can anybody tell me where on the v5 does it say (if it says) that the vehicle has been previously damaged.

if its a cat a b or c and it was put back on the road after the vic test came in and was flagged as such by the dvla and needed a vic check (i assume we are talking car?) then it is on the front page bottom left of the v5.
If it is cat d there is no marker on the v5

And if it has been heftily damaged but repaired and paid for by an owner or insurance company then there will be no available record at all.
And if it's a bike and written off, then there is a steadily increasing chance of it being an unrecorded cat X (to keep salvage prices up!)

I purchased the vehicle as damaged applied for the v5 and it has come back with no mention of accident damage.

It may not have been subject to an insurance claim eg. it was only covered third party its bit of a loophole that allows many unsafe cars back on the road .
