I am sad I know but have been investigating winter tires - have been considering getting a set of Michelin Alpin but they cost a fair bit and of course I would probably be better off getting them fitted on a spare set of wheels.
I have read the Michelin sales blurb and they claim that at 7 degrees C or less the performance is much improved on conventional summer tires ( I currently have Michelin Pilot Primacy on my Mondeo Estate) whilst lifetime cost is no more as you are wearing two sets of tires.
Any one had any experiance of switching tires for the winter ?
PS I live in West Yorkshire - we haven't had much snow in recent years but when we do its chaos !!
PPS Have also been reading about SnowSock - a textile sock you slip over the driven wheels when it snows -anybody have any of these ?
Thanks

RB, the clever so-and-so wouldn't be on the roads in the first place.
I guess the main thing here is if someone really feels they need winter tyres because they live or drive in the hills and/or mountains etc. then there is certain a place for them. Their overall performance can be compared to those of F1 tyres, great when the weather is within range of their spec, not so good otherwise.
As for which all weather tyre is the best, well each of us will choose a tyre based on the information we have available to us etc. I'd always go for wet braking/control as the first priority and sling anything with less than 4mm of tread.
There has been some recent publicity concerning the DVLA's supplying of vehicle keepers' addresses to various bodies, including debt collection agencies, car park operators and the like. Is it possible for a private individual to access this information? If so, how? Read more
You only have to tell them you think they ran into your car and drove off, pay the fee, and it's yours.
That's why I register my vehicles to a different address.
In a car park today, I saw a rather handsome Mercedes (silver of course) model **55 AMG (can't be sure what the prefix letters were - may be EL or CL? Anyway the number plate comprised the letter M followed by 17, then two R's and finally a letter C - you can see where this is going?
However the seven was a sort of anglisized (sp) version of the continental seven but was vertical rather than sloping and the horizonal strike-through was done just so it almost touched the adjacent 1. The net result from a moderate distance was such that it looked like MARRC - difficult to show on a keyboard but write them down in sequence and M17RRC becomes the above if you mangle a contintental 7 accordingly.........God, what a bore am I?
In an accident or fracas I wouldn't be sure, unless studied, what the Registration number was.

Reminds me of the tourist in the backwoods of Ireland who was astonished to see this gorgeous top-of-the range Ferrari in a small village. Right by it was a Garda who , when it was pointed out that the car didn't have any plates commented, 'So you think we don't know whose it is"!
How can i find a 1930 car that is not on the DVLA motor base if i have its registration number. It begins UW then 2 numbers.

Perhaps she is the butler.
A call to the DVLA will actertain whether the number is in use (perhaps on a different car), whether it is on a sorned car (perhaps the car in question) or whether it has been removed from the register.
However if putting the number and the make in here......
www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/index.jsp
.......... does not bring anything up the car must have been scrapped or the number transferred from it many, many years ago. For instance if put a 1976 motorcycle I had in there it states the date of liability as being 1982.
Anybody hired there recently ? Any recommendations or companies to avoid.
The internet choice is just massive so guidance from the backroom needed
I will probably be heading along into Spain as well so need some guidance on possible insurance problems if I cross the border in a Portugese car. Read more
I used Europcar a few months ago at Faro and the pickup of the car was also only yards away from the terminal. However when returning the car its on the approach road into the airport and they put you immediately onto a mini bus to the terminal. I think all of the car hire people were also on the same approach road for returns. They only take seconds to check the car over.
I found Europcar very professional. When picking up the car a man goes round the car with you showing any marks etc on the vehicle and showing you that these are marked down on a document they give you ensuring there can be no misunderstanding.
My OH saw a car advertised on the web via a prestigious dealership. The price seemed good,so he rang expressing interest re part ex with his own car.Later that day 4pm the Salesman rang back saying that he had made a mistake and underpriced the car,but that he would honour the deal and allow him to buy the car at that price. Also sent him an email stating the original advertised price.(we were a bit sus,but took it at face value). My OH rang them back the next day to proceed to be told,"oh no the deal was yesterday only".Now,he didnt mention this on the phone, neither did he state it in the email. Now i know no contract has been made here, but my OH still wants the car (now advertised at £3000 more). We have a copy of the original ad.

My ears are burning!
I'm not sure for definite but I think all Focuses have rev counters. All UK ones anyway.
If a model wasn't going to have one then my money would be on the CL but I'm almost sure these have them on too.

Remember reading about this one in EVO - that's right the 12.9 litre 1100bhp carbon bodied road legal uber dragster...
Now there's talk of a 16 litre 1600bhp model, heaven forbid!

I think it´s pretty much road legal, and the link was a good test of my German - interesting that the had to source a rear diff from a Nascar to cope with the power!
They mentioned 200kDM at the end, approx 80k sterling. Bargain I reckon.
Does anyone know how far in advance the reminder for renewal comes through the post?
The reason I ask is that mine runs out at the end of December, but I'm out of the country on holiday from mid Dec until after the new year. More likely than not, I will use the car to get to the airport (and obviously park up there), therefore I'll have a car on the road without a valid disc if the renewal doesn't get to me before I go away. I have a vague memory from last year that the reminder seemed to come through quite late (7 - 10 days before renewal). Am I right in thinking this?
Sorry if this is a bit confused, but I don't know of a way round this particular problem, if indeed there is one.
Thanks in advance

I've just renewed a bike at local PO and they won't renew before the 15th of the previous month (the renewal form says this).
