July 2006
Walked past the wife?s car and stopped?shock horror the road tax disc read 31.5.06.
Having never missed renewing in almost 50 years how could it happen.
Well I have a system of when receiving the renewal reminder of placing it in a prominent position ( top of my monitor) and get new tax disc at our post office on or about the required 14 days before its due. The new disk then sits in the same place until the 1st of the month.
So what had happened?..Checked my bank account to see if I had paid and couldn?t find anything. Checked the wife?s with no joy. Searched vainly for a new tax disc and finally came to the conclusion that I had simply hadn?t received a reminder.
Went to the DVLA site and was told how to pay at the Post Office without a V11 (licence renewal reminder) It told me that I have to fill a form V10 (Application for a Vehicle Licence) and submit it with the usual registration document, insurance, MOT.
Outside the Post Office at 9.0am the next morning first customer and began explaining to the girl. She cut me short and said ?have you the registration doc? No problem? and simply made out a disc from the 1st of July.
?And what about June? No she couldn?t backdate and said expect an £80.00 fine in the post. ?Why no reminder in the post? I bleated.
Happens all the time, sometimes they send them and others not. You can renew with registration doc so there isn?t any real need.
There is with a memory like mine I thought but anyway if any among you use the same tactics of relying on a V11 in the post find a new system??

Has anyone got any ideas about old cars? I'm looking for something in the £600-£800 bracket. Not particularly interested in cars and don't believe in spending a lot of money on them. They seem to break down anyway however posh they are.
I drive an Astra, N reg, at the moment, never really liked it and I've just spent £425 getting the wretched thing through its MOT. On the plus side it does really good mileage but I do need something bigger for work and it would be nice to drive something less rattly.
I seem to remember Jeremy Clarkson saying if you are going to buy an old car, get a Passat because they last forever. (I've certainly found this to be the case with Polos in the past), but there don't seem to be many of them around and they mostly seem to be saloons.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers

I was actually just thinking that contrary to most ten to fifteen year old Fords, I have yet to see one with any significant rust on it at all.

As a lad I lived opposite Holy Island in Northumberland. You can only reach there via a causeway which is covered by the tide twice daily.
Despite numerous large warning signs and tide tables , it was then (and probably still is) a regular occurrence for cars to be trapped by the tide and the occupants spend an uncomfortable few hours in the refuge box on stilts watching their pride and joy filling with sea water.
was thinking about buying a car from salvage as a repair job but dont quite understand all the CAT C,D, etc etc damage.
i have seen some on ebay and at my local breakers. the ebay ones usually say whats wrong (bumper/wing damage etc etc) and usually say if it still drives. i have noticed on ebay that they hardly ever have log books and i have to take for some test to retrieve this from dvla.
can anyone help me out and give me some pointers of what to do and what i should know Read more
This is a big fish game and minnows get eaten but fleeced first.
What do people think of this car? I like the lines, but it's an old model with what HJ calls a high death rate (worrying). I imagine, being a Mazda it's reliable and though I couldn't afford to run the the V6, I've been offered a 1.8 Executive with 79,000 miles for £1500. What can expect of this car in relation to my 1.6 Focus LX? Read more

Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a 1.3 96/97 Hyndai Accent as a second car which would mainly be used at my part-time job (take-away deliveries). I would like to know how reliable they are and if they're cheap to run (MPG, insurance etc..). Are there any common faults which I should be aware of and if there's any more info you would like to add please do so. Thanks! Read more
If you can get one for nothing don't turn it down, but there are much better cars around. I had a brand new one 5 years ago as a courtesy car - 1.3 Auto. It was positively dangerous - no power to do anything. The interior trim, switchgear etc reminded me of the early 80s Datsun Sunny I learnt to drive in.
recently bought a honda accord type s on a 52 plate (new shape) at auction, it had the malfunction light indicator on. after honda diagnosed the front lambda sensor and quoted me £350 to replace plus the £62.50 paid for the diagnoses, i got it replaced by my local guy.
the light was still on. i got in contact with a chap with all the computer wizardry he said the fault was the lambda sensor was not getting any power. both he and i are searching for how to power the lambda sensor on said vehicle or a wiring diagram.
can you please help as it is approaching hair pulling out stage

You can try this place - the Honda Accord Owners Club message board. It's through this that I got an MP3 adapter for my Type-S.

Hiya
I've a 406 HDI 2.2 136BHP Estate. I used to have a 110 same model.
It's been recently serviced, does loads of Motorway miles etc, about 40k on the clock, gets bounced off the limiter every fortnight or so, had the millers stuff through it.
But it really doesn't feel like it has an extra 26 horses. And the power delivery comes in a bit too far up the rev range as well, unlike the 110 which pulled from tickover.
So what I'd like is a recc to a top outfit who would be able to check things like the turbo boost is up to spec, or otherwise sort it out. I'm near Camberley in Hampshire, but would travel to anywhere/one really good. Please help-it's a super car otherwise.

Van Aaken & The Derv Doctor are both worth asking first, Either might be able to work some magic on it.
They also might have one already tuned you could have a spin in first.
Morning All
I will shortly be selling 2 cars that are currently uninsured. The girlyfiend has insurance on our main car. I don't on anything in my name-which also includes the bike. Let it lapse a couple of months ago-long story.
Now I once I've sold the 2 cars I will be buying a small cheap diesel Hatch/Estate & obviously will need to insure this.
So how do I do all this as economically as possible? Is there a particular insurance company/policy which will do the trick? I'm thinking insure one car, sell it, rotate policy onto the other car, sell it, buy the cheapy, rotate policy onto that.
Sound good?
I'm sure this issue comes up time & time again, so apologies for it.

Just heard on the local BBC Londo news that Ken Livingstone is thinking of introducing higher congestion charges on those vehicles that produce high levels of Carbon Dioxide. This would presumably include the 'Chelsea Tractors' and their ilk.
He is talking about a possible hike in the charge to something in the region of £25/day for such transgressors and £8 for the rest of us who don't pollute so much.

The only good thing ever said about Luton.
Its not as bad as Dunstable...

Having previously seen your land bruiser, I can believe that. Using the button, wet stuff and a couple of black wipey things doesn't get rid of the dead fly brains though.
