Hi guys,

Can anyone shed any light on the probable source of cars in HBOS sales at BCA?

Are they ex-lease properly maintained stuff? Or bodged nasty finance reposessions?

Spotted a 5 year old 'prestige' vehicle with no previous owners and 6 figure mileage in an upcoming sale, wondering what its history might have been - I'm sorely tempted if it was simply a lease car they had for 5 years etc etc. It has FSH..

As usual with auctionview, details on spec etc are sketchy so all I have is the reg, no idea whether its a high or low spec example, dont suppose there is any way of finding out either? Read more

I'm not actually attending myself - I have Joe Dowd on the lookout for me.

Couple of days ago delivering mail i followed two Hampshire County Council fiesta vans.
Both had short (@3 foot) masts on their roof and on the top what looked like a C.C.T.V. camera.
The front one's camera was pointing backwards and the rear one's camera was pointing forwards.
Both kept at 40mph and seemed to be trying to keep a set distance of about 20 to 30 feet.
What were they doing ??. Read more

Pretty sure they are used by Community Support Officers

Don't think the cameras would have been doing anything whilst travelling, direction they were pointing in of no relevance, distance apart would have been sensible for the speed

When ready to change cars, how high up the list is the syle/look of the car that you are considering.
I am finding that I start with the appearance and then look at other considerations. How about you? Read more

There is an unknown formula which decided whether I'd even want to own a car in the first place, never mind how high on my list it would be, which definitely includes looks, so it is very important.
It is almost indefinable, but includes looks, performance, 'unusuality', style (which is generally entangled with the looks, but not always), and of course 'it'.
The vagueness of this formula probably explains why my short list for next car currently contains some very disparate cars (Alfa 156 GTA, Mitsubishi Galant VR4, Volvo S60R, etc.) and keeps growing.

But yes, looks are a very important part of it. I'd hate to drive just another Eurobox. I want a car which, when I walk across a car-park towards it, makes me smile.

Can you believe this?

This seems to be the only chance to voice your opinion regarding alternative fuels, specifically 'straight' and waste non-processed vegetable oil.

I am sad I know but have been investigating winter tires - have been considering getting a set of Michelin Alpin but they cost a fair bit and of course I would probably be better off getting them fitted on a spare set of wheels.

I have read the Michelin sales blurb and they claim that at 7 degrees C or less the performance is much improved on conventional summer tires ( I currently have Michelin Pilot Primacy on my Mondeo Estate) whilst lifetime cost is no more as you are wearing two sets of tires.

Any one had any experiance of switching tires for the winter ?

PS I live in West Yorkshire - we haven't had much snow in recent years but when we do its chaos !!

PPS Have also been reading about SnowSock - a textile sock you slip over the driven wheels when it snows -anybody have any of these ?

Thanks

RB, the clever so-and-so wouldn't be on the roads in the first place.

I guess the main thing here is if someone really feels they need winter tyres because they live or drive in the hills and/or mountains etc. then there is certain a place for them. Their overall performance can be compared to those of F1 tyres, great when the weather is within range of their spec, not so good otherwise.

As for which all weather tyre is the best, well each of us will choose a tyre based on the information we have available to us etc. I'd always go for wet braking/control as the first priority and sling anything with less than 4mm of tread.

There has been some recent publicity concerning the DVLA's supplying of vehicle keepers' addresses to various bodies, including debt collection agencies, car park operators and the like. Is it possible for a private individual to access this information? If so, how? Read more

You only have to tell them you think they ran into your car and drove off, pay the fee, and it's yours.

That's why I register my vehicles to a different address.

In a car park today, I saw a rather handsome Mercedes (silver of course) model **55 AMG (can't be sure what the prefix letters were - may be EL or CL? Anyway the number plate comprised the letter M followed by 17, then two R's and finally a letter C - you can see where this is going?

However the seven was a sort of anglisized (sp) version of the continental seven but was vertical rather than sloping and the horizonal strike-through was done just so it almost touched the adjacent 1. The net result from a moderate distance was such that it looked like MARRC - difficult to show on a keyboard but write them down in sequence and M17RRC becomes the above if you mangle a contintental 7 accordingly.........God, what a bore am I?

In an accident or fracas I wouldn't be sure, unless studied, what the Registration number was.

Reminds me of the tourist in the backwoods of Ireland who was astonished to see this gorgeous top-of-the range Ferrari in a small village. Right by it was a Garda who , when it was pointed out that the car didn't have any plates commented, 'So you think we don't know whose it is"!

How can i find a 1930 car that is not on the DVLA motor base if i have its registration number. It begins UW then 2 numbers.

Perhaps she is the butler.

A call to the DVLA will actertain whether the number is in use (perhaps on a different car), whether it is on a sorned car (perhaps the car in question) or whether it has been removed from the register.

However if putting the number and the make in here......

www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/index.jsp

.......... does not bring anything up the car must have been scrapped or the number transferred from it many, many years ago. For instance if put a 1976 motorcycle I had in there it states the date of liability as being 1982.
