astra for a couple of Aurora tyres. Haven't previously heard of them before, and google doesn't throw too much up about them, neither does a forum search.
The only answer I could get from my father was that they were cheap ( < £40 a corner fitted ) and the garage said that they fit quite a few of them to various cars. Until I get around to driving his Astra I couldn't possibly comment on how good or bad they are. But, I have a nasty suspicion they won't be as good as the Dunlops that were previously on there.

I'm guess that Aurora is a sub-brand of Hankook and when Hankook have moved on to their next generation of tyres the moulds etc from the older generation are retained and used to produce 'Aurora' tyres. Many tyre manufacturers use this technique.

...on cars these days? I'm certain we have discussed this before, but I would like to offer the following sorry tale as a caution to others.
The Mondeo has popped its offside sidelight bulb. Now, I am the sort of sad person who cannot stand to have lights out, even little ones, and was becoming maddened by seeing an odd number of lights reflected off the back of cars in front of me in traffic.
So, the day being clear, the sky being bright (sort of) and Mrs B needing peace and quiet for an hour or so, I strapped B Junior into his pushchair and walked the half-mile or so to my local Halfords, bought a twin-pack of suitable bulbs, and returned home to have a crack at fitting one. I am reasonably competent at taking things to bits, fixing them and putting them together again, and I thought "Can't be that difficult, there are instructions in the handbook ..."
...which turned out to be as much use as something that really isn't very useful at all. On the current model Mondeo it is apparently necessary to lift out the entire headlight assembly in order to change any of the bulbs inside. In order to do that you have to move the grille out of the way.
Trouble is, they don't seem to have updated the instructions since the facelifted model came out in '04, and of course the old model has a slightly different design of grille, so I damn near broke the thing trying to move it out of the way. Not clever. Anyway, after about 15 minutes of fiddling and swearing, I got the headlight assembly out, and removed the cover for the sidelight bulb holder - only to find that the wire has been cut so short that I couldn't get the bulb out anyway.
It then took another 20 minutes to get everything back together again, and given that the idea with all this rigmarole is clearly to make me take it to the dealer and pay them to do it for me, thus ensuring an income stream for them, I suppose I am now looking at a bill of around £50 to replace a pathetic little bulb costing just over a quid, which is ridiculous.
What particularly annoys me is that I had to do the same job on a '95 Punto SX about eight years ago and the whole process from opening bonnet to going indoors with the empty bulb packet and putting it in the bin took less than ten minutes. Heaven help me if one of the Mondy's foglight bulbs ever goes (not that I use the foglights much, if at all) - it said in the handbook "Consult your dealer", which given my experience above, probably means that the bumper has to come off... Leif,
1. JC would get frustrated and take a very large hammer to it, the floppy haired one would take forever and possibly get the job done, the hamster would take it into Halfords and get them to do it for him.
2. this is why we need a motoring programme on BBC, as well as Top Gear.

This morning I parked in a public car park alongside another parent's Seat Ibiza whilst I dropped my daughter off at school. When I returned the lady was looking shocked as her rear screen had shattered in the few minutes I had been away from my car. She thought someone had backed into her car and driven off.
Whilst she was on the phone to her husband, another lady said she heard a noise and looked round to see some glass dropping. No other car was involved or close by. Very strange as this is a busy car park only for a short few minutes in the morning and afternoon.
Whilst chatting to the lady on the phone and relaying the second lady's comments, I think we found out how the glass broke. In the car park is a small pot hole with a few stones scattered on the tarmac. One stone was propelled sideways as a car left the car park and hit the rear of another car with quite a bang.
It is probable that the same happened a few minutes earlier and shattered the rear screen. No stone was found in the car or on the ground, so this is our only idea of how it might have happened. I was surprised that the Seat's glass was only about 2.5 to 3mm thick, but it did shatter into mainly small safe chuncks.
Does anyone know of any other way the glass could have broken?

Raining Datsun cogs?
Hello Guys and Girls
I'm having trouble finding out much information on this car and they look very good value for money second hand.
Does anyone have any comments to make, are the expensive to service?, are they thirsty? are they fun the drive?
I have found out that they were built in the USA and I think they are 200BHP with a 0-60 in around 7.5 seconds and they are all autos.
I'm guessing it will be more of a grand tourer than anything?
Thanks you for any input :) Read more

With winter coming up I'm tempted to give a car battery a little overnight charging boost to help it over any cold spell. Can I do this while the battery is still connected to the car (and all the car's electronics) or do I have to disconnect it first? Read more
20 year old charger?I bought mine from Marble Arch Motor Supplies(anyone else remember them?)in the late 50's;it still works well but I agree that with modern batteries and charging systems, you should have no concerns;as Yorkie says, once you start to get trouble, buy a new battery. My 7yr. old battery on my diesel Escort still starts it easily despite only being used on average every couple of weeks.
Hi all - posting here at very short notice to try and harvest any useful suggestions to this situation!!
My wife's 2005 Mondeo ST TDCi 2.2 broke down on friday in the pouring rain. Only just 10,000 miles on the clock. I thought it was the fuel pump as did the AA man.
Today the Ford dealer has called to say that water contamination in the diesel has caused the fuel pump to break down and pass metal filings into the fuel system.
The implication is that the diesel she filled up with 200 miles ago, contained water (no mention of a larger problem caused by the monsoon-like weather here last week). As such, this is NOT covered by warranty.
I am now facing a £2000.00 plus bill (yes - the decimal point is in the right place - two thousand pounds!!) and I need to give them the 'go' tomorrow.
I am utter past myself. Its going to be a big chunk of money out of my pocket for a problem that I am not entirely convinced will not happen again in another month - for which Ford will take ANOTHER £2000 off me!
Has anyone heard of this problem before?
I am seriously depressed at this stage!
Many thanks for any helpful comments.

Does anyone know which Rovers have got Honda engines/gearboxes? I bought a Pug 106 recently and the car is nothing but a nightmare and I'm planning to get rid of it. Need a cheap small reliable car for everyday use and mainly for my pizza deliveries job. I want a car with 1400cc or a smaller engine. I've seen quite a few very cheap Rovers on autotrader but I don't want to a buy one with Rover engine because of head gasket issues. Could you please let me know which small rovers have got Honda engines, gearboxes etc..? Many Thanks Read more
>> I know personally of no less than 7 people with
Rover
>> 1.4s which had HGF. Given that I only knew 8
people
>> with Rover 1.4s, that's a scary percentage.
I'm fairly certain it's all K-series engines. I know of people
with 1.4 and 1.8 litre cars who've had HG problems. But....I
also know a mechanic who owns a Rover 25, looks after
it properly (coolant changes etc) and hasn't had any engine problems.
Coincidence?
Its not a coincidence - ive known cars serviced religiously at a main Rover dealer do well over 100k with no HGF issues BUT they were well service by supplying dealer all their life.
I suspect that the K-series is simply a weak design that needs looking after properly with correct fluids and intervals.
What with all the issues with Rover, its no suprise that many fell out of the dealer network thus leading creating a snowball effect thats hard to undo.
I had a 214 with K-series and ran it to 125k with no probs, but then Im a pedantic car owner who over services his cars and I bought a car that I knew the history of from new.
This sounds all a bit similar to my Citroen Dispatch HDi (based on the Synergie). Mine had variable amounts of power, and no low end torque / top end power.
It was checked and the ECU showed up a faulty Air Mass Meter. I replaced this, but it was still sometimes iffy. Then the fuel pump leaked and left me stranded in the fens coming back from a race (complete with trailer and race car attached).
I had a new pump fitted, new cambelt etc etc, and it is better, but not perfect. A friend uses the van in the week (I only use it as race support), and after he'd had it a few weeks I got it back for a race weekend. It was very sluggish, and manovering around on the drive to line up with trailer it kept bogging down, then blowing out black smoke. This lasted until I gave it a good blast.
My main concern is that sometimes it lacks power on full throttle (no smoke), but as I release throttle, it picks up?? Its done 130k miles.
