I saw from an advert in the paper today that the new Transit is available in Front Wheel Drive or Rear Wheel Drive.

I have never heard of a vehicle being offered with these alternatives, has there been any others? Is this an example of how the Transit really is just a chassis that you can build whatever you want to onto in the way of engine, drive and bodystyle? Read more

Triumph Dolomite / 1500 / Toledo - which all ended up being called Dolomites I think.

The Toledo was RWD - the 1500 was FWD - the Dolomite and Sprint were RWD.

Can anyone remind me the name of the explicit, gritty French ( with English sub titles ) tough cop drama that showed late on TV earlier this year?

I am so naive, so simple in my view of life. Do people really borrow money for a house and rely on some other poor soul popping their clogs to pay it off. I've heard of live now and pay later, but hey.....

Recently started having problems with the electrical supply. When I turn the ignition on the rev counter dial and speedo judder anti-clockwise from zero and the engine won't turn over, then the alarm starts, after leaving for a time, the engine just about turns over and starts.

No problems for about three months then, the fault happend again, in the morning, attempted to bump start the car down a hill, no good, called out a breakdown firm, who jump started the car battery, pulled up at my house switched off and started no problems

So, I replaced the car battery with a new Varta one, high crank output, last night, drove to work for a good hour travelling time and noticed the dash lights started to dim and the radio, switched itself on/off/on/off etc, so in the stupidity of me, I pulled over in the middle of nowhere and turned the engine off and stereo to recetify/reset the problem, turned key to start, battery flat, dash instruments filkering and alarm sounding.

Luckily left for two mins and there was enough power to start the car and drove to work.

At work got a torch to see what the battery indicator was showing (nothing) started and turned off the car three to four times no problems and the following morning, started first time?

Well, thanks to the people who replied, I think i have rectified the problem. Yesterday I bough a volt meter and tested the battery, which is brand new, the reading was 12.5 v. The wife started the engine and on idle was 13.5v and with everything on the readings were 12.7v.

She increased the revs and held at two thousand rpm and tried to get a reading and the cable from the positive terminal was red hot, couldn't touch it, so I went to Vauxhall to try and get a clamp for the positive terminal, they couldn't help and said a new wiring loom would cost over a hundred quid.

So i went to the local motor factors and pick up a terminal, cut the wires on the positive end and attached to the battery, know with everything on the wire doesn't get hot and when revved gives a reading of 14v so the alternator is working.

went for a drive today and turned the engine off, the battery was at 13v

Thanks for the help,

Nick.

I am considering buying (amongst other things eg Lexus GS450h) a 335d saloon to replace my 5 year old MB C320.

Question I have is around servicing.

BMW offer Service Inclusive - full cost item is £1375 for 5 years or 60k miles (60k miles would apply to me as I have averaged 18k per year over last 5) and includes all services + brake pads / disks for the applicable period.

BMW have moved to condition based servicing so I assume that primarily motorway miles may generate service intervals of 20k or so (please correct me if I am wrong with this estimate).

This means that I would have 3 services in the service inclusive period and 60k miles. Can anyone advise if the package is worth it under those circumstances?

I am generally aware of premium service costs after running the MB since new and do have memories of £600 service bills when pads / disks were needing changed but I'm struggling to work out the numbers with the BMW deal.

Any advice welcome... Read more

So the question becomes is £695 a bargain for 60K worth
of BMW servicing and is £680 a bargain to cover brake
pads / discs and wiper blade rubbers? If the answers are
yes to both then the Service and Maintenance pack is the
one to go for.

Even if it isn't a bargain, it's there or thereabouts, so it's not as if you're losing anything. Is it transferable if you sell the car? I would imagine it is.

For your typical motorway use, you might be quite light on pads & disks, but I would imagine that many 335d (auto) user's would absolutely eat them, and for them it really would be a no-brainer. I would go for it.

Sorry for the lack of time to answer this but my son and I are going to look at a Clio tomorow for his first car. It is a 2002 1.2 16v with 50,000 miles. It is being sold to us at a good price as my son goes to school with the car dealers son.
Having just checked the C by C breakdown it appears that a timing belt change would probably be a good idea. The car dealer has his own garage facilities so he may offer to do it, or it may be best to keep the deal simple and have it done at a local independant.
Thanks in advance.

I'm in the process of saving for a cheap Robin car, three-wheeler.
Have been told I can drive one on a provisional.
Are there any driving instructors in the UK that teach in Robins?

I think we've just found some Top Gear 'sketch' ideas:

Clarkson in a Reliant Robin. That on its own would be a laugh.

Hammond attempting the (3 wheeler) land speed record in a Robin Reliant.

Or maybe just dropping one from a crane c.f. a caravan.

I have a Citroen C5 2.2 HDI 2001 Manual 74000 miles, I am sure i read somewhere that the cambelt needs changing at 100000 miles or 5 years whatever comes first, but i have called five different Citroen dealers and some said it doesn't matter about the time scale but should be changed at 100000 miles, some said it was 100000 miles or 10 years on the HDI engine and another one said best to have it changed now plus tensioners at 74000 miles. What do i do?? If the dealers don't know what chance have i got?? Please Help!! Thanks..... Read more

Is this a very similar Q to one on "Discussion"?? {It is, but now removed to prevent repetiveness of answers - DD}
Here's a similar reply!!
Our 2000 reg Xantia HDi handbook says every 100,000 miles. We got it done at 72,000 - car was 5 years old. Better safe than sorry, and since it is unlikely to need doing twice on a car (will you still have the car at 150k or 200k?) you might as well get it done early. If ours is still going strong at 144k it will deserve another cambelt - though I suspect the cost would be more than the value of the car.

Hi Guys

Just picked up a 55 Focus Zetec Climate with almost 10000 miles on the clock. Driving home from the dealers I noticed a loud continuous creaking sound from the steering when turning the wheel.
This happens usually at low speed e.g. parking/reversing and the noise is present when I turn the wheel either slightly or full lock to lock.
Its especially loud when the car has been stood overnight and I am driving it from cold the next morning.
The dealer (indepenent, not Ford) have "lubed all the bushes/joints" etc but basically this has had no effect.

I am thinking its the rack and its off to a Ford dealer tomorrow to be looked at under warranty.

Any of you tech guys able to suggest what it could be?

Thanks in advance - I'll let you know what Ford say tomorrow.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies so far. Ford had the car in again yesterday and managed to put a crack in the windscreen for free :o/ - they are replacing it today.
Steering noise (continuous creaking when wheel is turned) is still there despite the tie rod ends and shock mount being replaced. They replaced the road wheel too. They have suggesting letting one of their lads re - cover the drivers seat in the workshop - something I wasn't really confident in them doing......

Anyway I have been back to the supplying dealer (the independant I bought the car from) who have offered me an exchange vehicle for equal or greater value with a full refund on the price of the Focus which I think is very decent of them.

Off to choose a different car this weekend :o)

Vin {P}

The new Jag's got a minor (!) problem. The airbag light is flashing an error code. A bit of internet trawling tells me it's flashing error code "19", but not what this might mean (except that on a Ford Taurus - same diagnostics possibly? it's a passenger seatbelt sensor)

Anyone on here know what this code represents or where I can find this info?

Thanks,

It may not have been subject to an insurance claim eg. it was only covered third party its bit of a loophole that allows many unsafe cars back on the road .
