the extra heat from the bulbs will soon cause the paint to deteriate I'm afraid. A lot of the plating places won't do it becuase it is a used item and they say it will contaminate the plating baths. Some comapny will do them but they do them in batches just before new chemicals are due. Regards Peter

I had a super ten that had a remarkable habit of shedding wheels. The centre would remain bolted to the hub, but the rest would part company. After the second occurance, I examined the remaining three wheels, they were all cracked!
IIRC police 2.5 PIs had a similar problem at the same time.

With the joy of seeing Petrol go up another 2p a litre this week (That's £1.20 more it's gonna cost this week to get to work !) what would be an economical car to purchase ?

Budget - £2k to £3.5k depending on the car
Must have 4 doors, Aircon and a decent Boot

Thinking of a Focus (although the Wife's 1.8 isn't very economical) as it has the above, no need to be any bigger than this to be honest.

Donington may well have been more interesting. F1 put me to sleep: couldn't stay comatose any longer. Read more

what is it with people using this new word "carp".

New? People on this forum have been using it for ages as a substitute for the word crap. Thought someone like you with your photographic memory would have known that ?

Is it worth the expense to have a DAB Radio.

As some area's have poor reception, if you have poor Mobile phone reception.

Or would it be better to have a Std. FM/AM radio till the DAB coverage gets better, if ever. I say this as some countries are dropping the DAB coverage and will we be the next to drop it too ???. Read more

I have a walkman type DAB radio. The reception where I live is fantastic even indoors and also when out shopping, ie. inside large superstores, but where i work there is virtually no signal outdoors let alone indoors.I would definately not buy a DAB in car radio, even though I prefer their music stations.

I have just bought a 1995 1.5 diesel (63000 mile) peugeot 106, towards the end of a 100 mile journey it developed a "knocking" noise- present when idling and running. Is this terminal?

Thanks for your thoughts. Will report back.

PoloGirl

Picked up Gunther the new Golf on Thursday, and it's taken me two days to fall in love with it, which was different to the love at first sight that I had with Polo. Hated it at first because it's just so much bigger than Polo and it was taking me twice as long to do every little manouvre but I think I'm getting the hang of it now and the air con is brilliant! It is a really nice car to look at - I'm so glad I went for the Sport 3 dr instead of the stodgy five door SE.

I have some questions, and I have read the manual but it's not the most helpful of things (keeps telling me I can set things via the convenience menu which I don't have because I didn't spec the multi display computer sat nav doodah).

Rain sensing wipers - shouldn't they just work when it rains, even if the lever is in the off position? They don't seem to - do I have to switch them on at the first sign of rain and then leave them to sense how much wiping should be done?

Automatic lights - They come on fine when there's a patch of shade or I drive into a carpark, but they seem to take ages to go off again. Is that normal? Haven't driven him in the dark yet so this is the only experience of the lights I have so far.

Wing mirrors/reversing - apparently the mirrors are meant to tilt down when you put the car into reverse, to allow you to see the kerb. Only the left hand mirror seems to do this, and only if you set the mirror knob to L before engaging reverse. The right hand mirror wont do it at all, even if the knob is in R. Is that right? This is the one that's really confusing me at the moment!

Wing mirrors/adjustment - on Polo, the knob has L, O and R. If in L or R, you adjust the mirrors independently, but if in O you can adjust them both at the same time. The Golf doesn't seem to do this - is there no way of adjusting both mirrors at the same time?

I know the above are just gadgets but it would really help me to understand them! So far the actual driving of the car has been great, although we've only covered 70 miles together so far (and all of them below 2500rpm - doing as I'm told!)

Stereo - how do I mute it so that it goes to a low volume but doesn't switch off. Polo has this but the Golf only seems to have on and off.

Anyone else got a Golf or other newish VW and can help me out please?

(Polo, meanwhile, is in the garage waiting to be sold, because on the day I left him at home to pick up the new car, someone tried to steal his alloys and has messed up one of the wheels and stolen the middle of another...so I'm waiting to make him complete again before selling. Sods law, I believe it's called!)

Thanks! Read more

>>unless you move the mirror control in to the left position before engaging reverse>>

It must be quite a recent feature.

On impulse ordered a Suzuki 650 V-Strom Touring 2006 model with 1200 miles on the clock while the Bandit was having an MoT. Despite the heat in the showroom mamanged to persuade the salesman to manoeuvre it past several other bikes so it could escape onto the open road. Test rode it for 45 miles yesterday morning and loved the riding position, the engine, the noise, the ride quality, the screen, everything. It's even got a fuel gauge. Luxury. Despite the Bandit needing tyres, chain & sprockets and brakes, got a reasonable trade-in. Pick it up August 8th.

Chuffed to bits.

Texted no. 2 daughter this evening "I did buy a motor bike today. Mum v. cross" Says it all really. :-)

Thanks for your comments.
Mrs H is a better actress than I gave her credit for. Seems she's going to send the boys to her sister's and furthermore she's booked a couple of nights away at a B&B in Whitby where I am to buy her some jet, apparently. The B&B has secure parking for the BIKE says Mrs H. Outstanding!
