hi, the abs light comes on occasionally, not under any specific conditions, just when it feels like it, it may stay on for a couple of mins or an hour.
the local dealer put it on his diagnostic equipment and it's booked in.
he said he could be just a dirty sensor, dust etc.
i need the car not to show any lights for a drive tomorrow (i'm a driving instructor) is there anything i can do in the short term, either mechanically or is it possible to get behind the dash and pull the bulb?
the pads and disks were changed about 6 weeks ago but the problem has only just started.
any advice today would be greatly appreciated.
thanx Read more

buy a micra or a mini next time if ford cant fix it straight away and the dealer is aware its a dual control learner car and therefore your living maker.......
oh and what ever you do do NOT mess with the bulbs or ford will send you off with a huff and a puff

I payed out for paint protection on my new car. At the time the salesman told me it would prevent damage from bird muck, and that in the unusual circumstance where I did get paint damage then the company would pay out to have it rectified.

Now, only a few months later I have actually got paint damage from bird muck - left the car at at the airport and return it had bird muck on it. I washed it off, only to find the paint underneath has cracked.

I got in touch with the protection company, who today sent me a letter explaining that the only way I could get paint damage was if I didn't wash the muck off within 24 hours.....and their contract says they only pay out if you wash it off within 24 hours. Obviously, I'm paraphrasing, but that's pretty much what they said.

So, a few points come to mind here:
1. This 'guarantee' seems totally worthless. The chance of ever being able to claim on it seem approximately 0%. As this is the basis under which it is sold, it seems highly suspect and possibly fraudulant to me.
2. I never saw sight of any conditions, and nobody ever told me I had to wash bird muck off within 24 hours. Had I been told I would have been unlikely to have bought the protection. Basically this condition means you aren't covered if you go on holiday - what use is that?
3. As the only time I've ever had bird muck damage to my paint in the last 20 years of driving has been on the only car I've had with paint protection, I seriously doubt that this stuff does anything whatsoever to protect the paint!

I think the Small Claims Court is likely to sort this one out - there's no way they can wriggle out on the basis of a clause in a contract I never saw.....has anyone else had any experience of getting money out of these characters?

Yes - go to their website and there should be a number to locate your nearest distributor. They do trade and private business and if you pay in cash, its cheaper.

This is the contact page - I think you ring them and they will tell you your nearest distributor:
www.autosmart.co.uk/ContactInformation.htm

Its also worth looking at the product range so you can choose the best one for you.

Hello one and All,

Having heard how 'Petrol Fuel System Cleaner' Part number deleted cleans your fuel system, i decided to put half a bottle (as instructed) in a full tank of unleaded petrol. I drove the car and all was ok, then after about 40 miles it started to splutter and missfire a bit ... i put this down to lots of ... crud flowing through the pipes. I expect that after a while it would clear and i'd notice a slight increase in power.

Well, instead of what i expect the car then continued to splutter and misfire and then the Engine warning light started to flash. It continued to splutter and cough on acceleration and it now drives like a 50bhp car as apposed to it's original 160bhp (or there abouts).

Arghhhhhhhh .... the fuel cleaner has killed my car !!!!

What do i do ? Run out the petrol in the tank and fill up with clean fuel ? or do i replaced the fuel filter ? Replace the injectors ? Take it to Audi, tell them what i've done ... then sit there while they laugh ... "Not supposed to put that in this type of car mr!!"

Please help !!!

{Brand of fuel cleaner removed, as you're making an accusation that it has damaged your car - DD}

I would say as someone else has posted, that it is full or partial blockage of all or some of your injectors with dislodged crud. I'm not sure how/if you can clear the injectors. However I have seen this on a BMW 325 and it eventually cleared itself back to normal after a couple of weeks of intermirramt loss of power and spluttering etc.
If it was me, I would push on with a fresh tank of petrol and see how it goes for a while. If it doesn't improve then try the Audi dealers

Just encountered a very strange problem with the steering on my 1998 Xsara 1.9TD. When turning right, after about half a turn of the wheel it becomes difficult to turn. If you push through it things are fine. It doesn't really cause a problem when driving except on roundabouts where it can feel a bit like you've encountered a "stop" on the wheel before you turn a little harder.

Power steering fluid level is normal, there's no cack in the filter or reservoir, and no strange noises from the pump. Tyre pressures are normal. There is a bit of belt slip under full lock but that's happened ever since I had the belts changed. This has come on in the last few days.

Haven't hit any potholes or kerbed the wheels. Any advice appreciated! Read more

Well, that's what I thought but the garage told me that there was no play evident in the joint so it should be OK. I guess it's just a matter of keeping an eye on it. :)

Hi,

I am going to look at a Rover 825 Coupe with my father in law tonight.
I am not mechanically minded at all.
The car in question is a Rover 825 Coupe Sterling Auto
1997 P reg.
102000 miles
Full leathers, wood, air con etc (I think sterling is the top of range)

What are the pros and cons of this model in the rear world?
Any pointers I should look out for?
Having never driven an auto what should I look out for?

The asking price is £1500. The car has got MOT while november and is currently out of tax. It has a full rover history and is described as immaculate. Is the asking price reasonable?

Thanks In Advance

Are the wood trimmings inside the car real wood or just some fancy plastic?

They're plastic with inmould decoration, basically a transfer (like on your Airfix planes) which is put into the mould before injection.

*Handy trivia* The 800 Coupe had the longest door of any British production car at the time

Good luck with it, I've had dreadful experiences with R800s but if it's a good one then try and keep it that way

Bobby - do a Google for Comet Auctions. They often have graded washer dryers at much lower prices.

I bought a Servis washer dryer for one of our properties. It doesn't get used a great deal but it's not caused us any grief to date. IIRC it cost around half the normal comet price and just came with a minor dent that I could hardly see.

I try and buy all our white goods this way. Hence I worry slightly less about them lasting several years and treat them as fairly disposable. We just had our 3 year old Hoover die on us recently, but as I only paid £46 for it when I bought it new I wasn't going to cry about it. Its replacement from the same source cost me £136 plus delivery, as opposed to £229 plus delivery for the equivilent unmarked item.

Hi, I have recently purchased a Vauxhall Astra 1.7TDI (2003) with 70,000 miles on the clock. Every now & then the car seems to misfire/judder. It does not do it on every journey, I could drive 200 miles & it may only do it 3 or 4 times. On other occasions I have driven short journeys & it has juddered several times & then cured it's self again. On other occasions it has not done it once for 4 of 5 days. There does not seem to be any one thing that makes it do it allthough it possibly seems to be worse on & after motorway driving & also when the weather is hot. I have replaced the fuel filter & put injector cleaner through it but with no luck. Does anybody have any ideas as to what it may be & what I could do the cure it.

Many thanks

Russell.

Also get them to check the available vacuum level from the services half of the vac pump; should be a min of 21"Hg at idle. If these run low on oil, [and some of them drink it] that expensive vacuum pump gets trashed very quickly. The crank sensor, or the aforementioned relays, might be other "no codes" possibilities.

I m looking to buy a 7 seater, but at the min im like a kid in a sweetshop. I had my mind set on a mark 2 galaxy ghia(not seen a new model yet), but now im looking at the toyota verso diesel 180 bhp.Seems better value with all the toys, but im not happy with the oap image (no offense) i also kind of like the mazda 5, but to many poor reports, i like the s max but my partner says its to much of a mans car, so come guys and gals. If you need a 7 seater and also want a boot, may I suggest the Ssangyong Rodius. We got ours in December last year and we love it. It swallows all 6 of us (two aduts and 4 kids aged 11, 8, 6 and 2) and all the associated stuff they carry. It is coping very well with the abuse it gets, goes and stops well and, for a two ton automatic, is returning around 30 mpg. Brand new for 14995, they are a little to new (the oldest will only be a year old) to find second hand but we are very happy with ours. I admit the looks take a little getting used to.............

Hi,

I am a new member to this forum but have been following it for a while.
I must commend you all on the mass of motoring knowledge you have.

I have an LPG converted car. The car is a 1984 B reg Audi Coupe 2.o Injection 5 Cylinder. When I bought the car it was already intalled with the LPG kit.
The problem is I only get around 140 miles (local miles) to 60 litres of gas. According to my calculations thats about 10mpg on LPG.
I assumed I would be getting about 250-300 miles at least on a tank of LPG.
Could any of you advise me as to what problems there could be?

Many Thanks

There should be no smell except when you are filling up. I use LPG cars from our work fleet often and there is no smell. Try posting on this site:

These guys should be well up on the whole thing.
